Nearly a decade ago, Barnes
formally announced her retire-
ment from the Team USA pro-
gram after 12 appearances on
the team, allowing her to focus
her attention on her family,
which includes husband, Chris,
a Professional Bowlers
Association star, and twin sons,
Ryan and Troy.
Though she still bowled regu-
larly, the return of the
Professional Women's Bowling
Association Tour in 2015 really
gave her an extra push to get
sharp. Once again representing
her country on the lanes has
been a priceless opportunity.
"The last eight or nine years
have been about raising a fami-
ly and bowling when I could to
stay sharp, but when the Tour
came back, I wanted to be out
there to support it," Barnes said.
"I have not bowled very well on
the Tour, but I've learned a lot
by watching the young players
and trying to get smarter. I think
it panned out well here, again,
with the help of supportive
teammates."

Bohn's 2-1 victory against
Canada's Joe Ciach was a little
more dramatic and ended with
the experienced left-hander
striking on his final fill ball to
shut out Ciach and lock up the
gold medal, the third of his
international debut with Team
USA on his back, in a 238-237
finale.
Ciach had the early momen-
tum after a lopsided 256-170
win to start the match, but Bohn
rebounded with a 197-188 win.
Bohn was clean in the effort,
while back-to-back open frames
from Ciach in the sixth and sev-
enth frames were the difference.
Bohn earned his spot in the
final with a 2-0 (227-172, 230-
159) win over Australia's Shaun
Cummings, and Ciach advanced
with a 2-0 (213-180, 215-192)
performance against Sweden's
Stefan Yngstrom.
The dominance for the United
States Germany included sin-
gles wins for Barnes and Ron
Mohr of North Las Vegas,
Nevada, a doubles win for Bohn
and Bob Learn Jr. of Erie,
Pennsylvania, a successful title
defense of the men's and
women's team titles and all-
events victories for Hulsenberg
and Mohr.
The contingent also included
Lennie Boresch Jr. of Kenosha,
Wisconsin, and Tish Johnson of
Colorado Springs, Colorado,
while USBC Hall of Famer and
USBC Gold coach Bill Spigner
served as the Team USA coach
for the event.
In all, the United States won
18 medals - nine gold, four sil-

The last time O'Keefe bowled for a major title was the 2015 U.S. Women's
Open, where she left, and missed, a final-frame washout, allowing United
States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Liz Johnson of Deerfield, Illinois,
to claim the second of her four consecutive U.S. Women's Open titles.
This win also nearly got away from O'Keefe, who left a 4-6-7-10 split in
the 10th frame of her semifinal match with Johnson. O'Keefe entered the
final frame on a string of five consecutive strikes, and the miscue allowed
Johnson to throw a strike and then spare a 7 pin for a 222 tie.
It took three one-ball roll-offs for O'Keefe to lock up her spot in the cham-
pionship match. Both players struck on their first two opportunities, and
O'Keefe won the third, 10-9.
"The split in the 10th was a really bad shot, and I knew it wasn't going to
hold because I whipped my hand around it," O'Keefe said. "I immediately
thought back to last time, but ultimately, I knew I threw nine great shots, and
I was happy. It wasn't the best result in a pressure moment, but it is what it
is. Then, she gave me an opportunity, and from that moment on, it was go. I
am grateful I had that second chance."
As the points leader each season since the PWBA Tour returned in 2015,
Johnson has been seeded into the televised portion of the event. The three-
time reigning PWBA Player of the Year has not been able to advance to the
title match.
On her way to the final, Kulick built an early lead against Shannon
Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, and led by nearly 40 pins at the halfway point.
Two opens from Pluhowsky in the first six frames proved to be her undoing,
and Kulick tossed nine strikes on the way to a 247-191 win.
Kulick, a six-time major champion, also was the runner-up at the 2017 Go
Bowling PWBA Players Championship, losing to Johnson in the final.
"I did my job and threw really good shots, and the ball reaction just went
away a little bit," said Kulick, whose last major title was the U.S. Women's
Open in 2012. "Swishy 7, ring 10, it could've gone either way. Shannon had
a good look all week long and bowled great. I have no regrets, but I'm real-
ly tired of finishing second. Overall, I had a great season. Even though Liz
ran away with it, I finished second for player of the year. I'm making cuts,
I'm cashing and I'm making TV. That's all I can do, and next year, some-
thing's going to give."

PWBA members qualified for the Tour Championship either by winning a
title during the 2017 season or earning enough competition points. All eligi-
ble 2017 PWBA Tour champions received automatic invitations to the Tour
Championship, and the remainder of the 16-player field was filled through
the PWBA points list.
O'Keefe earned her spot at the season-ending event with her recent win at
the PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open, Kulick secured her place with a
win at the PWBA Fountain Valley Open and Johnson, the season's only
three-time winner, advanced with a win at the PWBA Storm Sacramento
Open.
Pluhowsky, whose best finish this season was a runner-up effort at the
Nationwide PWBA Rochester Open, was the lone left-hander to qualify for
the Tour Championship and did so via the points list.
Johnson also won two of the season's three majors, the Go Bowling PWBA
Players Championship and the U.S. Women's Open, while finishing second
at the other, the USBC Queens. Her consistency locked up her third consec-
utive player-of-the-year award before a single ball was thrown at this week's
Tour Championship.
As the top two players on the season points list, Johnson and Kulick earned
automatic berths in the semifinals, while O'Keefe and Pluhowsky battled
their way through the 16-player single-elimination bracket, featuring best-
of-five matches.

