introduction

T he tradition of the campfire tale is timeless.

From the stories of gods and the great hunt whispered around fires in prehistoric caves
to the gory renditions of hook-handed serial killers at sleepaway camp, these tales embed
themselves in our conscious and live on well past that night just like tonight. These
Campfire Tales are a little younger than that.
First promised just over a year ago as a triad of horror stories for use with Little Fears
Nightmare Edition, Campfire Tales are finally seeing release as a series of standalone
episodes released monthly and themed to the appropriate season or holiday. The next one,
The Fall Harvest, is schedule for release in mid- to late November.
Whats In Here
This episode, Beggars Night, is written as a standalone collection of eleven scenes,
ready for use in an existing season of play or to set off a new group of young adventurers
on the dark path of monster hunting. It takes place at Halloween but, as you have
probably already assumed, on a night that will prove to be anything but typical.
Each scene covers one major action and usually includes a revelation that advances the
plot and bridges to the next scene. As the GM, you may need to drop or add scenes based
on the characters actions but as long as you can stick the big reveals and keep things
relatively on track, youll do fine.
Characters
Players need to provide their own characters but all monsters and major GMCs are
included with each scenario. As the game moderator, all you need to do is read over the
scenario until youre comfortable with the basics and then youre good to go.
Monsters and GMCs
The monsters used in this episode are included in the back along with a handful of
useful GMCs.
And So Then
Without further ado, lets gather round the kindling and settle in for a tale. Gather
close now, youll need the warmth. It looks to be a cold night and this is sure to send a
shiver down your spine.
Hey There, Players
The following episodes are written specifically for the game moderator and are not
intended to be read by potential players. So if you want to retain any level of surprise,
dont read any further.

NIGHT
campfire tales
Some monsters want more than just candy.

BEGGARS Night
Halloween is finally here and the street brims with the spirit of the season. Cottony
webs criss-cross porch posts. Eerie music lilts out of the house and onto the streets. Jack-
o-lanterns glow on stoops, beckoning children with their flickering lights. As the sky
darkens and the streets fill with eager children, decked out in all manner of creepy mask
and dazzling costume, other things are running alongside them.
A certain band of mischievous monsters is using the cover of costumed kiddies to
commit perilous pranks and set dangerous traps. At first its fun and gamesegged
houses, toilet papered treesbut then it gets worse with flaming poo bombs and broken
glass across the street.
But all this chaos isnt just for sport. Its to distract everyone from whats really going
on.
Who the Characters Are
Whatever the kids origins, theyre all trick-or-treating in the same neighborhood.
Chances are most of the kids live in that area with maybe one or two driven in from less
generous home turf.
Inciting Incident
What begins as a normal night of spooking younger kids and begging for sugar gets
deadly serious when some friends of the player characters vanish in plain sight.

Whatcha Goin As?

Have each player character describe what he or she is dressing up for trick-or-
treating.

GMCs
There are lots of kids out tonight but these four will come into play in the story. One or
more of the player characters may know at least one of these kids from school (adjust the
age if necessary). The two Parker kids live in the same neighborhood as one of the player
characters which means Angeliah does too. If this doesnt fit the fiction your group has
already established, adjust as necessary. Really, you just need reasons for these four kids to
be trick-or-treating with each other and for the player characters to become invested in
them once things go weird.
Davin Rourke, 10, Mummy
Davins not a mean kid but hes not especially sympathetic either. Hes a tough kid and
assumes everyone else is too. He doesnt go for crying or tattling and never lets anyone call
him chicken. If you know Davin, you know he doesnt take crap from nobody.
Davin and Marissa have been friends since he was in preschool and go trick-or-treating
together every year. Some of his friends give him guff about being in love with Marissa
but he shakes it off. Shes a cool girl, thats all, so you better just shut up about it.

