Field dates: September 11 to 15, 2017

Panel source: Voice of Alberta & Angus Reid Forum

n=1145

Weighted to reflect gender, age and region of Calgary population according to Stats Canada

This online survey utilizes a representative but non-random sample, therefore margin of
error is not applicable. However, a probability sample of this size would yield a margin of
error of +/- 2.9 percentage points at a 95% confidence interval

Accuracy of sub-samples of the data decline based on sample sizes

HIGHLIGHTS AND IMPLICATIONS
-THE ARENA

Since June and the recent September Surprise by the Flames, the publics views on a new arena have
shifted notably in some respects, however there is still considerable public resistance to significant tax
dollars being invested.
Fully 63% of Calgary voters say they support the idea of building a new NHL arena in Calgary (up
4-points from June)
HOWEVER, there is not a lot of movement in terms of public acceptance of different types of support The
City could offer to a new facility:
Land, a loan (with interest), revenue sharing or really anything that doesnt impact taxes are options
which large majorities of Calgarians support
The public are somewhat more supportive of some sort of financial recognition of the contribution the
Flames make to Calgary than they have been in the past, however, this is still a very divisive notion
Any funding arrangement which can be linked to tax increases will still have a high degree of public
push-back
