The Relation of Life Expectancy to the Population and Carbon Dioxide Emission of the

Philippines

Over the course of the years- from 19 century and up to now, the life expectancy of the the people in
the Philippines has become better. Back from the year 1960, people are expected to live up to 58 years old,
yet currently, it is around 68 according to the data gathered by the World Bank Group.

In this paper, I will try to explain why life expectancy is factor of why carbon dioxide emission of
Philippines has increased through the course of the years.

Life expectancy Is the predicted average age at which people are eventually going to die. Because of
the increasing life expectancy, people live longer than before. With this scenario, population also increases.
In the 1960s the population of the Philippines is measured at about 26 million and on 2016 the population
rose to 103 million people. Because less people die due to technological and medical advancements the
population not only in the Philippines but throughout the world increased rapidly.

What it relates to the increase carbon dioxide emission? you may ask. Well, in the increased
population there is also the increase in consumption. Not only the humans produce through breathing, but
also through consumption of natural resources and the byproduct wastes that we produce. A great
example of an industry that consumes a lot of natural resources and produce a lot of carbon dioxide is the
power industry. Up until today, a lot of the sources from which we get our electrical power are from
non-renewable resources.

Increase in carbon dioxide (metric tons per capita) as presented in the website of World Bank Group
has gone from 0.3 to 1 for the Philippines. It lowered in 1985 for some reason which I cannot really point
out, but the data still shows that the Philippines has increased its production of carbon dioxide.

The increase of carbon dioxide production has several negative effects. The 1 st and major effect is that
the world heats up more rapidly. Scientifically, the Earth is expected to heat up eventually. But increase in
carbon dioxide levels will hasten the heating process of the earth. The carbon dioxide is a known heat
trapper. This contributes to global warming and climate change. Carbon monoxide-as said in a page of
World Bank Group- is the reference gas against which other greenhouse gases are measured, thus having a
Global Warming Potential of 1. It is also a major source of ocean acidification since it dissolves in water to
form carbonic acid. The change in the acidity of the ocean will lead to tragic extinction of a lot species of
fishes. This will lead to a big negative effect to the whole biosphere and there may be a time that survival
will be difficult to many more species including the human race.
