Technical training INTRODUCTION

1- INTRODUCTION
Up until now, evaluation of the degree of drying was accomplished by measuring the temperature or
resistivity of the linen. These two means were not unaffected by the ambient temperature or even the
washing products used. The results of the drying process could consequently be not as desired.

A new sensor provides the means of achieving perfect drying of the clothes, regardless of quantity,
nature of the textile, spin speed, or ambient temperature.

What is necessary now is to measure the true degree of moisture in the clothes being dried.

The precise measurement of moisture makes it possible to completely control the temperature at the
core of the load of linen throughout the cycle and therefore avoid any risk of overdrying.

New drum rotation timing improves the exchange between the air and the linen, increases the
uniformity of the drying action, and eliminates interlacing of the various items of clothing.

Main advantages of the new sensor :

Continuous monitoring of the temperature of the linen throughout the cycle.

A single "All Textile" drying cycle.

No risk of overdrying the clothes.

No additional drying needed.

Easy to use.

Repeated results cycle after cycle.

This new component, called HYGROCAPT, is as of now fitted in all top-loaded electronic tumbles
dryers from the Brandt group.

It is the first and sole technological innovation in tumbles dryers in more than 25 years.

2- ENERGY LABEL

2.1. - What you need to know

Washing machines, tumbles dryers dryers, and dish
washers are three appliances which can to weigh
heavily, in particular on, the electricity bill if a model
is chosen that is in a poor position in terms of
energy consumption.

It should be noted that a tumble dryer consumes

between 3 and 4 kWh for a load of 4.5 kg of cotton.

Initiated by the European Community, this labeling

is henceforth compulsory in France for most
electrical home appliances. The classification, from
A (the most economical) to G (the hungriest), allows
the consumer to situate, at a glance, the various
models displayed.

As an example, a tumble dryer in energy class C

will consume 70 kWh/year less than a class E
tumble dryer.

2.2. - Consumption level of main appliances

3- TUMBLE DRYER
The tumble dryer is the most hygienic method of drying linen as it avoids all kinds of deposits :
dust, pollen, odors, pollution
The linen is therefore healthier and is not conducive to the outbreak of allergies.
Drying is much faster. One to two hours is sufficient in comparison with 24 to 48 hours in the open air.
The drudgery of ironing is considerably reduced. A third of the linen, in fact, no longer needs to be
ironed and the remaining two thirds are ironed more easily.
The tumble dryer is also kind to your linen :
With 5 kg of linen, the lint recovered in the filter weighs less than one gram. The wear on an item of
clothing comes, for 70%, from wearing it, 20% is due to washing, and only 10% can be attributed to
the tumble dryer.
To dry the linen, the moisture they contain must be dried.
this moisture depends on the spin speed and the nature of the linen (synthetic or cotton).
Vaporization depends on the surface of exchange between the linen and the air, obtained by agitation
in one or two directions of rotation. It is also due to the flow of air and the influx of heat.
This water vapor must then be evacuated or condensed in order to avoid a saturation of humidity in the
linen.

3.1. - Effectiveness of spin drying

example for 5 kg of dry linen washed and spun (cotton)

Weight of Quantity of
Spin Speed
spun linen water left

360 rpm 10.5 kg 5.5 liters

500 rpm 9 kg 4 liters

800 rpm 7.5 kg 2.5 liters

The efficiency, speed of drying and electricity consumption depend on the spin speed
at the end of washing.

3.2. - Operating principles

There are two families of tumble dryer.

3.2.1. - Evacuation tumble dryer

The evacuation tumble dryer expels the hot, humid air to the outside. A duct, supplied with the
appliance, must be connected to the dryers air outlet (at the rear on the side) and terminate outside
the dwelling.

3.2.2. - Condensor tumble dryer

The condensor tumble dryer removes the moisture from the air by means of a condensor. The water is
collected in a tank (to be emptied after each use).

- 7-

HYGROGAPT
TUMBLE DRYER Technical training

3.3. - Installation
Your tumble dryer releases heat, it is therefore necessary to leave a space around it so as to facilitate
the circulation of air.

Do not install the appliance on a carpeted floor in order not to interfere with the circulation of air at its
base.

3.3.1. - Evacuation tumble dryer

The hot, humid air leaving the tumble dryer must be expelled :

A : Either temporarily
by placing the extremity of the duct A
outside an open window.

B : Or directly into the room

if it is properly ventilated (if possible,
install the tumble dryer near a partially
open window).

20 cm maxi
C : Or by a fixed connection B
near the tumble dryers outlet (low air C
vent to avoid condensation in the duct).
Make sure that the exhaust duct and the
air vent grate are not obstructed.

The exhaust duct must not be extended or have more than two bends.

IMPORTANT: Never connect to a chimney conduit or an automatically-controlled mechanical

ventilation system.

3.3.2. - Condensor tumble dryer

Install the tumble dryer, preferably, in a room that is sufficiently
ventilated and whose temperature remains below 30C
throughout the drying process. If necessary, open the doors and
windows.
Do not install it in a room that is closed and too small
(8 sq.m. minimum).

