Surrealism

a cultural movement that was expressed through art, literature, and even politics.
embraced the psychoanalytical idea of unconscious desires, or things we want that we
don't know we want.

Slide 2

Why did surrealism sprang up in 1924?

Slide 3

Surrealism grew out of the Dada movement, which was also in rebellion against middle-
class complacency.
Dada was a movement in which artists stated their disgust with the war and with life in
general.
In 1922, though the movement was started to emphasize nonconformity, Picabia declared
Dada to be dead.

Slide 4

Andre Breton

a French poet, a major member of Dada movement and

the founder of Surrealism.
Known as the Pope of Surrealism
In 1924, he wrote the Surrealist Manifesto
Brenton said that pure psychic automatism was the
most important principle of Surrealism.

Slide 5
Sigmund Freud

Father of Psychoanalysis
In 1900, Freud published The Interpretation of
Dreams, and introduced the wider public to the
notion of the unconscious mind.
Inspired many Surrealists, but two different
interpretations of his ideas lead to two different types of
Surrealists, Automatists and Veristic Surrealists
He said, A dream that is not interpreted is like a letter that is not opened,

Slide 6

Surrealists believed in the innocent eye, that art was created in the unconscious mind
Most Surrealists worked with psychology and fantastic visual techniques, basing their art
on memories, feelings, and dreams.
The Surrealist artists sought to channel the unconscious as a means to unlock the power
of the imagination.\

Slide 7

Around the same time that Breton published his inaugural manifesto, the group began
publishing the journal La Rvolution surraliste.
In 1924, the Bureau for Surrealist Research or Centrale Surraliste was also established in
Paris.
In January of 1925, the Bureau officially published its revolutionary intent that was
signed by 27 people, including Breton, Ernst, and Masson.
