On October 31st 2009 national and local partners joined DCH at our
NeighborWoods Halloween Planting. The Tree Program planted 43 trees at 6
affordable housing locations throughout the city: Prestwyck Court Townhomes
(Dept. of Real Estate and Housing), Franklin Chase (Wilmington Housing
Partnership), Gardner Way II, Greenbridge II, Miller’s Row (Habitat for
Humanity), and 1300 NE Blvd. on Thatcher St. Volunteers from the Home
Depot, local Tree Stewards, City of Wilmington, City Council, and Wilmington
Charter School’s Habitat for Humanity, joined DCH staff on the wet Halloween
morning to celebrate the strong partnerships between the City of Wilmington and
non-profit organizations.

The Home Depot Foundation has championed the formation of these

partnerships between affordable housing groups and urban forestry through their
Challenge Grant Program. In 2009 the Home Depot Foundation working with
the Alliance for Community Trees awarded 10 Challenge Grants to tree planting
organizations across the U.S. DCH was proud to be one of the recipients this
year. Thank you to all those who made this event a success!

Delaware Center for Horticulture Tree Program, received

national recognition in November from the Washington, DC-
based Alliance for Community Trees, a nonprofit urban
forestry organization. We received the organization’s
“NeighborWoods Scholarship,” and were 1 of 10 communities
to receive the “NeighborWoods Challenge Grant” donated by
The Home Depot Foundation, the leader in investing in
nonprofit organizations that are in the business of building
better communities through urban forestry. This scholarship
allowed us to present about our partnerships with local
affordable housing initiatives at the National Partners in
Community Forestry Conference in Portland, Oregon.
