PREAMBLE
Water is life. The looming water crisis facing the country is not primarily due to a
lack of water, but rather arises from mismanagement of water resources. The worlds water is
increasingly becoming degraded in quality, threatening the health of people and ecosystems
and increasing the cost of treatment. Some 780 million people around the globe still lack
access to clean water and thousands perish daily for lack of it. Unsanitary conditions exist due
to lack of sufficient water supply and groundwater & surface water contamination due to
dumping of municipal solid waste in the cities at inappropriate places. Thus, the wastewater
generated and contaminated drinking water is exerting a crippling toll on both health of
human population and on the environment. Many endemic & water-borne diseases are
frequent due to inefficient water supply facilities & wastewater discharges in water resources
such as Cholera, Hepatitis, Typhoid and Diarrhea.
The centralized management paradigm has kept the citizens out and taken away
their sense of responsibility towards managing their water. Most cities in India are water
stressed, with no city having 24/7 water supply. The water problems stem from our failure to
meet basic human needs, ineffective or inappropriate institutions & management, and
inadequacy in operation & maintenance of distribution system. These maladies are rooted in
a wasteful use of water, characterized by poor management systems, improper economic
incentives, underinvestment, failure to apply existing technologies, lack of skilled professionals
and an obsolete mindset focused almost exclusively on developing new supplies.
Accessing the Sustainability features in water management, the three-fold goals of
economic feasibility, social responsibility and environmental integrity, is linked to the purpose
of water distribution, wastewater treatment & its reuse and recycling. Sustainable water
supply is a component of integrated water supply management, the practice of bringing
together multiple stakeholders with various viewpoints in order to determine how water
distribution should best be managed & sustained with respect to urban & rural areas.
The most important change we can make is in the way
we think about, value, and manage our water. Reform
is needed for the reduction of non-revenue water &
groundwater exploitation. We must consider
wastewater as a resource, and looks at the water cycle
in a holistic way
Sustainable water supplies are essential to the growth of
regional or local economic hubs. They are part and parcel of good
local governance. Public private partnerships (PPP) are a key part of
national water supply strategies. The scope remains global and
macroscopic, though there may be regional differences depending
on the water sources available in a particular setting. What is
considered sustainable in one location may be a challenge
to sustainability elsewhere.

consultants and Sr. Engineers from reputed institutions like IITs,
NITs, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and PHEDs. The
working professionals and students may also be invited for the
expert lectures, paper presentations and experience sharing.

Nigam, Lucknow and Indian Water Works Association (Lucknow Centre) to create awareness among participants, stakeholders, technocrats & policy
planners about the Sustainable Water Management in India and its associated strategies & issues.,
