WELCOME MESSAGE TO FRESHERS

IwishtocongratulateyouuponsecuringaseatattheUniversityofMauritius,themostprestigioustertiary
institutioninMauritius.Universitylifeisindeedanewexperience.

As we embark on a new academic year, I look forward to the campus coming alive again and to the
achievementsofourstudentsandfaculty.Ifwecontinuetobuildupontherealisationoflastyear,thefutureis
brightindeed.Universitylifeisfullofchallengesforastudent.
Itcanbeexhilaratingandattimesfullofhardships.Allstudentsgenerallyfacealotofchallengesespecially
thefreshers.TransitiontoUniversityisanewchapterinyourlifeandmostofyoutodayhavealotofhopes
and expectations with a tinge of apprehension. University is very much different from college life and you
willdiscovernewteachingmethodsandlearntostudyindependently.Ihavetotalfaiththat,withsomeefforts
andcommitment,youwillallcopewell.

AsyoujointheFacultyofEngineering,alittlebitofhistoryisimportant.TheFacultywasestablishedin1968
anditsaimistoprovideaworldclasseducationinEngineering,SustainableProductDesignandComputer.
The Faculty was originally called the School of Industrial Technology. During its first years, it focused on
running courses at certificate and diploma levels. The Faculty evolved at a reasonable pace with the first
engineering undergraduate courses offered in 1978, the first taught MSc courses in 1997 and the first PhD
awarded in 1984. The Faculty of Engineering is composed presently of six Departments and offers
undergraduate BEng.(Hons) programmes which satisfy the academic requirements of the Council of
RegisteredProfessionalEngineers.TheFacultyalsooffersthreeyearBSc(Hons)programmesinthevarious
fieldsofIT,ICT,andSustainableProductDesign.TwoyearparttimeMScprogrammesinvariousfieldsare
alsoofferedmainlyforworkingprofessionals

TherecognitionofadegreeworldwideiswhatstudentslookforwhentheyjoinaUniversity.Iampleasedto
sharewithyouthatthefacultyissparingnoeffortstomeetthatexpectation.ToensurethatourEngineering
degree is recognised worldwide we are presently in the process of accrediting them with the Engineering
CouncilofSouthAfrica(ECSA),inlinewiththeWashingtonAccordonaccreditation.Thismeansthatour
programmes will be permanently under review in order to enable changes proposed by the ECSA to be
implementedasandwhentheyaremade.

Inordertocaterfortherequirementsofaccreditationwearecurrentlyreviewingourpassmarksfrom40%to
50%,bothforcourseworkandexaminations.However,studentswhofailinmorethantwomoduleswillneed
torepeattheyear,whilestudentsfailinginoneortwomoduleswillbeallowedtoresitthesemodulesbefore
thenewacademicyearbegins.Anystudentwhofailsintheresitexaminationswillhavetorepeatafullyear.
WenotethateveryyearnumerousstudentsattheFacultyhavetorepeatyearoneoraresimplyterminated.

Universitylifecanbeverychallenging,butitisaboveallaplaceoflearningandprogressing.Gooddiscipline
willtakeyourstepsforwardandwillberewarding.Solearntoevaluateyourprioritieswellbecauseyoudo
not want to look back and say you could have done better. Hard work, focus and determination are your
keywords. Your challenge is to attend all the classes, complete and submit all course works on time, study
hardandaimathighmarks.Withoutthesebasicprinciples,youwillhavebadsurpriseswhichwillmeanloss
oftime,moneyandopportunitiesforyouaswellasfortheUniversity.Nothingworthhavingcomeseasy.Our
academics are very open and devoted and they are available to advise and guide you. It is your duty and
responsibilitytoknockattheirdoorsandgettheiradviceonmattersrelatingtoyourstudiesandwellbeing.

SoIwishyouallwellandmayyourstayattheUniversitybefruitful,successfulandmostmemorable.
