The Semantic Differences between Focus-Sensitive Operators Cai() and

Jiu() in Cataphoric Reference
JIANG Jing-zhong and WEI Hong-hua
(School of Liberal Arts, Hebei University, Baoding Hebei 071002, China)
Abstract: Within the theoretical framework of Alternative Semantics for focus, the article claims that the
semantic functions of Cai() are elucidating the hierarchical sequence as well as sanctioning focus and
other entailed items. Jiu() may be classified into Jiu()A and Jiu()B. The semantic function of Jiu()A
is equivalent to that of Cai(). Jiu()B and Zhi() have the same semantic function, that is, selecting the
focus and excluding other selections. Cai() and Jiu() have semantic differences in cataphoric reference
owing to the polysemous nature of Jiu() and the position of focus.
Key words: Focus-sensitive operators; Cai(); Jiu(); Cataphoric reference; Semantic difference
