2017 Oxford Summer Basketball League

Welcome to the 2017 Oxford summer basketball league! We are located behind the Oxford
Community Center where we are lucky enough to have two full sized courts where we will be
able to teach the proper fundamentals of basketball to young children as well as build on the
skills of older participants in the league. There will be full court games run each week at a
designated time for certain age groups with established teams and coaches. Parents are
encouraged to stay and watch but if you cannot then please try to show up fifteen minutes before
the games are over to pick up your child.
Below the basic rules and model of the league:

Time Mondays Wednesdays

530-645 Girls Ages 7-14 Boys Ages 6-8
645-8 Boys Ages 9-11 Boys Ages 12-14
The age groups are purposely established like this so coaches can build the skills of each player
on each team and not have to worry about a large difference in skill. Based on this practices and
games are run differently to go smooth and have the highest amount of development.

Younger Children: Boys 6-8 and Girls 7-9

At these ages the main purpose of the league is to build basic skills and fundamentals in the
children. Here we will be doing basic shooting, dribbling, passing, and defensive drills so the
children can get a general platform for the game of basketball. When it comes to the actual
games they are meant to have fun and enjoy the game but at the same time practice the skills
they learn while being in the league. They are here to get the basics and have a good time!
First 45min- A practice will be held by the coach in charge of the team
Last 30min- A game will be conducted with two 10min halves

Older Children: Boys 9-14 and Girls 10-14

Most likely at this age your child has played basketball and if not that is okay. These age groups
will be more intense and they will be taught more complex skills where they can build on the
game they already possess. The practices will be shorter so the length of the weekly games can
be extended. This will be a fun and enjoyable atmosphere where kids can learn the skills they
want to learn and showcase the skills they already have!
First 30min- A practice will be held by the coach in charge of the team
Last 45min- A game will be conducted with two 20min halves
Staff of the league
Parents are encouraged to volunteer to coach, referee, and score keep if possible but we
understand most of you are there to watch your child get better so that is why we have a number
of staff members there at all times. The more people we have helping out the more smoothly the
league will be run! Remember these staff members are ALL volunteers spending their time and
effort to make your child have an enjoyable and fun atmosphere here at Oxford.

Rules of the League

Boys ages 6-8 and Girls ages 7-9
The basic rules of basketball will be enforced to a certain extent. We know that some
children have never played before and are learning the game so double dribbles, carries,
and other common dribbling mistakes will be watched and discussed with the players but
they may not always be called in game.
There will be a running clock to keep the game going so we can get the children out
at the proper time and not keep the good parents waiting.
Coaches will sub the players as accordingly and make sure all the kids get to participate
in the game.
The players will learn man to man defense as well as zone defense from their respected
coaches.
Any child that brings the ball up the court must pass the mid court line before a
defender can initiate contact with the ball handler.
If an injury occurs the game will be stopped.
If a player is bleeding they must leave the game and report to the sideline and when the
injury is cleaned and/or bandaged the player may then return.
Foul language will not be tolerated.
Technical fouls will be given to the proper coaches or players.
If parents are not acting in a respectful manner or using abusive language they will
be asked to leave the area until pickup. This also includes taunting, threatening,
menacing, fighting, etc. Coaches and parents are encouraged to prevent incidents
such as this.
Two 10min halves with each coach having two 30sec time outs per half.
Halftime will not exceed 3min in length.
At the end of regulation time if the game is tied there will be a 4min overtime.

League Structure
This is a four-week regular season games going from (6/26-7/19)
The fifth week will consist of an all-star break where coaches will pick three players to represent
their team in an all-star game. There will also be a 3-point contest as well as a timed skills
competition. Kids not chosen are still asked to come and we can do the same structure on the
other court so everyone can participate and have a good time. (7/26)
Then there will be a one week playoff. (8/2)
For Boys and Girls ages 6-10 there will also be a morning skills and drills clinic where your
child can come and build on their mechanics and learn new skills to add to their game. It
will run from 9am-11am every Monday and Thursday (7/10-8/4)

Any complaints should be submitted via email or paper to Lisa Hitchings who will follow up and
bring the issue to the program coordinator.
