Topic: Culture through the lens

My capstone project is going to be on photography and editing. My final product will be a

book with the photos I have taken. The theme I have for this is on my cultures attire
(Punjabi). What I will be doing is getting different people to volunteer to be in my book and
setting dates for the pictures to be taken. I currently have 7 volunteers and need about 3
more. The book will contain pictures of girls and boys, whoever is the same age will be
posing in some pictures together. I plan on having majority of the pictures taken in fields of
grass or fields of flowers and have an overall nature background. The girls will each have a
certain outfit assigned to them depending on what location they will be taking their pictures
at. This work to me is important because I really enjoy photography and would like to
educate myself on how to edit photos and on getting high quality pictures. My research will
include some of my favourite photographers and a little bit of knowledge on their techniques
and tips. Also on photo shopping and how to edit pictures. I plan on having all my photos
taken by the end of November and expect editing to take 2-3 weeks. After that is complete I
will have the book developed which will take about a week. I expect the book to be complete
by January 6 -10th. I also plan on adding descriptions on some photos describing what people
are wearing and what events they would wear that type of attire to. I will also be giving a
little description on some props that will be used. The outcome of this project will be a book
filled with pictures taken and edited by me. By the end of this project I will have learned how
to edit my picture and pass the knowledge onto someone else who may be interested by my
project. My capstone will also educate people a bit more on Punjabi attire. When I present
my whole project I will have either a poster board or prezi on my information and the book.
1. Reason for choosing this career or area of interest (briefly explain why you
chose this career/interest and what you hope to learn from completing this
project).

I choose this area of interest because I really enjoy photography and is something Ive been
interested in for two years now. I think this would be a great capstone project for me because this
is something I enjoy doing and will gain more information on. What I hope to learn from
completing this project is how to edit photos, videos and add filters. Also, see the different angles
that make for the best shot and know the right shutter speed to use, depending on the weather. I
would like to learn what I would have to avoid like shaking the camera and how to improve on
that. I also hope to learn how to get good light exposure and sharp images.

2. What prior knowledge (if any) do you already have which relates to this
project? (Explain how this project will help you gain new knowledge or
information).

I own a camera and have taken pictures here and there but have never attempted to edit any.
This project will help me teach myself how to edit pictures and place filters over. I would also
get information on the best shutter speed and aperture for the right shot depending on the
circumstances. For example, a moving subject. This project will also help me gain knowledge of
what types of lenses I should use and what works better than the other. I will also gather
information on how to take pictures of a moving subject or object. I will learn step by step on
how my camera should be placed and if I should fire the flash. I will also gain knowledge on how
to put together a photography book as my final product.

3. How will completing this project help make a connection between your
academic and career goals?

Completing this project will help make a connection between my academic and career goals
because Im interested in photography. Academic wise, I think this is a good capstone project
because its something I would like to learn more about. Im not sure what I would like to do as a
future career but photography could possibly be what I would like to do. Doing this project can
help me determine if I would like to do this as a career. If not, it would still be something I would
like to do on the side.
 4. List any other related information that you feel should be included in the
Proposal.

I would also like to say that I have a theme for this book that is based on my culture and its
attire. This will include boys and girls dressed up in normal Punjabi attire and attire worn to
special occasions. There will also be some props (not many) that they will be posing with. Most
of the photo will be taken in fields. It will have an overall nature background.
