Action oriented insights

Named after the street location in the Mission District of San Francisco, 826 Valencia was founded in
2002 by educator Nnive Calegari and author Dave Eggers whoidenti ed the need to support under-
served youth by providing tools and resources required for a successful learning in school and beyond.
Moreover, they set the goal tosupport overburdened teachers and connect talented working adults
with students who could help close their achievement gap in school. The founders had to open a store
as the selected space was de ned as a retail zone. The idea to open a hot dog stand was discarded
quickly and the founders decided to open a pirate store instead. The store sells pirate supplies in order
to nance the free programs of the writing-tutoring center of 826 Valencia and in classrooms all over
San Francisco. Customers can buy T-shirts, articles for diversion, posters, or books among other things.

The founders attached a writing lab to the store and designed it as a place where kids would like to
play and be productive. Therefore, they provided a cozy reading tent, big work tables, and a great
variety of books. The range of programs was extended by growing partnerships with teachers, writing
professionals as well as relationships with neighborhood families.