6
Beggars Night
Angeliah Harrison, 8, Fairy Princess
Angeliah is Marissas neighbor. The older girl volunteered to walk her around so Anges
dad could stay home and hand out candy. Ange likes Marissa well enough, though
Marissa talks a bit too much for the younger girls liking.
Angeliah doesnt like confrontation and will go to great lengths to avoid it. She also
doesnt like fairies or princesses very much but her dads really busy and it was one of
the few costumes left by the time he got around to getting one and, hey, its better than
dressing up as a cheerleader (again).
Kai Parker, 9, Dinosaur
Kai doesnt like Halloween much. And he likes his stupid dinosaur costume even less.
But his mom is so proud of it (even though its store-bought) and little Kais going to
be like all the other boys, goshdarnit, so he has no choice but to tail his big sister on this
stupid holiday instead of staying inside and reading like he originally planned.
Despite being neighbors and fairly close in age, Kai and Angeliah dont hang out and
rarely talk. They just dont have much in common. Perhaps they can commiserate over
having to wear their respective costumes though.
Marissa Parker, 12, Witch
Marissa loves Halloween. Shell probably dress up for it her entire life. While some of
her friends look down on the traditions now, eschewing pumpkin carving and trick-or-
treating for more mature pursuits, Marissa is younger than ever this time of year. The fact
her brother doesnt like the day completely confounds her. How could anyone not like
Halloween?
Marissa is the oldest and the one in charge. Despite her overflowing excitement, she
takes being in charge very seriously and makes sure the kids go to the door as a group, no
one leaves the others, and everyone holds hands when crossing the street.
The Scenes
The following scenes form the basic story of Beggars Night. This is just a framework
though, a backbone, and a good group will go off-script numerous times. The best advice
is to roll with it, react to their decisions, and try to aid them back on the path if they lose
the thread or hit a dramatic dead end.
Scene #1
Everything starts out fine, your typical Halloween night. The player characters
have converged at one of their houses to prepare for the nights festivities. The whole
neighborhood is decked out for the season, porchlights are on and the sidewalks are
already filling with ghouls of all shades, signs itll be a busy night.
This is a Dramatic Scene. The kids are getting into character, finalizing their make-up,
talking over maximum candy-acquiring strategies, grousing about school the past week,
the test on Monday, recounting their favorite monster movie moments, and otherwise
getting ready for the best night of their lives. The mood is light, fun, and anticipatory.
By the end of the scene, they should be on street, socializing with other kids and maybe
hitting up a few houses.
The kids should see Davin, Marissa, and crew heading out from the Parker household.
Have someone from that group (whoever is similar in age to a cast member) engage with

7
campfire tales
the player characters, catch up on things, maybe drop some gossip about whos handing
out the full-sized bars and which houses are trying to pass off apples as candy. Be sure to
point out Angeliah, at least so her name is known to the players.
Marissa and company will say their goodbyes before heading off in their own direction.
The player characters are now free to move about the neighborhood.
Scene #2
As stated earlier, lots of houses are giving out candy this year. And lots of kids are on
the sidewalks. Long-time residents may remark how this is the busiest theyve ever seen
the place. Cars line the street as folks from outside the neighborhood bring their kids to
where the gettings good. Build an almost claustrophobic sense of how dense the crowd
can get at times.
During this scene, the kids walk by the Lawrence residence. Well, it was the Lawrence
residence before they moved away about a year or so ago. Nothing foul, nothing strange
Mrs. Lawrence took a job at big university on the coast and her family is following after.
The place has been for sale ever since. Some grown-ups talk about the market being
responsible for the house not moving. Its a nice place, two big stories and a basement.
When Rainie Lawrence used to live there, her dad built the downstairs into a game room
with a pool table, an old pinball machine, and a big television with a GameStation 3 and
tons of games. It was a popular hangout for Rainies friends.
If anyone checks out the house, they wont find anything remarkable about it. The lights
are off, the doors are locked, and nothing has been disturbed. No reason to waste time
with it when theres candy to be had elsewhere.
Coming up on one of the other houses, the player characters will find a bag sticking
out of the hedgerows that split that houses yard from its neighbors. The bag is thick
black plastic with a white drawstring and has a big purple bat in the middle. The words
I Go Batty for Candy! circle the image in glow-in-the-dark orange letters. Whoever
looks inside will find some pretty decent candy and a name written in permanent marker:
Angeliah.
This is a Spotlight Scene. They need to find Angeliah and give back her bag. Marissa,
Davin, and Kai are close by but theyre not trick-or-treating. Instead, theyre huddled in a
group near the corner of the street. Marissa looks worried as does Davin; both are talking
quickly and looking around, trying to see over the tops of the cars and bigger kids. Kai
seems less concerned. His body language makes it apparent he doesnt want to be doing
any of this.
If the player characters dont look for Angeliah then Marissa, Davin, and Kai will find
them. Marissa will spot them, come over, and ask if theyve seen Angeliah.
When the characters talk with Marissa and the others (no matter who initiates the
conversation), theyll learn that Angeliah is missing. Marissa claims she just saw the girl
not two minutes before.
I had my eye on her the whole time. Im very responsible, shell say. She must have
run off.
Or got kidnapped, Davin will joke.
Marissa will ask (and, if they refuse, beg) the player characters to help her find
Angeliah. The player characters can accept or deny the requestor break up into a group