3.3.3. - Electrical Connections

For safety purposes, the tumble dryer must be installed in compliance with the standards in effect in
the country involved, in particular for the earth connection.

The installation should be such that the electrical outlet is accessible at all times.

Extension cords should not be used.

Technical training SENSOR

4- HYGROCAPT SENSOR
Hygrocapt is a new sensor fitted in the latest top-loaded electronic tumble dryers. It is always located in
the outlet duct of the exhaustion or condensor models. This sensor is composed of a capacitor whose
capacity varies in relation to the degree of humidity in the air surrounding it. This capacity is measured
and then converted to a frequency by an integrated circuit in the sensor. The signal thus obtained is
analyzed by the power board. A valve, actuated by an electromagnet, is used to measure alternately
the degree of humidity of the clothes and that of the outside air. The power board controls the drying
cycle by comparing continuously these two levels of humidity. A temperature probe (NTC) placed near
the capacitor is used to monitor the temperature and actuate a safety mechanism in the event of
overheating.

4.2. - Operating principles

4.2.1. - Measurement of reference humidity (chassis)

An electromagnet, supplied with 230V, keeps the valve open for 20 seconds and allows the air in the
chassis to be drawn into the outlet duct whose internal pressure is subatmospheric. This flow of air
passes over the sensor and modifies the capacity of the capacitor.
The resulting value is converted to frequency and sent to the power board which uses it as a dry
airflow reference which has a zero relative humidity level.

4.2.2. - Measurement of humidity of linen

When the electromagnet is not powered, the spring pushes the valve forward.
The air in the chassis can no longer reach the sensor. It is consequently the humidity from the linen

4.2.3. - Interpretation of measurements

During a drying cycle, the humidity of the linen drops while that of the air inside the chassis remains
relatively stable.

After a few minutes of operation, the air in the chassis warms up and its humidity level stabilizes.
The chassis air then becomes the reference. The maximum deviation in humidity corresponds to the
maximum humidity of the linen. This deviation is memorized by the board and serves as a reference for
calculating the different drying thresholds to be reached depending on the users choice.

5- EVACUATION TUMBLE DRYER

5.1. - Operating principles

A flow of fresh air, taken in at the bottom of the dryer (A), passes through a heating coil (B). The flow of
hot, dry air thus created enters the drum through the inlet duct (C) and goes through the clothes (D).
The turbine (F) takes in the hot, humid air through the filter (E). This air is then directed by the exhaust
duct (G) outside the tumble dryer.

5.3.1. - Actuation of valve

A period of 78 seconds is used to measure alternately the humidity of the chassis and the humidity of
the clothes. At the start of the cycle, drying is done at full power. In the evacuation model, the same
motor is used for drum rotation and ventilation. Consequently, at each drum reversal heating is cut off.
during forward rotation, the air flow is only 60 cu.m/hr, power is thus reduced.

5.3.2. - Calculation of drying thresholds

Drying threshold = coefficient x deviation reference

For each threshold there is a different coefficient.

For example :
For the "Dry" drying selection, the coefficient is 0.22.
For the "Humid" selection, the coefficient is 0.69.

5.3.3. - Execution of a cycle

5.3.4. - The various steps

A : No measurement is taken into account during the first few minutes of the cycle (10 minutes) so that
the ambient air entering the chassis can warm up. This makes it possible to dry linen normally when
the ambient air is very humid.

B : The board updates and memorizes the maximum deviation as long as it is greater than that of the
"Very Humid" threshold. In this way, if the user adds wet linen at the beginning of the cycle, a new
maximum deviation can be memorized.

C : Updating of the maximum deviation is no longer possible.

D : Reduced power prevents overdrying.

E : Cooling lasts 5 minutes and is followed by decompacting.

5.3.5. - Recognition of absence of a load

The difference between the frequencies measured is very small when there are no clothes in the
tumble dryer. The thresholds calculated are reached quickly and the cycle stops after 15 minutes.

5.3.6. - Completion of Drying and Cooling Cycle

If, twice consecutively, the deviation measured is less than the degree of drying selected, a cooling
cycle is run.

This is a heatless ventilation cycle carried out with the valve closed and lasting 5 minutes.

5.3.7. - Protection of Linen

The HYGROCAPT sensors NTC temperature probe measures continuously the temperature in the
outlet duct.

For the "All Textile" and "Jeans" programs, if the temperature reaches 70C, the full power is switched
to reduced power.

For the Silk Label or Hand Washable programs, if the temperature reaches 45C, the reduced
power is switched to heat cutoff.

After the NTC probe has cooled off, normal power is restored.

If the NTC probe is short-circuited or cut off during a cycle, the program goes immediately to the
cooling phase.

at 25C.
The value of this NTC probe is 68 k

5.3.8. - Maximum Drying Time

The maximum cycle time is limited to 3 hours.

If there is no heat (thermal fuse, heating coil, thermostats, etc) the thresholds will never be reached
and the cycle time will be limited to 3 hours.

