Main Concept/s: Sentence Structure: simple sentences, compound sentences


and complex sentences

Introduction/Warm Up
-Get english books out, rule line under previous work and write date (have
date on the board)
-WALT-construct simple sentences into compound sentences and
discovering what makes a compound sentence different to a complex
sentence
-Put a simple sentence onto the board -ask the students what could make
the sentence better e.g. The puppy was cute.
-remember to state expectations-when answering questions put hand up,
doing work with minimal noise
-Remember the 1,2,3 step with behaviour, enforce the time out when
necessary
-Do another simple sentence on the board and get a student up to make it a
compound sentence
-look at what conjunctions are-get students to circle the conjunctions in the
sentences
-compound means put two parts together

Body
Time: 20 mins
-Have a word document with sentences on the board and the coordinating
conjunction missing so students must copy the sentences from the board while
filling in the blanks. -this also practices handwriting
-for differentiation have separate sheet for Tray, John and Angus so they dont have
to copy from the board.
-once all students are done go through the answers-get students to come up and fill
in the blanks

Conclusions
-Look at complex sentences, difference between complex and compound
-write sentences on the board and get students to make it more complex e.g. My
mum smiled
-or if just completing the sentence is too much try putting up My mum smiled
__________ I made dinner. -filling in the blanks and then looking at how My mum
smiled is a sentence that can stand alone but when I made dinner needs to have
something before it to make sure it flows
