1 FADE IN: INT.

MENTAL HOSPITAL - NIGHT 1

Loud banging is heard. The camera pans to show KALEB, a 17
year old, aspiring, talented actor, an all-around nice guy,
but something snaps and he beings to lose his mind, we see
him banging against the walls of a mental hospital, hes
screaming, hysterical.
KALEB
I DONT BELONG HERE. I SHOULDNT BE
IN HERE. YOU GUYS HAVE NO IDEA WHAT
YOURE DOING.
Kaleb continues to throw himself around this empty room. The
harsh, bright light blinding him as he stumbles to and from
the four walls surrounding him.

KALEB (CONT.)
DO YOU GUYS HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I AM?
Kaleb freezes, and turns, taking on a new persona of one of
his characters.

KALEB (CONT.)
Audrey, is that you? What are you
doing here? Did Twoey tell you to
come here? I told that stupid plant
to shut up... Shut up, Twoey...
Shut up! Shut up! SHUT UP! SHUT UP!
SHUT UP! SHUT -
2 CUT TO: INT. KMC ONSTAGE - NIGHT 2
Kaleb is seen on stage at KMC Onstage, playing the role of
Seymour Krelborn, taking place months before the scene just
shown. He is screaming at this giant plant, his character
losing it.
KALEB (CONT.)
UP! SHUT UP!

The scene continues, Kaleb moves upstage and downstage,

continuing the show, as the audio begins to fade, and an
upbeat backtrack begins to play underneath the scene.
3 CUT TO: EXT. STAGE DOOR AT KMC ONSTAGE - NIGHT 3

A group of people await outside the door. The door opens and
Kaleb is seen walking out of it, creating excitement and
movement among the group of people, PERSON 1, PERSON 2,
PERSON 3 surround Kaleb.

Amazing show tonight!

You killed it!

PERSON 3
You were phenomenal!
Kaleb thanks the group of people, and moves towards a
smaller group of people just right of the previous one. This
group consists of Kalebs friends, RYAN, a sarcastic, rude,
petty friend of Kaleb, and STEPHEN, who does really like
Kaleb, but is not very good at showing it and often sides
with Ryan, along with his crush, SARAH, a sweet, pretty
girl, who has a crush on Kaleb as well, but has no idea how
to express it.

RYAN
Wow. You sucked.
KALEB
Thanks, Ryan.

Kaleb shyly turns towards Sarah, and takes a step toward

her. Shes speechless, and slowly extends her arms, a hint
of hesitation behind it, but only because shes worried he
wont accept, she decides to open her arms and embraces
Kaleb in a hug.

SARAH
You did absolutely amazing.
KALEB
Thank you so much. It means a lot
that you -
Stephen steps in between the blossoming couple, obviously
not wanting to see any more of this budding romance.

STEPHEN
Thats great. Im hungry, lets go.
Kaleb smiles shyly at Sarah, and walks to Stephens car.
They get in the car, Stephen and Ryan in the front seat,
Sarah and Kaleb in the backseat.

RYAN
So where do you guys feel like
eating?

SARAH
We should let Kaleb pick! He just
put on an amazing performance.
KALEB
Thats alright! You could pick if
youd like, Sarah.
SARAH
Oh, no, thats alright. Really,
Kaleb, you should pick! You just
blew us all away.
KALEB
Awh, thank you, but it really
doesnt matter to me! You can pick!

SARAH
No, I insist! Please, Kaleb, pick!
KALEB
Im serious, wherever is fine with
me!

SARAH
Are you sure? Because you really
just did so amazi-
Sarah is cut off by an annoyed Ryan. Ryan turns around to
face Kaleb and Sarah.
RYAN
BOTH OF YOU JUST SHUT UP. Sarah,
pick a place to eat or I will have
Stephen crash this car.

Ryan turns back around and starts to slam his head into the
back of the seat in frustration.
SARAH
Uhh, we could go to Kullmanns?
KALEB
That sounds good! I love the
milkshakes the-

Kaleb freezes, and turns and looks out the window. At this
point, they are already driving, and Kaleb is frantically
trying to open the door.
KALEB (CONT.)
AUDREY? NO! GET OFFA HER! GET OFFA
HER! NO! AUDREY! STOP! AUDREY!