6.3.2. - Determination of maximum deviation

Maximum deviation is measured as soon as the frequency given by the air from the linen has
stabilized.

If this frequency does not stabilize, the maximum deviation is initialized at the end of 30 minutes
(case possible with a load of 4.5 kg of linen). As with the evacuation models, if the maximum deviation
increases afterwards, it will be updated (case possible if the user adds moist linen).

6.3.3. - Recognition of load

As opposed to the evacuation tumble dryer, part of the humidity is recycled after it passes through the
condensor. It is thus necessary to identify the load of linen (quantity, nature, spin level).
The load is determined by the number of measurement periods (whose duration is 41 seconds)
counted between the beginning of the program and the time when a reduction of 12% of the maximum
deviation is obtained. It consequently determines values for the thresholds to be obtained.

7- THE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS IN RELATION TO THE TEXTILES

7.1. - "Pell-Mell" or "All Textile" cycle

This is a program that fulfills the users expectations in most cases.
This program is proposed with the "Ready-to-Wear" or "Ready-to-Store" threshold as soon as the
clothes dryer is turned on.

7.2. - "Household Linen" or "Jeans" cycle

This program is recommended for a load of textiles composed exclusively of resistant cotton fabric :
sheets, dish towels, table cloths, jeans, etc

7.3. - "Silk", "Silk Label" or "Hand-Washable Textile" cycle

This program is particularly suitable for very delicate textiles : silk, light synthetic material, etc
Selection of a drying threshold is not possible.

Heating : runs at half power throughout the cycle.

Remark : this program is not at all suitable for drying cotton as the overall temperature is much lower
than that of the full-power cycle.

Cooling : lasts 16 minutes.

Protection of linen : if the NTC probe reaches 45C for exhaustion models or 50C for condensation
models, heating is turned off.

7.4. - "Aerwool", "Activwool" or "Wool Puff" cycle

This is not a drying program. It is used to ventilate or refresh textiles that are already dry, for example
woolens after remaining on the shelf for a prolonged period of time.

Heating : runs at reduced power every other period.

Cycle time : lasts 6 minutes.

Cooling : there is no cooling.

7.5. - "Dry Cleaning" cycle

This program is designed for use with commercially available special for clothes dryer dry cleaning
kits. The manufacturers instructions must be followed imperatively.

Heating :
Exhaustion : runs at reduced power at all times.
Condensation : runs by alternating full power and reduced power every other period.

Cycle time : there is a choice between 20, 30 or 40 minutes depending on the programming level.

Cooling : lasts 5 minutes and is included in the total cycle time.

Protection of linen : the safety temperature is 60C.

New care products are now on the market and can be used to refresh and clean delicately clothing
bearing the following labels :

Dry cleaning Hand wash

These products are suitable for taking care of the following articles of clothing :

Pullovers, pants, dresses, skirts, jackets, and shirts regardless of whether they are made of wool, silk,
linen, cotton, or mixed synthetic fabric.

Contents :

A small cloth, impregnated with an active solution, is used to remove small stains directly before
putting the article into the tumble dryer. It is also used to eliminate bad odors during the cleaning
cycle in the tumble dryer.

A bag for protecting the clothing.

Action :

In the tumble dryer, the heat serves to release the active agents which penetrate to the core of the
fibers. The linen is refreshed and unwrinkled at the same time.

Use :

Prior to refreshing linen in the tumble dryer, all stains that are visible and still fresh must be completely
removed. In case of deep or dried stains, professional dry cleaning is advisable.

Place 1 to 4 items of clothing in the bag. Add the small cloth making sure that it is completely
unfolded.

Close the bag and place it in the tumble dryer.

Next, program the tumble dryer.

When the cycle is completed, remove the bag from the dryer and immediately hang the items,
slightly humid, on a hanger so they do not get wrinkled.

8.2. - Connection between access board and power board

The two circuit boards each have their own microprocessor which communicate with each other via a
serial link. The information circulating over this link is as follows :

The drying indication selected by the user (access board to power board).
A code for the instantaneous status of the tumble dryer (type, door, tank, end of cycle).
The time remaining.

In the event of a problem involving the connection between the boards, the dryer stops its cycle in its
current position.

8.3. - Diagnostic Aid

Fault diagnosis is the most important part of servicing. It is not possible to do a repair job properly
without first making a good fault diagnosis.
Listening to the user and taking fully into account his complaint as well as seeking additional
information constitute a very important phase of fault diagnosis.
Systematic use of the diagnostic aid program may allow the technician to identify precisely the cause
or causes responsible for the users complaint. The simultaneous use of an ammeter will enable him to
check very quickly the complete operation of the tumble dryer.
This quickly-executed program, designed specially for maintenance, should be used to make the fault
diagnosis but also systematically after each component replacement. The technician manages
execution of the test program himself and can exit it as he desires by pressing the On/Off button.

The objective is to satisfy the user fully by repairing his appliance effectively the first time he works on it.
A technician should be capable of resolving the users complaint in less than 30 minutes.

On the back of each tumble dryer is a servicing guide reserved for the technician and
containing :