8
Beggars Night
thats helping and a group thats not. Whenever the decision is made, whatever it is, the
scene ends.
Scene #3
If all the player characters volunteer to help, the kids split into two groups. Marissa,
Davin, and Kai will go one way while the player characters will go another. If the player
characters decide they want to split up, thats just fine.
If some decide they dont want to help, the kids will split into three groups. Marissa,
Kai, and Davin will go one way, the cast members who are helping will go another way,
and those not helping will go in a third direction.
If none of the player characters decide to help find Angeliah, have them all continue
about their trick-or-treating per usual.
Those Looking for Angeliah
Search though they might, Angeliahs just not around right now. If they look hard
enough, theyll find a wand that could be hers but no further clues as to where she is
or has been. (The wand could be anywhere but I recommend only revealing it if theyre
dogged in their search.)
This is an Investigation Scene and its all about finding Angeliah.
As they search the neighborhood, the player characters will run into other groups that
are missing members. A couple trick-or-treaters may approach the cast members with
questions about their friends or the characters may overhear kids calling out for their
friends.
If asked about their friends, those looking can go on and on about what the missing
kids look like but the only useful information is what costume they were wearing. The
costumes run the gamut (use your own favorite Halloween costumes) but all are fairly
high-quality costumes, no sheet-ghosts in the mix.
In total, about five or six kids appear to be missing. Out of the groups that lost a kid,
none had an adult amongst them. The oldest kid is 13 or 14.
Eventually, the kids will regroup with Marissa and company either at a preordained
place and time or a coincidental convergence somewhere in the neighborhood. Marissa
hasnt had much luck either but shes heard other kids are missing also. Davin thinks
a kidnapper is on the loose. Kai thinks theyre probably all playing hide and seek or
something stupid like that.
Those Just Looking for Candy
Let the trick-or-treating continue per usual for a couple houses but at one of the houses
have the cast find a Dracula mask thats been torn nearly in half. There are spots of blood
on the inside as well. This could be written off as fake blood (a reasonable assumption) but
if any cast member has a way of testing it, theyll find it isnt. The blood is real.
This alone could be explained a couple different ways but the later discovery of a pillow
casealso with blood on itshould clue them into the fact theres something foul afoot.
Further exploration and investigation wont reveal much. If no ones found it yet, someone
will find Angeliahs wand as above.
Along the way to finding these clues, the cast members will hear the same rumors
as in the above section. Other kids are missing, about five or six total, and the trick-or-
treaters are really starting to get worried. On top of that, someones egging houses in the

