Hurricanes generally occur in the North Atlantic from May through November, with the
peak of the hurricane season in September. only rarely will they occur from December
through April in that part of Ocean. The main reason for the occurence of hurricanes during
this period is that the temperature on the waters surface is at its warmest and the humidity of
the air is at its highest.
Of the tropical storms that occur each year in the North Atlantic, only about five on the
average, are powerful enough to be called hurricanes. To be classified as a hurricane, a
tropical storm must have winds reaching speeds of at least 117 kilometers per hour, but the
winds are often much stronger than that. The winds of intense hurricanes can easily surpass
240 kilometers per hour.

The Golden Age of Railroads refers to the period from the end of the Civil War to the
beginning of World War I when railroads flourished and, in fact, maintained a near monopoly
in mass transportation in the United States. One of the significant developments during the
period was the notable increase in uniformity, particulary through the sandarization of track
gauge and time.
At the end of the Civil War, only about half of the nations railroad track was laid at what
it now the standard gauge of 1.4 meters, much of the rest, particulary in the sothern states,
had a 1.5 meter gauge. During the postwar years, tracks were converted to the 1.4 meter
gauge, and by June 1, 1886, the standarization of tracks was completed, resulting in increased
efficiency and economy in the rail system.
A further boon to railroad efficiency was the implementation of standard time in 1883.
With the adoption of standard time, four time zones were established across the country, thus
simplifying railroad scheduling and improving the efficiency of railroad service.

The Alaska Pipeline starts at the frozen edge of the Arctic Ocean. It Stretched
Southward accross the largest and northernmost state in United States, ending at a remote ice-
free seaport village nearly 800 miles from where it begins. It is massive in size and extremely
complicated to operate.
The steel pipe crosses windswept plains and endless miles of delicate tundra that tops
the frozen ground. It weaves through crooked canyons, climbs sheer mountains, plunges over
rocky crags, makes its way through thick forests, and passes over or under hundreds of rivers
and streams. The pipe is 4 feet in diameter, and up to 2 million barrels (or 84 million gallons),
of crude oil can be pumped through it daily.
Resting on H-Shaped steel racks called bents, long sections of the pipeline follow a
zigzag course high above the frozen Earth. Other long sections drop out of sight beneath
spongy or rocky ground and return to the surface later on. The pattern of the pipelines up-
and-down route is determined by the often harsh demands of arctic and subarctic climate, the
tortuous lay of the land, and the varied composition of soils, rock, or permafrost (permanently
frozen ground). A little more than half of the pipeline is elevated above the ground. The
remainder is burried anywhere from 3 to 12 feet, depending largely upon the type of terrain
and the properties of the soil.
One of the largest in the world, the pipeline cost approximately $8billion and is by far
the biggest and most expensive construction project ever undertaken by private industry. In
fact, no single bussiness could raise that much money, so eight major oil companies formed a
consortium in order to share the costs. Each company controlled oil rights to particular shares
of land in the oil fields, and paid into the pipeline construction fund according to the size of
its holdings. Today, despite enoemous problem of climate, supply shortages, equipment
breakdowns, labor disagreements, treacherous terrain, a certain amount of missmanagement,
and even theft, the Alaska pipeline has been completed and is operating.
