Agegroupsareaffecteddifferentlywhenstruckwithpovertyitsmostdevastatingeffectsareon
children,towhomitposesagreatthreat.Itaffectstheireducation,health,nutrition,andsecurity.It
alsonegativelyaffectstheemotionalandspiritualdevelopmentofchildrenthroughtheenvironment
itcreates.

Globally,1in9peopleareundernourished,thevastmajorityofthesepeopleliveindeveloping
countries
Agricultureisthesinglelargestemployerintheworld,providinglivelihoodsfor40percentoftodays
globalpopulation.Itisthelargestsourceofincomeandjobsforpoorruralhouseholds.Women
compriseonaverage43percentoftheagriculturallaborforceindevelopingcountries,andover50
percentinpartsofAsiaandAfrica,yettheyonlyown20%oftheland.
Poornutritioncausesnearlyhalf(45percent)ofdeathsinchildrenunderfive3.1millionchildren
eachyear.

Significantstrideshavebeenmadeinincreasinglifeexpectancyandreducingsomeofthecommon
killersassociatedwithchildandmaternalmortality,andmajorprogresshasbeenmadeon
increasingaccesstocleanwaterandsanitation,reducingmalaria,tuberculosis,polioandthe
spreadofHIV/AIDS.
However,onlyhalfofwomenindevelopingcountrieshavereceivedthehealthcaretheyneed,and
theneedforfamilyplanningisincreasingexponentially,whiletheneedmetisgrowingslowlymore
than225millionwomenhaveanunmetneedforcontraception.
Animportanttargetistosubstantiallyreducethenumberofdeathsandillnessesfrompollution
relateddiseases.

60percentofthemarewomen
