CALDIESEL GREEN PLANT: GREEN DIESEL PRODUCTION FORM

NYAMPLUNG (Calophyllum inophyllum L.) USING

HYDRODEOXYGENATION PROCESS INTEGRATED WITH OIL
REFINERY UNIT
Team Number: PD37

ABSTRACT
Indonesia is susceptible for facing fuel deficit significantly because of the
stagnant production of fossil fuel from Indonesia refinery. Based on diesel deficit
up to 35 million kiloliters in 2025, production of drop-in diesel (green diesel) is the
better choice to substitute petroleum diesel.
The CalDiesel Green Plant use Nyamplung (Calophyllum inophyllum) as the
main feedstock without food competitiveness with fuel and environmental
problems like palm oil plantation. Nyamplung is more economical as raw material
compared to other non-edible stocks due to its high oil content and productivity
comparable to palm oil.
The plant area will be located at Bontang, East Kalimantan with the annual
capacity of 1 million kiloliters. This plant has long-term viability in feedstock
aspect with estimated Nyamplung plantation area for about 350,000 ha at
Sangkimah, East Kutai.
The CalDiesel Green Plant use hydroprocessing technology with innovation
at yielding high selectivity to hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). Selectivity of HDO is
the main consideration in order to suppress the side reaction which leads to less
hydrogen consumption and low acid gas product. High selectivity of HDO can be
obtained from the choice of sulfided NiMo-based catalyst, mild operating
condition, and applying hydrogen recycle process. Propane as by-product is used
as utility system for maintain the energy efficiency. This plant is integrated with
Bontang Oil Refinery which is planned to be operational by 2022 for providing
hydrogen.
Acting as center of green diesel producer from non-edible stock in Asia, the
CalDiesel Green Plant is not only technically feasible due to its strategic location
between feedstocks, hydrogen source, and target market, but also economically
feasible which is supported by Gross Profit Margin for about 40%. The CalDiesel
Green Plant will be the strategic solution to reduce Indonesias reliance on diesel
import through utilization of sustainable feedstock and integration with existing oil
refinery.
