Syllabus 9.5, Introduced Species and the Australian Environment
H13 Uses terminology and reporting styles appropriately and successfully to
communicate information and understanding
H15 Explains why an investigation is best undertaken individually or by a team
H16 Justifies positive values about and attitudes towards the living and non-living
components of the environment; ethical behaviour; and a desire for critical
evaluation of the consequences of the applications of science

This assessment task should be given to your teacher on the due date in class.

2. Get a misadventure from the head teacher
3. Complete all paperwork and obtain note from your parent/caregiver or medical

HSC Earth and Environmental Assessment: Case Study
Introduced Species
For this task you will be working in pairs. This task is broken up into three parts: research,
presentation, and self evaluation.

Part 1, research:
For this part of the assignment you will be working with your partner to research an
introduced species. The species can be animal or plant. While researching you will be using
the scaffold provided to record information such as:
the history of introduction
the environmental conditions leading to the organism becoming a pest
suitable habitat
suitable climatic condition
range of food resources
relative lack of natural predators/grazers
high reproductive capacity
well-developed dispersal mechanisms
the impact on the physical environment
control strategies
You will be provided with three in class computer lessons to complete all research. At the
end of the third lesson you will hand in your information which will be marked and provided
with feedback.
This feedback will be returned to you at the beginning of the following lesson. For the rest
of this lesson you will work with your partner to implement the feedback and plan for your
presentation for part 2.

Part 2, Presentation:
In your pairs you must present your information to your class. You must create a way to
illustrate the information from Part 1 which could be in the form of:
Video/animation
Powerpoint presentation
Poster/brochure
Other
This should assist you in presenting all of the information gathered in Part A. Be creative!

All pairs must mark the other presentations using the marking rubric provided. The marks
you give will not go towards the other presentations actual marks, but how accurately you
assess the other presentations will affect your own mark!

Part 3, self evaluation:
Finally, you will write a couple paragraphs on ways you could improve your form of
presentation. This could include simple changes you could make to your own materials or
you could even use the other groups as examples and explain how their form of
presentation would be better suited for illustrating your information.

This part is to be done individually! It will also include a marking rubric to assess your
partners contribution to the assignment.