9
campfire tales
neighborhood, causing some of the better houses to call it an early night.
This is a Dramatic Scene. The characters will find some clues but its really about their
reaction to those clues and the general milling about the neighborhood, interacting with
other kids, and dealing with the rising sense of tension they should be feeling as more
pieces are discovered.
Resolving the Scene
As this scene could play out a few different ways, it can also end a few different ways.
If the cast split up, the characters should eventually regroup with the others who are
either talking to Marissa or about to.
If the cast stayed together to look for candy, theyll run into Marissa who will mention
that other kids are missing.
However they meet up with her, Marissa is close to completely freaking out. She
doesnt want to go to an adult (No one will ever trust me again! We have to find
Angeliah!) and will beg, plead, and give away all her candy to avoid doing so. Unlike in
real life, going to an adult in this game is generally frowned upon anyway (it usually ends
the suspense and undermines the kids as protagonists premise) but a missing kid could
also shut down all trick-or-treating for everybody. Do the kids really want to face the
wrath of hundreds of suddenly candy-deprived peers?
Marissa wants to know one thing, What do we do now? Thats a good question, and
one the player characters will have to answer in the next scene.
Scene #4
The answer to Marissas question falls on the players. The obvious solutions are:
Keep Looking for Angeliah
This is the logical next step. They could split up or stick together. Splitting up covers
more ground but sticking together is safer. Either way, the objective is to unearth
wherever the little girl has gotten off to.
If the group chooses to do this, theyll wander around the neighborhood but not find
much that will clue them into what happened. The other groups who lost members back
in Scene 3 are also investigating and are open to sharing their data, which is distressingly
thin on details.
One of the groups, who lost a 9-year old boy named Gareth, found him again almost
immediately and a second group, who lost a 10-year old girl named Ryanne, found her
just a few minutes ago. Gareth had just wandered off and was temporarily lost in the
shuffle but Ryanne tells the player characters something very interesting.
Ryanne says she was standing by her older brother Nathan when some big ugly kid
with the most disgusting mask ever grabbed her pumpkin bucket out of her hands and
headed off towards the spooky house (her name for the Lawrence house, the one thats
been on the market for a while now). She says she told Nathan where she was going (the
13-year old denies this) and didnt mean to worry anybody. Anyway, the kid must have
been scared of her because he dropped the bucket (spilling my candy everywhere too
which was a huge pain to pick up) and then just disappeared. If pressed about the thief s
disappearance, Ryanne will say he vanished into a cloud of smoke. Nathan tells her to
stop making up stories and then drags his sister and her friends away from the cast in
order to finish up this stupid trick-or-treats thing.

10
Beggars Night
Find Some Grown-Ups
Despite Marissas protestations, bringing the matter to an adult is an option. In the
real world, its the best optionremember, kids!though it presents some problems in a
game such as this. The closest grown-ups are Mr. and Mrs. Parker, Angeliahs single dad
Jeremy, and whoever might be around of the player characters parents.
Going to an adult essentially ends the proceedings (or seriously derails them) so the
best thing to do in order to keep the action going and the focus on the kids is to intervene
before they get to a grown-up. If the kids are adamant about going to a grown-up, have
them run into Ryanne who has just retrieved her pumpkin bucket from some really ugly
kid who stole it from her. Shell relay the same information listed above and ask the
kids to help her find her brother Nathan, who is dressed like a teenager, and her other
friends.
Of course, your kids may come up with something wildly different
Whatever they decide, go with the flow.
Important Thing
The important thing here, important to the plot anyway, is that somewhere along
whichever path the kids chose, Kai will go missing. Hell go use the bathroom and not
come back, maybe, or hell think he sees Angeliah and will take off so fast he gets out of
sight before the other kids can catch up, or everyone will simply have their backs turned
and hell up and vanish just like that.
Marissa is doing her best to keep it together but shes barely maintaining. And who
can blame her? The other three kids were her responsibility and if the player characters
cant help her find Angeliah, shes as good as dead. How will anyone ever be able to trust
her again? How will she be able to explain what happened? These are the questions
running through her mind this scene and are really all shell be able to talk about. If an
adult starts interrogating her, the girl will stutter and laugh nervously and will be useless
for information. If pressured, this will all come flooding out in spite of herself. She will
not hold it together under pressure and its best if a cast member takes the lead on any
interactions involving adults, especially authority figures.
This is a Dramatic Scene. The kids are dealing with Angeliahs disappearance and
gaining new information about what might be going on. Kais disappearance is the
hammer falling, the bottom dropping, and should really be that oh crap moment where
the air gets completely sucked out of the room. Once it happens, Marissa will completely
flip.
Hopefully the player characters will be able to pull her back together because once shes
(relatively) sane again, theres some good news waiting for everybody.
Wherever they are in the neighborhood, theyll hear a rustling (or shuffling or bumping
into a table, whatever fits the location and level of suspense). Anyone who looks will see
Angeliah standing wherever the noise was, still in her fairy princess costume, oblivious to
the fact everyone is so worried. Her face is a dirty, her hair and clothes a little disheveled,
but otherwise she is a-okay.
Or so it appears.
Scene #5
Hello, shell say. Where have you all been?