During all of this Stephen swerves the car, suddenly

frightened by all of the yelling. Kaleb is slamming on the
window, hysterical and in tears. A frightened Sarah and Ryan
look on at this. Sarah has her hand resting on Kalebs
shoulder in concern.
STEPHEN
Kaleb! Stop screaming! You almost
killed us!

SARAH
Stephen, stop screaming at him!
Stephen scoffs at Sarahs remark, and pulls the car over.
Despite nearly having a heart attack over Kalebs explosion,
he is concerned for him.
4 EXT. SIDE OF AUTOBAHN - NIGHT 4
The group of friends all lean against the car, Ryan is bent
over near the passengers seat, his arms clasped and resting
on the roof of the car, head down. Stephen stands near the
drivers door, his arms folded and his side resting against
the car, facing Sarah and Kaleb. Sarah has her hands on
Kalebs shoulders. They all look exhausted, Kaleb more than
any of them.

KALEB
Im fine, I promise! I dont know
what came over me. Im just really
tired.

SARAH
Are you sure, Kaleb? You scared us
all pretty badly, Stephen nearly
crashed the car.
Stephen rolls his eyes, obviously bored at the conversation.

KALEB
I know. Im fine, I promise.
RYAN
The kid said hes fine. Im tired,
lets go.
SARAH
Shut up, Ryan.
KALEB
No, no. Ryan has a point. Im fine.
The three friends all stare at Kaleb, an unsure look on all
of their faces. Kaleb notices this.

KALEB (CONT.)
I promise! Can we please just go?
Sarah raises her eyebrows at Stephen, it was his car after
all, and Stephen shrugs his shoulders, clearly having no
idea what to do about the whole situation.

STEPHEN
Lets go, its been a long night,
and we all have school in the
morning.

The group opens the doors to the car, Sarah still looks
unsettled about Kalebs little episode, but seems content
enough. We see Kaleb closing his door, and just before it
shuts -

5 CUT TO: EXT. OUTSIDE OF HIGH SCHOOL - MORNING 5

We see Kalebs door finish shutting, the same group of kids
are outside their high school, in the same seating of the
car they were before, Stephen driving, Ryan in the passenger
seat, Kaleb behind the drivers seat, and Sarah to the right
of him. They all step out of the car, Ryan, Sarah, and
Stephen all look refreshed, but Kaleb still looks like a
mess.
STEPHEN
Did you get enough sleep last
night, Kaleb?
KALEB
Oh, yeah, yeah. That show just took
a lot out of me, yknow?

Kaleb laughs to dismiss Stephens question, obviously having

lied. Kaleb had gotten plenty of sleep the night before.
SARAH
I sure can tell, you look like a
mess.
Sarah immediately realizes what she just said, and Kaleb
stands awkwardly. They both are embarrassed.
KALEB
Look, I should head to class. Ill
see you guys at lunch. Maybe.
An awkward silence consumes the group, a feeling unfamiliar
to all of them. Between all of these lifelong friends in
this infamous group, something major has happened, changing
the course of the friendships, none of them know quite what

it is, but the looks on their faces demonstrate their

confusion and concern.
KALEB
Ill, uh, Ill catch up with you
guys later.

Kaleb turns to leave the group, the other three staring, in

obvious unease and discomfort due to Kalebs odd behavior,
when Sarah steps forward, putting a hand on Kalebs turned
back.

SARAH
Are you sure youre okay, Kaleb?
Kaleb shakes off her friendly gesture, and keeps his back
turned from the group.

KALEB
Im fine. (beat)
Kaleb shudders, making his pale, sick complexion even more
worrying to see.

KALEB
I gotta go.
Kaleb rushes off. Leaving Sarah in the same position she was
in. She takes a few steps forward as if debating whether or
not to go after him, but sighs, and joins Ryan and Stephen,
still facing the direction Kaleb ran off in.
RYAN
Theres no way that kids not on
something.

SARAH
Shut up, Ryan.
Sarah turns around, facing Ryan, and with every sentence,
takes a step forward until shes directly in his face.

SARAH (CONT.)
Somethings obviously wrong with
him, I mean look at him. Hes the
palest Ive ever seen him, figuring
he was also the tannest Id ever
seen him only last night, and the
bags under his eyes are bigger than
your ego.

STEPHEN
Shes right. This is the worst
weve ever seen him. I just dont
get it. He was perfectly fine last
night after his show.