Journey to PBA50 Player of the Year Became a Nail-Biter for Brian LeClair
New York native finally realizes potential as PBA50 Tour resurrects 52-year-olds professional career

the quest to winning 2017 PBA50
Player of the Year honors turned
from a relatively sure thing into
one of those I cant bear to
watch moments that character-
ized his earlier PBA Tour career.
LeClair, the 2017 seasons only
two-time winner, held off chal-
lenges by two of the PBAs all-
time greats Norm Duke and
Parker Bohn III who took the
PBA50 Player of the Year race
into the stepladder finals of the
DeHayes Insurance Group
Championship presented by Pro
Bowl West and Ebonite in Fort
Wayne, Ind., the final PBA50 Tour
event of the season.
I honestly thought they were
going to do it, LeClair said, refer-
ring to Duke and Bohns late-sea-
son challenge for the crown. I
thought the handwriting was on
the wall for another disappoint-
ment in my career. I didnt even
stay for the finals to find out what
happened.
LeClair, from Delmar, N.Y.,
spent nearly two decades compet-
ing regularly on the PBA Tour
without a win but his lengthy
career was finally rewarded when
he won PBA50 Player of the Year
honors on the strength of his wins
in the Pasco County Florida Open
and Johnny Petraglia BVL Open
presented by Brunswick, and a
runner-up finish in the Suncoast
PBA Senior U.S. Open presented
by Storm.
The best thing about it is I
finally have my name on some-
thing, LeClair said. Im just as
happy for my friends and family
who supported me because I think
they wanted it as bad as I did.
Heading into the DeHayes
Insurance Group Championship,
LeClair held a substantial lead in
player of the year points but
because of the PBA50s point
structure which awards points for
both qualifying and final finishing
position, Bohn and Duke still had
a chance to catch LeClair. It was a
tall order for the pair of hall of
famers because one-or-the-other
needed to win and qualify either
first or second. If Bohn had won,
LeClair would have to finish sec-
ond to clinch the crown. If Duke
had won, LeClair would have had
to finish third.

ment and 19th in qualifying. But
in the end, Bohn finished fourth,
losing to Duke in the second
stepladder match, 224-217, and
Dukes chances were then dashed
when he lost to fellow hall of
famer Pete Weber in the title
match, 279-255.
I was concerned heading into
Fort Wayne because I was going to
have to make the show at a center
I really didnt have a good handle
on if I wanted to clinch it,
LeClair said. Every time I
bowled (in Fort Wayne) it seemed
like I would come out of the gate
just killing it in every round but
then Id lose it in the middle of the
round. I could never figure it out.
Competing on the PBA50 Tour
has resulted in a resurgence of
LeClairs career. A big weight was
lifted off his shoulders in his rook-
ie season in 2015 when he won his
first PBA national title in the
PBA50 Fountain Valley Open. He
winning USBCs Super Senior
2016, without a title, but he was
back in the winners circle right
away in 2017.
What makes winning (PBA50)
player of the year so rewarding
was doing it an era when so many
of bowlings all-time greats are
competing, said LeClair, who
now owns three PBA50 Tour
titles. Just look at the finals in
Fort Wayne as an example Pete,
Norm, Parker, Walter Ray
(Williams Jr.) and Amleto
(Monacelli) and then all the
other great bowlers who bowl
week-in and week-out. I think
thats what means the most to me.
Five-time PBA Tour winner
Michael Haugen Jr. of Phoenix
earned PBA50 Rookie of the Year
honors. Haugen won the Senior
U.S. Open defeating LeClair, 173-
158, in the title match. He had
three other top-five finishes
including a third in the PBA50
Players Championship.
Ron Mohr of Las Vegas success-
fully defended his PBA60 Player
of the Year crown, winning the
PBA50 South Shore Open for his
first win against the 50-and-older
generation in five years as well as
Classic for 60-and-older players.
He had three other PBA50 top-
five finishes during the season and
a second in the PBA60 Killer B
Open.
Finishing in the top eight in
PBA50 competition points were
LeClair, Duke, Bohn, Bob Learn
Jr., Williams, Haugen, Monacelli
and Mohr who earned the opportu-
nity to compete in the PBA50
Challenge which will be held in
conjunction with GEICO PBA
World Series of Bowling IX pre-
sented by Eldorado Reno
Properties this November in Reno,
Nev. All eight also earned paid
entries into WSOB IX.
PBA50 players will vote on the
Dick Weber Sportsmanship award
at a later date.

performance at Bol Obispado. Schwartz was
the only player in either U21 division to medal
in every event.
Previous opportunities to represent the United
States at the 2014 and 2016 World Bowling
Youth Championships and 2015 PABCON
Youth Championships saw the four-time Junior
Team USA member take home a total of five
medals, but she was unable to strike gold along
the way.
In her final Junior Team USA event, Schwartz
put that previous experience to use and was able
to break through.
In addition to Schwartzs collection of
medals, the girls team also captured four silver
medals (singles Brummett; doubles
Brummett and Bond; all-events Clemmer;
Masters Brummett) and one additional bronze
