Prova Explanation Guide

Make sure the student can hear and see you well. Use simple English, avoid Passive Voice
and long sentences.Use synonyms when explaining the Method, mime as much as possible
and give simple, clear examples. The following is just a suggestion of how to explain the
Method, but make sure to cover all the points and utter the sentences in green.

Part 1a - Icebreaker

Use the icebreaker to sound the student out. Asking questions with the milestones will
save you time.
My names I will be your tutor for this lesson.
I am happy to meet you. We know the Callan Method really works and it will help you
improve your English, so you can get a better job, communicate easily when you travel,
meet new people, etc. Over 1 million people have learnt to speak English with this Method
and you are going to succeed, too!

Well do three things today. (1) First I want you to tell me something about yourself and I will
tell you about Callan Online. (2) Then, I will check your level (3) Finally, well have a short
demonstration lesson.
- Whats your name? Where do you live? Why do you want to improve your English? How
long have you been studying English? If you could speak English very well, what would you
do? etc.

Part 1b - About Callan Online
SPEAKING, NOT CONVERSATION
With Callan Online you improve very fast by speaking a lot. Its not a conversation, we
follow a book with all the grammar, vocabulary and expressions given in a carefully
designed structure.
Its all very simple. (All you need for your lesson is a book or an eBook and a lot of water,
because you will speak all the time.)
THE PRINCIPLES
The three principles of the Method are: speed, repetition and correction.
(1) SPEAKING WITHOUT TRANSLATING
In a lesson we speak very fast, so that you get used to/accustomed/familiar with everyday
English. It's natural to speak quickly - you must learn to understand natural English You
have no time to think in your own language. You can't stop and think about grammar - you
learn to speak as a reflex. You will understand TV, radio, people when you travel abroad, go
for a job interview, etc. You will be able to communicate fluently and with confidence. There
are no boring exercises, just speaking, speaking and speaking.
(2) REPETITION
We repeat all vocabulary and expressions many times, so that you remember better. If you
repeat a lot, you will learn to speak without translating. You will answer automatically,
without thinking.
(3) CORRECTION
Every time you make a mistake we will correct you. It helps you improve your English. You
become more confident, your pronunciation improves and you speak correctly.
FLEXIBILITY AND CONVENIENCE
With Callan Online you can study at any time. You select the tutors and days you like.
Lessons last 25 minutes, they are fast, fun and dynamic. We speak all the time, do a short

Part 2 - Level test
Now, I will ask you a few question to see what your level is. Please remember to (1) give
me long answers. For example, if I ask you: Is this a pen? you need to say: No, it isnt a
pen, its a pencil (2) use the contraction. For example: its, dont, wont, etc.

Always start the level test by asking the first questions as a warm-up. Move quickly through
lower stages, if the student seems confident. Keep in mind what you have learned about
their level breaking the ice.
Congratulate them on their level and assure they will receive an email with the results after
the lesson. Remind them, we are not checking their knowledge, but rather the fluency.

Part 3 First lesson
Finally, start the first lesson, remind them the rules, miming and giving examples.
Ok, now lets get started on our first lesson!
BOOK
I will ask questions from a book - each question practises a particular word/piece of
grammar - you answer the question, but it is not conversation.
CONSISTENCY
We record your progress on our system, so that every tutor knows where to start a lesson
when you book them.
QUESTION TWICE
I will says each question twice, you may not understand 1st time
NEGATIVE POSITIVE
Answer with a negative part and then a positive part, you practise negative/positive verb
forms - you practise opposites
CONTRACTIONS
Remember to use the contractions - it's natural to use them
LONG ANSWER
Your answer must be long and use the same structure as the question - you practise the
words and grammar from the question - you practise speaking a lot
CORRECTION
I will correct every mistake at the moment you make it - there is a lot of correction - very
different from other schools - you learn from the correction of mistakes. For example: if you
say: He speak, I will say: Not he speak, he speaks.
PRACTICE Dont simply copy the teacher - you should always try to say the sentences
without waiting for help - ideally, you and the teacher speak at the same time.

PROMPT will give you the beginning of the answer to help you start to speak immediately -
stops you from translating
FEED I will say the answer with you, at the same time as you, to help you speak without
translating

Ask most questions at a lower level.

Aim to ask at least three questions from a higher level and teach the vocabulary, if
necessary.