11
campfire tales
If no one else does it, Marissa will run to Angeliah and grab her into a big hug. There
you are! Oh thank God!
Angeliah is back but theres something not right. Her sentences are very formal, shes
almost absurdly curious, and while she recognizes the other kids she gets simple facts
about them wrong (where they live, what they like, their last names).
If asked where shes been, Angeliah says she got lost and offers no useful information
beyond that. She doesnt know where Kaior any of the other kidswent off to but will
tag along as the other kids go looking.
This is a Spotlight Scene. Though the context is looking for Kai and the mood may
seems like an investigation what this scenes really about is noting how strange Angeliah
is acting. Keep the focus on that. Act against whatever personality traits youve already
established for her and play up her unsettling speech pattern and the alien way she
regards common objects. Shell even make mention of the strange faces everyones
wearing and how candy tastes like dead things.
Something else to bring up is the elevated level of vandalism: the smashed jack-o-
lanterns, cars covered in aerosol string, spray painted mailboxes. The adults are none too
happy about how the kids seem to be behaving. This has resulted in some kids being taken
out of the neighborhood and some of the homeowners turning off their porchlights.
Its also brought more patrol cars in the neighborhood which Angeliah appears keen on
avoiding at all costs. Something about the flashing lights, she says.
Presuming the group looks for Kai, theyll find him pretty easily. Or a close
approximation of him at least.
Theyll find a kid dressed in Kais dinosaur costume but the kid isnt Kai. In fact, its
not even a kid. While mostly human-looking, the creature in Kais suit has long sharp
teeth, large bloodshot eyes, and pale skin. And something is moving under that skinlike
a cockroach under a dinner napkinwith the things face slowly changing. In time,
whatever this is will look just like Kai.
But before it will get that far, things are going to get hairy.
Scene #6
Upon being spotted, Kai will take off full-sprint. Its goal is to get to some secluded
spot, preferably away from the player characters, but depending on the actions of the cast
it may not make it very far. It wants away from the crowd though and will angle towards
that at the very least.
As the cast rounds a corner following Kai, someone leaps out of a tree and lands
between Kai and the player characters. Dressed in a torn plaid shirt, dirty jeans, big boots,
and a werewolf mask, the kid cuts the pretty imposing figure of a wolfman. Hard to say
how he got his eyes to glow yellow like they are but its a pretty cool effect.
Without hesitation, the wolfman will pounce on the player characters, initiating a fight.
Marissa is focused on protecting Angeliah and reaching Kai so she wont get involved.
Davin is scared beyond belief, unable to do anything but blather and spit. All his bluster
and tough guy attitude fell right out of him. Dispatching the furred menace falls on the
cast.
This is a Combat Scene. The kids are facing off against a thing in a wolfman costume
called a Beggar. Part of a Beggars power is its ability to mimic whatever costume its
wearing. In this case, its the classic wolfman. Using the template at the back of this