RYAN
Look, the bells about to ring, and
I cannot be late to class again.
One more tardy and Ill get
suspended. Ill see you guys at
lunch.
Stephen and Sarah exchange glances while Ryan rushes off.
Sarah and Stephen stand awkwardly, their faces giving the
impression that neither of them have any idea what to do.

STEPHEN
Ill see you later, then.
SARAH
Yep.

Sarah watches as Stephen walks off, before eventually

sighing and turning in a different direction towards a
different part of the school building.
6 INT. SCHOOL CLASSROOM - MIDDAY 6

We see Ryan entering the crowded classroom, with Stephen

sitting in the second row back, waving him over. Ryan walks
to Stephen and sits down, they talk while both unpacking
their backpacks.

STEPHEN
Any sign of Kaleb?
RYAN
Nope. I wouldnt be surprised if
that boy managed to injure himself
by now in the state hes in.
STEPHEN
Ryan!
RYAN
Sorry. But, no, I havent.
Right as Ryan finishes his sentence, a dazed Kaleb stumbles
into the classroom, obviously in a worse condition than he
was before.

RYAN
Oh my God- Kaleb! Hey! Whats wro-
STEPHEN
Ryan! Shut up! He clearly is in no
shape to be getting yelled at right
now.
The teacher, MR. TODD, enters the classroom, he passes Kaleb
who is stood in the middle of the classroom, looking around
as if he were being followed and didnt want to get caught.

MR. TODD
Alright, class. If you guys
remembered, your presentations on
World War II are due today, do we
have any volunteers to go first?

Mr. Todd notices Kaleb still standing in the middle of the

classroom.
MR. TODD (CONT.)
Ah, Kaleb! Perfect, thank you for
volunteering first. Ill pull up
your presentation on the Smartboard
while you prepare yourself. Do you
have it shared with me?
Kalebs head snaps to the side, he stares at Mr. Todd, and
then looks back towards the class, who is staring at him,
some laughing, some concerned, some not even paying
attention to the teenager going mentally insane right in
front of their eyes.
MR. TODD
Kaleb, are you alright?
KALEB
I- I cant.

Ryan leads over to Stephen.

RYAN
Whoa, whats wrong with him?
STEPHEN
If I knew, do you think Id be
letting him embarrass himself in
front of the entire class?
RYAN
Whatever.

STEPHEN
We need to do something.
RYAN
What do you mean? He looks like
hell punch whoever goes near him
in the throat.
MR. TODD
Kaleb, do you need to see the
nurse? You dont look so well.

KALEB
I- I- I cant. No, no, no, no, no,
I cant.
Kaleb begins to pace the front of the classroom, while Mr.
Todd takes a few step forward him. The class begins to
murmur, and Mr. Todd dismisses them, and immediately goes
back to focusing on Kaleb.
MR. TODD
What do you mean? Of course you
can.
STEPHEN
Oh my God.
RYAN
What?
STEPHEN
I think hes going to have another
episode.

RYAN
What? Like he did last night?
STEPHEN
Yea-

At this point, Mr. Todd is face to face with Kaleb, trying

to calm him down. He makes the mistake of putting his hands
on Kalebs shoulder, the final straw, sending him into
another one of his episodes.

KALEB
GET OFF OF ME, LET GO, LET GO, LET
GO!
Kaleb continues to scream, and begins to have a fit,
throwing his body all over the classroom. He continues to do
this and his classmates watch in shock and in terror as they

watch this guy they once knew to be nice completely lose his
mind. He ends all of this by sinking to his knees, rocking
back and forth, his head in his hands.
MR. TODD
Call an ambulance.
Stephen and Ryan stand, as the commotion in the classroom
intensifies, and they make their way toward Kaleb. Ryan
pulls out his phone and dials 112.

KALEB
No, no, no, no, no, no.
Stephen kneels in front of Kaleb and puts a hand on his
shoulder.

KALEB
DONT TOUCH ME! GET OFF! GET OFF OF
ME! WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE? WHERE I AM?
I JUST WANT TO GO HOME. GET OFF OF
ME. JUST LEAVE ME ALONE. NO, NO,
NO, NO, NO.

