About the artist:
Since 1980, Robert Maniscalco’s exquisite commissioned
portraits and fine art have become part of over 850
distinguished private and public collections throughout North
America. “Preparing for Market” (featured on cover) is part of
a series of paintings called, “Faces of the Lowcountry.” Born
in Detroit in 1959, he is the son of internationally renowned

during the early 1980’s. He moved to New York City in 1986

NYC he also worked as an actor and director on numerous

RESIDENCY AND FEES
Charleston County residents pay discounted fees due to contributions to
the local tax base. Fees are per person unless otherwise noted.
CCR = Charleston County Resident
REFUND POLICY
· All withdrawals must be received during normal registration hours.
· 100% refund for withdrawals received four or more business days
prior to program start date.
· 50% refund for withdrawals received less than four business days
prior to program start date.
· No refund if participant fails to attend program.
· Some programs have additional refund restrictions;
please ask for details.

WEATHER
Many CCPRC activities are held in outdoor settings. In general,
these activities are held rain or shine. Please plan accordingly

All recreational activities, including those offered by CCPRC, have
inherent risks which include personal injury and property loss. Prior
understanding and acceptance of these risks (parents/guardians must sign
for youth 17 and under) and waiving your rights for claims of negligence.

Folly Beach Bird Walks
Birding experts help participants explore the
surprisingly diverse opposite ends of Folly Beach. The
program is free, however pre-registration is required.
Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve Bird Walk
This walk focuses on the northern shoreline of Folly Beach. We
hope to see migrating warblers, thrushes, and large flocks of
migrating seabirds and shorebirds!

Birding Trips
Bird watching, or birding, is a hobby most anyone
can enjoy and Carolina is a premier destination for
bird enthusiasts. We’ll look and listen for birds just
passing through and those that make South Carolina
home.
Sod Farm Shorebirds
View Pectoral, Buff-breasted, and Upland Sandpipers, along
with Horned Larks, hawks, and other potential feathered
visitors. Perry Nugent will be along to help identify these
spectacular birds.

Naturalist
CCPRC and Clemson University are offering the Certified
Master Naturalist program for people interested in
understanding and protecting the state’s valuable natural
resources. Master Naturalist (MN) candidates complete a
13-day field study course led by a variety of experts in some
of the state’s most beautiful natural areas as they learn and
practice the skills naturalists use to “read” the natural world.
The MN program develops volunteer citizen scientists,
conservationists, and educators who can positively impact the
natural resources of the state.

Are you and your child fascinated by the natural
world? If so, join a Junior Naturalist class. Programs
introduce participants to ecosystems found on the
coast through activities such as seining, dip-netting,
and lab observation. These programs are for
children ages 8-12 and their parents. A registered and

and under.
Exploring Barrier Islands
Amazing things are found where land meets the sea. Our
search for natural treasures includes pulling a seine net,
digging for animals in the sand, and exploring the maritime
forest. Prepare to get wet, sandy, and have a great time!

Wetland Discovery

backyard waterways.
Charleston Harbor Kayak Tour
Departing Remley’s Point, we’ll paddle under the Ravenel
Bridge, past the Yorktown to Shem Creek Boat Landing. Along
the way, we’ll see the historic harbor from a dolphin’s point of
view and drop you off in time for some post trip entertainment
along Shem Creek!

Sandy Point Kayak to Kiawah Island
Departing Folly River boat landing, we’ll kayak along the

Kayak Rolling and Rescues
Anyone can learn to roll a kayak, and the skills
used in rolling are the same skills that help you

Learn the basic techniques for paddling in areas subject to tidal
current, including entering and exiting eddies, ferrying across

kayakers can rest alongside the fast-moving tide rip. This is your
chance to push the envelope with dependable backup. There
is always the possibility of capsizing when practicing in rougher

ACA Coastal Kayak Level 3 Instructor

Certification Courses
Are you interested in teaching others how to
kayak? Do you wish to lead trips for area clubs,
local outfitters, scouts, or church groups? If so, ACA
Instructor Certification might be your next step.
Founded in 1880, the American Canoe Association is
recognized for its high standards of instruction. The
instructor certification process polishes the paddling
and teaching skills of already competent paddlers
aspiring to become instructors. Certification is based
upon successful demonstration of competency and

Development Workshop (IDW)
This IDW will allow aspiring instructors to experience the
ACA curriculum and work on their own teaching techniques.
Combined with additional personal experience and expertise

Team Charleston 2010 Training

Team Charleston is for youth who wish to take their climbing
to the next level. We will spend 4 hours a week training
and honing your skills to help make you a better, stronger
climber. This physically and mentally intense program requires
a 9 month commitment that follows the school year. Fall

competitive season through USA Climbing, with compositions

Challenge Course
Our course is located in a wooded area of James Island County
Park. It is a very effective tool for addressing group issues such
as trust, effective communication, teamwork, and problem
solving.

The Climbing Wall

Located within James Island County Park, this 50ft. high
structure features 4,500 square feet of climbing wall space, and
accommodates 12-14 climbers at one time. With over 300 holds
and 1,000 square feet of climbing surface, the Bouldering Cave
adds another dimension to the wall. The Climbing Wall affords

Volunteer Opportunities
The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission offers
exciting volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are an integral part
of our county park system. Each year hundreds of people of
all ages volunteer their time and talents to help us become a
successful organization.
Climb the highest peak along the East Coast, trek through
meadows of wildflowers for a butterfly count, or disguise yourself
by serving as a park mascot. These are just a few of the fun
programs where volunteers (ages 13 & up) are needed. Contact
the Volunteer Coordinator at (843) 762-2172.
Climbing Wall Passes – Valid for climbing on the Climbing Wall
at James Island County Park. The Wall offers an Annual Pass,
a 3-month Pass, and a 10-Climb Pass, and a Youth Pass.
Individual Passes – This picture ID pass is valid for walking, biking,
and driving (not valid for other passengers in the vehicle) into James
Island County Park, Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park,
North Charleston Wannamaker County Park, and Ravenel Caw Caw
Interpretive Center (biking and dogs are not allowed at Caw Caw).
Equestrian Pass – Family Membership Pass and Individual
Membership available. Members must have their own horses.