12
Beggars Night
episode, this Wolfman Beggar will use its Costume Attack to claw and bite at the cast
and unleash its spine-chilling howl to induce Fear Checks.
The only thing to do here is fight. Trying to escape will cause the wolfman to give
chase. Like all Beggars, the wolfman wants to be real which isnt something the player
characters can readily give it (but, hey, if they can discern this is what the Beggar wants
and can finagle a way to give it to him, thats awesome).
Defeating the wolfman will cause its mask to fall off, revealing an oozing fanged maw
where a normal face should be. Turns out those glowing yellow eyes arent an effect. The
rest of its body will dissolve into a thick, noxious fog that causes everyone to gasp and gag
for a bit but will dissipate within a minute or two.
Scene #7
As was said, what they just fought was a Beggar, a creature from the spirit world that
lacks a true physical form, but it can kinda-sorta take the shape of a person. Actually,
more like a dagger-faced troglodyte, with sickly pale skin, red eyes, and stiff wisps of
pale hair. But their not-even-a-mother-could-love-it visage is not the only reason these
creatures dress up. When a Beggar dons a new look, its abilities changemeaning it can
alter its attack by altering how it looks. If its dressed like a wizard, it can shoot lightning
from its wand; with a heroic cape, it can leap tall buildings; or, in this case, it can claw and
bite like a werewolf (all of these function the same, with dice coming from the same Stuff;
they just look different).
Sometime during the confusion and bustle of the fight, Kai took off. Great. If one
of the characters specifically kept his or her eye on Kai and ran after him once he took
off, the cast member will run into Marvel Lady from the upcoming scene. Otherwise,
mention this after the fight is resolved.
This is a Dramatic Scene. A weirdness bomb has just exploded in the characters faces
and they should take a moment to let it all settle in. They should be so wrapped up in
discussion, they dont even notice the crowd of other kids slowly growing tighter around
them.
Scene #8
The problem with these creatures, well one of the problems, is that theyre dressed
up just like everyone else. This allows them to move within the crowd of costumed kids
without being detected. So when one of the Beggars latches onto a player character, it
should take everyone by surprise.
The player characters are standing there, probably deep in theory about what the hecks
going on and where Kai might be, when a girl in a superhero costume leaps on one of
them, biting down hard, possibly drawing blood. The cast has upset someone with all this
meddling and now its minions are on the hunt.
If anyone gets a good look at the creature, theyll see its a girl-type beast dressed up as
the lasso-spinning Amazonian superhero Marvel Lady. Once spotted, it will leap off and
run, trying to lead the kids away from the others.
The Beggar will probably pick a backyard or other currently unsupervised location, just
like the wolfman did. With everyones attention focused on front doors and sidewalks
and all the glass bottles some hoodlums have broken on the streetit wont be too hard.
Even the cops are distracted by all the shenanigans and are rounding up kids by the

13
campfire tales
groupful to interrogate them. If you feel the need to stall the group or inject an awkward
or potentially comedic moment into the session, have a patrolman call the kids over and
question them about the vandalism. Have they seen anybody strange? Seen anything
suspicious? Otherwise, just right back into them versus Marvel Lady.
This is a Combat Scene. After the brief rest Scene 7 gave them, its right back into the
action. The target is the Beggar dressed up as Marvel Lady. As the famed superheroine,
she packs a dynamite punch as well as a lasso it can use to temporarily bind opponents.
With the stage set, its up to the players to take her/it down.
When the Beggar is defeated, a bunch of other kidsor what the player characters
thought were kidswill turn and high-tail it out of there. If followed, theyll lead the
pursuing children to the Lawrence house on the corner, the one thats been on the market
for almost a year. The Beggars will rush around the back, shed their costumes in a heap by
the door, and disappear.
Any kids who witness this will see a light-colored smoke rise up from the crumpling
costume and rush through the back door that is slightly ajar.
Scene #9
The kids now know what happened to the other kids and even maybe where they are.
The next question is what can they do about it? Its time to enter the house.
This is an Investigation Scene. What the heck is in this house? Time for the characters
to find out.
Were dealing with three floors here: a basement, a ground level, and an upstairs. No
one lives here and the house has been professionally prepped for show by the real estate
agent multiple times so the place isnt just clean, its unnaturally immaculate. The rooms
are all stagedshowpiece furniture, fake flowers on the end tables, generic placeholder art
on the walls. Theres just enough stuff here so that it looks like someone could live here
while its obvious no one actually does.
The upstairs has three bedrooms and a bath. The main level has a kitchen, a dining
room, a foyer off the main entrance, and a living room. The basement is finished and has a
family room, wood-paneled game room, and a utility room at the back for a washer, dryer,
water heater, and all that.
The kids will find discarded costumes throughout the house, laying across stairs,
dropped into sinks, draped over curtain and shower rods, half-stuck in vents. Inspecting
the costumes reveals nothing strange. Some are homemade, most are store bought but
theyre pretty typical, if well-done, costumes. Bags of candy are also in the house but
are mostly undisturbed. Whatever these things are, it doesnt look like they are trying to
satisfy a sweet tooth.
As the group nears the basement, theyll hear squirming and muffled noises getting
louder and louderthose would be the kids piled up in the utility room. About twelve
kids total are in the roomout of costume and in a heavy dazeincluding Kai and
Angeliah. They cant speak beyond groans, have some superficial scrapes and are slightly
dirty, but are otherwise unharmed.
Finding the missing kids is the trigger event for the final scene: Meeting Mizzy.
Scene #10
The player characters will hear a soft ting at first, like someone winding up a jack-

