LANGUAGE ARTS CALENDAR


This month, we have several fiction and non-fiction texts
that we will read. From Pops Bridge and Traits of a Hero 10/4 = PTO Walk-to-School Day
to Bat Loves the Night, we will focus on reading fluency
and expression as well as skills such as compare & contrast 10/4 = K-5 Math Night for
and sequence of events. We will extend our reading to Parents
biographies as we prepare to research and write a report
on a famous figure. This will be a multi-paragraph report 10/6 = Western Day
that will require reading books and online sources. The
kids will publish their reports on Google Docs and do an 10/9-10/13 = Book Fair Week
oral presentation dressed up as their famous person!
Grammar in October will include common & proper 10/11 = Saints Store open at
nouns, -s and es endings for plural nouns, verb tenses, lunch
suffixes, and correct use of commas.

MATH 10/16-10/20 = Parent/Teacher
October is the start of multiplication and division the Conferences
topic all of the 3rd graders have been waiting for! We begin
the unit focusing on arrays as a model for understanding 10/19 = Great American Shake-
the concept of rows and columns, repeated addition, and Out Earthquake Drill
multiplication. Students use the language of
multiplication as they learn what factors are and 10/23-10/27 = Red Ribbon Week
differentiate between the size of groups and the number of
groups within a given context. In this module, the factors 10/24 -10/25 = Roynon Museum
2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 provide an entry point for moving into Field Trips
more difficult factors in later modules. Arrays will be the
cornerstone of this module in developing understanding 10/27 = Harvest Night
of these operations.
