EXERCISE CHAPTER 15

Reading 1 for question 1 - 6

Many historical linguists are able to trace modern complex languages back to earlier
languages, but in order to answer the question of how omplex langueges are actually formed,
the researcher needs to observe how langueges are started from scratch. To find out how
grammer is created, someone needs to be present at time of a language`s creation, documenting
its emergence. However , this is possible.
Some of the most recent langueges evolved due to the Atlantic slave trade. At the time,
slaves from a number of different ethnicities were forced to work together under colonizer`s
rule. Since they had no opportunity to learn each other`s langueges , they developed a make
shift language called a pidgin. Pidgins are strings of words copied from the language of the
landowner . They have little in the way of grammer, and in many cases it is difficult for a listener
to deduce when an event happened. And who did what to whom. Speeakers need to use
circumlocution in order to make their meaning understood. Interestingly, however, all it takes
for a pidgin to become a complex language is for a group of children to be ecposed to it when
they learn their mother tongue. Slave children did not simply copy the strings of words uttered
by their elders, they adapted their word to create a new , expressive language . Complex
grammar systems which emerge from pidgins are termed creoles, and they are invented by
children.
Some ilnguists believe that many most established languages were creoles at first. The
English past tense ed ending may have evolved from the ver do it ended mayonce have been
it end did, thus , it would appear that even the most widespread languages were partly created
by children. Children appear to have innate grammatical mecahanism in thei brains, which
emerges when they are first trying to make sense of the owrd near them. Their minds can
serve to create logical , complex structures , even when there iis no grammer present for the to
copy.

Reading 2 for questions 7 - 13

Supergiants can have masses from 10 to 70 solar masses and brightness from 30,000 up
to hundreds of thousands times the solar luminosity. They vary greatly in radius, usually from
30 to 500, or even in excess of 1,000 solar radii. The Stefan-Boltzmann law dictates that the
relatively cool surfaces of red supergiants radiate much less energy per unit area than those of
blue supergiants; thus, for a given luminosity red supergiants are larger than their blue
counterparts.
The most massive superstars in the Galaxy have surface temperatures of between
20,000 - 50,000C and appear blue in colour. They are designated 'blue supergiants due to their
appearance and the enormous amounts of energy that they can radiate. The best known
example is Rigel, the brightest star in the constellation of Orion. It has a mass of around 20 times
that of the Sun and gives out more light than 60,000 suns added together.
Whereas, red supergiants are supergiant stars which are the largest stars in the universe
in terms of physical size. These stars have very cool surface temperatures (3,227- 4,227 degree
Celcius), and enormous radii. The four largest known red supergiants in the Galaxy are l\/lu
Cephei, KW Sagitarii, V354 Cephei, and KY Cygni, which all have radii about 1500 times that of
the sun (about 7 times as far as the. Earth is from the sun). The radius of most red giants is
between 200 and 800 times that of the sun, which is still enough to reach from the sun to Earth
and beyond.
