STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Born and brought up in an environment wherein family business dealt with heavy electrical
machinery such as generators, mechanical presses, boilers, motors, oil expellers always used to
fascinate me and wonder about mechanics of it and thus developed propensity towards
Engineering. Applying basic electrical principles and using simple techniques, from repairing
electrical appliances to hacking ways of solving simple household needs such as cupboard
security or a theft alarm, and exploiting renewable energy resources such as wind and water at
our farm, I had always indulged myself in exploring the design and mechanics of electrical
devices and experimenting ways of improving the power generation and efficiency.

I observed a very visible contrast between technology, energy generation, efficiencies between
developed nations and India and aimed to resolve it. I wanted to leverage my passion, natural
instincts and convert my alacrity towards technology into practical means, by getting the right
direction and was encouraged to opt for Electrical Engineering in my under graduation by
joining a good university.

Competing with and ranking among the top 3% of almost a million students in one of the
toughest competitive exams for Engineering in India, I procured admission in one of the most
reputed engineering colleges of India. This was a wonderful period of my life. I made great
friends, learnt from the best faculty, gained valuable knowledge, participated in many
extracurricular activities and worked for the community. I learnt various subjects like power
electronics, microcontrollers, microprocessor, power systems and control system and applied
those towards practical implementations like designing and preparing tube light choke coil
including testing, designing and construction of 24VA transformer, designing power circuits like
controlling lamp using contractor, direct on-line starter, star delta starter, wiring of 36 slots, 3
phase, 6 poles synchronous motor.

In my six months industrial training at ISGEC Heavy Engineering Limited, I developed my skills
in PLC Coding and electrical circuit designing of Mechanical presses. In exploration of energy
saving technologies, I did my major project on Variable frequency drive which further helped me
in my professional job at Mitsubishi Electric which uses frequency modulation in their VRF
(Variable refrigerant flow) air conditioners.

Graduated with a first class degree, I started my career at Mitsubishi Electric India as Engineer
Project Sales. I found this role particularly motivating as this designation required me to go
beyond my comfort zone and understand the complexities of a successfully run organization.
This job helped me hone my communication, presentation and designing skills. Due to my
technical edge and prior experience, I was competent to explain energy efficient technology of
variable refrigerant flow air conditioners to my clients.

With time, my desire to understand and improvise on electrical engineering concepts, principles
and design has increased, for which I need to pursue my education further and hence applying
for Masters in Electrical Engineering. I would be keen to study at your prestigious university for
the enriching ecosystem, excellent faculty, multicultural backgrounds of fellow students and
state of the art facilities and Im certain about putting my best foot forward by studying hard,
participating and contributing at various levels during my course.

I strongly believe that energy needs can be fulfilled through renewable means. Along with
innovations in energy generation, a lot more work needs to be done on increasing efficiency. In
India there are maximum transmission losses; a small percentage of improvements in efficiencies
can result in better power utilization and also enormous reduction in carbon emissions. I studied
some possible alternatives to improve the efficiency of power plants which also reduces the
overall production of hazardous fossil fuel wastes and wrote a review research paper on
Magnetic Hydro Dynamics Power Generation Techniques published in International Journal of
Computing and Corporate Research, September 2015 edition.

Post my Masters, I would like to work for an organization involved in renewable energy and find
solutions to worlds leading issues related to energy and sustainability. As my long term goal, I
would work towards finding solutions to worlds leading issues related to energy and
sustainability. This is also in line with the vision of our Nation leaders who have set the goal to
generate 175 GW of power through renewable source of energy in India by 2022 and similarly
USA Presidents Obama clean power plan to cut down the carbon emissions.

The major in Electrical engineering Energy and Power system and the research area it includes
would give me complete knowledge and would help me to understand the intricacies of the
subject. I would love to be part of Research centers like Energy systems innovation center and
Power Systems Engineering Research Centre. I believe WSU promises an intensive graduate
program and will help me to achieve the goals of my life. Im positive that if my application is
accepted, I would prove to be an asset and establish a mutually beneficial relationship with
students, faculty and administration.