We see tears in Stephens eyes, as watching his lifelong

friend lose his mind has broken his heart.
RYAN
Theyre on their way now. They
should be here any minute.
Stephen nods and turns his attention back to Kaleb.
STEPHEN
Kaleb, Kaleb, buddy, its me,
Kaleb. Dont you remember?
KALEB
I dont know who any of you people
are. I dont know where I am. I
just want to go home. LET ME GO!
LET ME GO! LET ME GO!
Kalebs yelling scares Stephen and forces him to stand. Ryan
walks over to Stephen, and then takes a step towards Kaleb.

MR. TODD
Boys. Dont.
Mr. Todd has a few tears in his own eyes.

MR. TODD
Class, if you all could please
leave. Just go to the gym or
something. I need to take care of
this.

The class all stands, murmuring among themselves. Mr. Tood,

Ryan, and Stephen stand around the boy they once knew to be
perfect, the one they assumed was going places when he was
older, now shattered, and broken, rocking back and forth on
the floor, and none of them had any idea as to why.
Footsteps are heard approaching.
MR. TODD
That must be the paramedics. You
boys stay with him. Ill be right
back.

Ryan and Stephen crouch around the crying Kaleb.

RYAN
Oh, Kaleb... What happened to you?

Kaleb looks up at Ryan, he looks confused, almost as if hes

wondering where hes seen this kid before, for a second, it
seems like hes remembered his friends, but that moment
quickly fades, and he returns his head back to his knees.
RYAN
Kaleb-
Ryan chokes up, and we see tears streaming down his face.
Stephen walks around him and puts his arms around him, and
the camera pans away, as we see the once three best friends,
Kaleb sitting still in the front of the classroom, broken,
while we watch Stephen and Ryan clutch to each other,
holding back their tears from the traumatizing sight of
seeing their best friend go insane. We watch this for a few
seconds, before Mr. Todd returns with PARAMEDIC 1 and
PARAMEDIC 2.

PARAMEDIC 1
Oh boy, look at this one.
PARAMEDIC 2
He doesnt look like hell be
getting better anytime soon.
Ryan and Stephens heads fling upwards towards the
paramedics, a terrified, traumatized look upon their faces.
Paramedic 1 gives Paramedic 2 a look of, "Oops, did I really
just say that out out?"

PARAMEDIC 1
Lets load him up.

We see the paramedics cross over to Kaleb, who is staring at

them with wide eyes. He begins to use his hands to attempt
to crawl away from them, but its useless. We see the
paramedics grab him by his arms, and we hear Kaleb
screaming.

Cut to:
7 INT. MENTAL HOSPITAL, WAITING ROOM - EVENING 7
We see DR. SCRIVELLO, standing in front of MR. EAST, and
MRS. EAST, the two parents of Kaleb who are so busy they
never seem to have had time for him, a frightened Ryan and
Stephen behind them.
DR. SCRIVELLO
Im afraid that Kaleb is not
allowed visitors at the moment.

Mrs. East takes a step toward Dr. Scrivello, pointing a

finger in his face, visibly upset.
MRS. EAST
Well, why not? Why arent I allowed
to see my son?
DR. SCRIVELLO
Im afraid - Im afraid he isnt in
a very stable mental state right
now.
CUT TO:
8 INT. MENTAL HOSPITAL, WHITE ROOM - EVENING 8

The past catches up with the present, and we see Kaleb

standing in the middle of the room, screaming.
CUT TO:
9 INT. MENTAL HOSPITAL, WAITING ROOM - EVENING 9

Mr. East grabs his wifes shoulders, and pulls her away from
Dr. Scrivello.
MR. EAST
Well, do you have any idea of when
well be able to?
Stephen pushes past Ryan and gets in Dr. Scrivellos face.
He has tears in his eyes, but hes clearly frustrated.

STEPHEN
This isnt fair. We should be
allowed to see him.
DR. SCRIVELLO
I know that you want to see him,
boys, but I cant let anyone in
there-
Ryan shoves Stephen and stands inches away from Dr.
Scrivellos face, screaming.

RYAN
TAKE US IN THERE RIGHT NOW. MY BEST
FRIEND IS IN SOME WHITE ROOM,
ALONE, SCARED, OBVIOUSLY SOMETHING
IS VERY WRONG WITH HIM, AND I NEVER
EVEN NOTICED. IM AN AWFUL FRIEND
AND AN AWFUL PERSON. THE LEAST I
CAN DO IS GO IN THERE AND SEE HIM.
Mr. and Mrs. East pull Ryan away from Dr. Scrivello. Ryan
begins to cry, and Mr. and Mrs. East embrace him and
Stephen. Dr. Scrivello stands and stares at the odd group,
before finally speaking.
DR. SCRIVELLO
Fine. You may not go in the room
with him, but I can take you to the
one-way glass. You can see him but
he cant see you. Follow me and be
quiet.
We see the group leaving the waiting room, following Dr.
Scrivello to a door.
10 INT. MENTAL HOSPITAL - ONE WAY WINDOW TO WHITE ROOM 10
The group stares through the one-way glass, staring at Kaleb
going ballistic before them.