14
Beggars Night
in-the-box really slowly. A rush of wind will blow through the rooms, lifting up all the
costumes that were spread throughout the house. If the kids split up, those not in the
basement will hear the ting and feel the wind as well. Following the suddenly-aloft
costume is a good way to get them downstairs for the finale.
Once clustered together, the costumes will bunch up into a vaguely humanoid shape,
stretching and twisting and knotting together until they take the form of a large, ugly
Halloween display gone horribly wrong.
This is Mizzy, the strange beast the Beggars form when theyre all bunched up together.
They all came from her and to her they have returned.
Mizzy is a seven-foot tall rag doll whose fabric-like flesh was stitched together out of
discarded costumes. Her face is one-half clear-plastic doctors face and one-half rubbery
glow-in-the-dark skull, sewn into one piece by what looks like shoestring. One hand is
a glove with thin knives extending from the fingertips while the other is an oversized
orange fist that shouts Sockem Time! or Dats All, Bub! in a thick Brooklyn accent
whenever it hits a hard surface. Half a threadbare red cape dangles off her back. A dirt-
caked tutu wraps around tights covered in a cartoony lizard print. Any part not covered
by costume is just a grey-green mottled mess with stiff fibrous hairs protruding from tears
and in between seams.
Mizzy stomps around, slightly dragging her left foot. Her lopsided form making her
movements at once terrifying and darkly comical. When she speaks, her voice is sickly-
sweet and echoes like a voice chip stuck inside an old tin toy. She welcomes the kids
by costume, not by name. (If any kid isnt in a costume anymore, she calls them almost
person.)
At first, shell try to shame the kids for entering the house without being invited. You
didnt ring the bell, shell say. Thats against the rules. If allowed, shell pace around the
kids, telling them Its a shame you didnt get here earlier. We had candy then. But now, a
big dramatic sigh, were all out. No treats for you. No treats for ANYBODY.
Then, unless the kids initiate it earlier, shell let out a melodious metal-tinged howl and
attack those who have invaded her home.
This is a Combat Scene. The target is Mizzy and the stakes are the kids passed out in
the basement.
This scene ends when Mizzy is defeated. The easy way is to fight, the hard way is to
give her what she wants. And what she wants, judging from what shell call out during
the fight, is to have the best costume ever. Shell mock the kids costumes, call them fat
or ugly or so cheap. So very, very cheap. If the cast can convince Mizzy she has the best
costume ever, she wont push the fight. Satisfied, shell just go away (though it will take a
whole lot of convincing to get her to believe they honestly think so).
However shes dispatched, through fists or flattery, shell burst into a thick cloud of
noxious gas. Her costume will fill up like a balloon, pushing her costume to its limit
and causing her to stumble around. Seams will rip and buttons will pop. The shoestring
holding her face together will snap, sending the halves of her mask flying. With a small
boom, the costumed monster will blow up with enough force to knock the weaker kids
onto their butts (but wont do any real damage). The gas she releases is pea-soup thick and
hard to breathe.

Scene #10
Now that Mizzy is taken care of, you might think the hard parts overbut the
kids arent in the clear yet. There are still a bunch of unconscious trick-or-treaters that
need awakened and escorted out of the house. Now that the Beggars are gone, the cast
can wake up the kids from the utility room enough so they can speak and ambulate
somewhat. The trick now is to get them out of the house.
This is a Spotlight Scene. The player characters have to get out of the house and get
the other children out as well. Its hard to move, hard to see, and plenty of kids will trip,
stumble, and fall as they try to make it up the stairs and out of the house.
Getting outside in tact is victory for now, though all the stolen kids will have a heck
of a time explaining to their parents what happened to their costumes. The cops are still
patrolling, trying to discover the mischief-makers responsible for the vandalism, trick-or-
treating is almost over, and the kids are thoroughly exhausted.
But maybe theres still enough time to see if that the place with the full-sized candy
bars has any left.

Because of that, it gains some wolfman-like abilities. This monster was built using the Beggar
