few others can boast. Levine is an avid Irish Dancer.
Levine has been Irish Dancing for the past eight years. Although the activity is
rather original, she did not generate the idea herself. Levine’s mother had been an
Irish Dancer for several years prior, and taught Irish Dance herself. It was some
time before Levine began dancing, but once she started, she did not stop. “We went
and tried it out, and I stuck with it,” said Levine.
Irish Dance is a large time commitment for Levine, who participates in various
events throughout the year. For example, she participates in annual Irish Dance
competitions with her team. “We travel around a lot and do different things. One
of the cool things was that we went to the Irish festival at Seattle Center and got to
dance at the big stage there,” said Levine. Levine practices with her group every
Friday.
It was at the Seattle competition, also known as the Feis, that Levine completed
her greatest Irish Dance accomplishment. “It was probably my second Feis…, I got
a first place trophy, and it was so cool,” said Levine.
To Levine, Irish Dance is more than a sport; the team is like an extended family.
“My Irish Dancing friends are some of my strongest connections. It’s like a family.
It’s great. There’ve been a lot of people who have come and dropped out, but the
people who have stuck with it, we’re all really close,” said Levine.
Out of the dance studio, Levine maintains a very active schedule as well. She par-
ticipates in Drama Club, and had a leading role in last year’s performance Noises
Off. According to Levine, Drama has had some hidden benefits for her. “It’s neat,
because with drama, it’s also helping me with Irish Dancing. I’m kind of learning
how I can make eye contact with the audience,” said Levine.
Although dancing seems to come easy to Levine, she faces her problems just like
everyone else. “For me, it’s picking up the hornpipe steps, since it’s really weird
