Question 4
After his wife passes on, Pak Ali moved in with son, Samad, daughter in law
and their four-year-old son. Pak Ali loved his grandson very much and spent all his
time with him, especially when the boys parents went off to work.
They family made it a point to get together for dinner every night. Being very
old, Pak Ali had a poor eyesight and unsteady hands. So eating become a chore.
He dropped hid food and spilled his milk all over the table and floor. He even broke
some of the plates and glasses. Samad and his wife became irritated with the mess
the old made. They also scolded him for being careless.
The next day, they set up a small table in a corner and made the old man eat
there from a wooden bowl. Meanwhile, they continued eating at the dinner table.
The little boy looked at his grandfather and saw him crying. He walked up to him,
wiped away the old mans tears and said Dont cry grandpa. One evening, Samad
and his wife noticed their son playing with little pieces of wooden. What are you
doing? they asked him. The little boy responded, Oh, Im making wooden bowl for
you and mama to eat your food from when youre old.
Samad and his wife were speechless. They were shocked and realised how
cruel they had been to the old man. That evening, they held Pak Alis and led him
back to the dinner table. From that day onwards, he ate every meal with the family.
And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a
fork was dropped or milk spilled.
Children are remarkably smart, being role models to their children, parents
