My assignment

Membrane is porous thin film which widely use to water treatment. Undesirable material in water will
stuck in membrane that have bigger size than water. Technology membrane is still very expensive. So,
We try to find the alternative method for production membrane. In the case, We can successfully found
new polymer material from PET bottle. It is cheaper than Polymer Polyethersulfone that usually use for
membrane material and it easily find as waste. Membrane that are made from material PET is PET
Membrane. There are three basic raw material for making membrane. They are solvent, polymer, and
non-solvent. In this project, We use phenol as solvent, PET bottle as polymer, and water as non-solvent.
First , the casting solution were prepared by dissolving a specific amount of PET bottle in phenol, and the
mixtures were stirred for 2 hour at 95 degree Celsius. The solution was cast on a glass plate using a
applicator (the device can control a thickness film) with the wet membrane thickness gap set at 15
micron. Immediately after casting, the glass plate with the cast film was dipped into the water batch.
The phase-inversion process started, and after a few minute, a thin polymeric film on glass separated
from glass and it is called a membrane. The membrane was washed with distilled water and kept in a
water bath prior to evaluation. The best casting membrane was used for desalination sea water. A
membrane sample was placed in the test cell with the active skin layer facing the incoming feed. The
result of permeation water from membrane filtration process is analyzed.
