Theme Overview

Climate Change and Medicine - Immeasurable risks, Invaluable opportunities

Climate change is certainly a topical focus to choose for the EAMSC 2017. It is a global health issue
that has been explored at great depth and has particularly gained pertinence recently, due to the
surges in research, education and policy change. Along with this increase in awareness, there has been
a greater understanding of the vast impacts that climate change has toward our health, with effects
varying on different geographical regions. With its huge burden on the health sector, tackling climate
change is a responsibility that medical professionals and students must adopt, in order to be equipped
with the knowledge and skills required to face its disease -related associations in future practice.

Climate changes effects towards health have now been understood to extend beyond just the
healthcare setting. The consequences of a change in temperature include direct impacts such as
extreme weather events, leading to heat waves, storms and large scale disasters such as droughts and
floods. Warmer climates also affect the transmission of infectious diseases, and newly emergent and
exotic diseases prove to be an issue for our growing human population with higher rates of
interconnectedness. There will be additional stresses on food and water supplies, including crops and
reservoirs affected by high temperatures. Additionally, there have been socioeconomic impacts and
job prospect implications, especially in businesses and industries including farming, fishing and
tourism. These effects, though seemingly beyond the scope of a healthcare professional, may
ultimately lead to medical illnesses, resulting from the complex intertwined nature of social
determinants of health.

An important question to address at this stage now is, what is the role of a medical professional in
relation to climate change? It seems that doctors may be involved in any aspect of prevention or
treatment. For instance, the downstream role may include providing reactive healthcare to
climate -associated illnesses, be it direct impacts such as disaster related, or indirect as a result of
loss of livelihood and mental health illness. On the other hand, doctors have the ability to influence
others through an upstream capacity, by educating their communities about climate change and its
effects. Some medical professionals also choose to engage in roles that serve to advocate for
sustainable policy making and the providing of sustainable health care. In addition, medical
professionals must continue to undertake research relating to measurement of health effects, the
preparedness of health services, and the efficacy of current health promotion strategies.

The effect of climate change on health will almost definitely be an issue that current students will one
day see in their future practices. We therefore hope that this competition will provide an opportunity
for students to actively engage in their education, of climate change and its links to medicine.