KALEB
I DONT BELONG HERE. I SHOULDNT BE
IN HERE. YOU GUYS HAVE NO IDEA WHAT
YOURE DOING.

Kaleb collapses in the middle of the room. Mr. East puts his
arms around his wife, Ryan, and Stephen.
RYAN
What do you think happened?

DR. SCRIVELLO
Well, we have no real diagnosis
yet. Our paramedics considered it
may be dissociative identity
disorder, or DID.

STEPHEN
What?
RYAN
Multiple personality disorder...
But, we never noticed anything
before.
DR. SCRIVELLO
Thats what makes me question it,
too. He showed no signs of it
before, according to what you two,
put in his records.
Dr. Scrivello gestures towards Mr. and Mrs. East. Mrs. East
begins to breakdown.

MRS. EAST
He showed no signs of this before.
What happened to my little boy?
DR. SCRIVELLO
I wish I could answer that question
right now, Mrs. East, although some
other doctors just ran some brain
tests on him.
We hear a door open and DOCTOR 2 enter.

DOCTOR 2
Oh, hello. Here are the results
from the tests, Dr. Scrivello.
Doctor 2 turns towards Kalebs group of visitors.

DOCTOR 2
Im sorry so sorry about Kaleb, it
looks like hell be here in a
while, figuring -

MRS. EAST
Wait, whats he talking about?
DR. SCRIVELLO
Why dont you move along, Doctor?
You just handed over the test
results, they havent seem them

DR. SCRIVELLO (contd)

yet, and I was not done informing
them on our full diagnostics.
DOCTOR 2 turns a shade of red, and nods, exiting the room.

DR. SCRIVELLO
Im sorry about that. Give me one
second to read these results over.
Dr. Scrivello opens the folder, and begins to scan over the
papers inside. His eyes widen, and he tries to hide it, but
Mrs. East catches it.
MRS. EAST
What? What is it?

Dr. Scrivello clears his throat and turns towards everybody

staring at him. We begin to hear Kaleb start screaming again
from the opposite side of the window, and this will continue
until the end.
DR. SCRIVELLO
Before we were interrupted, I was
going to tell you the rest of what
I thought the final diagnostic
would be, and according to these
results, my prediction was correct.

STEPHEN
What? What is it?
DR. SCRIVELLO
Usually when we get patients like
these, they seem to have suffered
from some sort of trauma.
RYAN
Like PTSD?

DR. SCRIVELLO
Somewhat. After taking a look at
these brain scans... The doctors
concluded that his brain was under
too much stress, too much pressure.
Which usually means that the
patient took on too much at once,
also that they lacked emotional
support. This drives the brain to
begin to drive itself over the
edge, sometimes causing
hallucinations, possibly explaining
Kalebs first outburst in the car.

DR. SCRIVELLO (contd)

The patient eventually loses the
ability to separate what is real,
from what is in their head.
Throughout all this, we see Mrs. East collapse to her knees,
and she buries her head in her hands. Mr. East clasps the
two boys shoulders. Kaleb is still breaking down behind
them.
DR. SCRIVELLO
In conclusion, according to all of
these test results, and from the
doctors predictions... Your son
has lost all ability to function on
his own, and, this could have been
avoided had he opened up to
someone, or someone had reached out
to him. Id like to tell you that
he will recover, that all itll
take is some therapy and hell be
good as new, but unfortunately,
Kaleb has lost all mental capacity,
and will never recover. Im so
sorry.
The group standing before Dr. Scrivello breaks down in
tears, and they all turn to the boy they once knew behind
the one-way window, screaming. Kaleb beings to repeat the
same words he did in the beginning.

KALEB
Shut up! Shut up! SHUT UP! SHUT UP!
SHUT UP! SHUT UP!
On the last shut up, the screen fades to black, and the word
"up" echoes for a few seconds, before fading into black
completely.
END.
