OBJECTIVES
The goal of this course is to understand musical structures through harmonic and formal
analysis, and to study the elements contributing to common music forms through score
analysis, listening and discussion.

1. Structural Phenomena
2. Motives & Themes
3. Phrases, Phrase Structures
4. Key Relationships
5. Small forms: Simple Binary, Rounded Binary, Ternary
6. Larger forms: Sonata, Rondo, Sonata-Rondo & Composite Ternary
7. Variation Technique
8. Form in 20th Century Music
9. Analysis of music for large ensembles
10. Basic elements of form in 20th Century Popular Music

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Regular assistance to class meetings
Constant participation in classroom discussion and
activities
Successful completion of classroom work and home
assignments

RULES

the class. In the case of an urgent matter, notify your instructor and
you can take or make your call outside the classroom.
Do not allow unauthorized students access to the classroom.
Eating or drinking is not allowed inside the classroom.

ASSIGNMENTS
There will be regular homework based on the material been covered in class.

ATTENDANCE
The students presence is key for the learning process of this course. Thus,
attendance to class is absolutely required. Students are also required to be on time to
each session. Arriving late or leaving before the class is over will affect negatively the
students learning process and his or her attendance grade.
The instructor will be available during his office hours to provide the student
additional individualized help.

CLASS PARTICIPATION
The format of the course requires active participation of the students as the
instructor engages with them in discussions. It is part of the students responsibility to be
actively involved and contribute in these discussions.

GRADING SCALE
The calculation of the final grade will be as follows:
1. Homework 30%
2. Attendance: 30%
3. Class participation: 30%
4. Exams: 10%

For the final course grad, a ten-point grading scale will be used.
100 - 90=A
8980 = B
7970 = C
6960 = D
590 = F
