I. PREPARATION
Content (cognitive) Objectives:
Students will be able to:

Compare non-representational works of art with abstract works of art.


Identify and use only the primary color scheme of red, yellow, and blue.
Create a unified artwork by drawing only horizontal and vertical lines to create
numerous rectangles.

Language Objectives: English Language Proficiency, Comprehension (Include 4


language skills and vocabulary.
Students will be able to:
1. Students will listen to instructions and class discussions.
2. Students will participate in class discussions by forming questions or answering
with short one or two word responses.
3. Students will read the vocabulary words posted throughout the classroom, on the
slide show and on the evaluation rubric.
4. Students will fill out the sentence stems included on the evaluation rubric.
5. Students will use the prior knowledge of vocabulary words to explain their
understanding of new vocabulary words.

Materials: Paper, pencil, rulers, black permanent marker, red, blue, and yellow
markers, physical examples of teacher and student artwork.

II. VOCABULARY:
Fine tip, Broad side, Horizontal lines, Vertical lines, Perpendicular lines,
Rectangle, Primary colors, Color scheme, Simplistic Style, Non-
representational Art

Teacher will introduce the key vocabulary while building on students prior
knowledge of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.

III. BUILDING BACKGROUND
1. Students will review the principles of design and the elements of art with the
teacher. (these are always boldly posted in the classroom in more than one
place.)
2. Teacher will use a slideshow of artist Piet Mondrian and incorporate the key
vocabulary into the class discussion.
3. Teacher will use the key vocabulary while building on prior knowledge of the
principles of design.

IV. PRESENTATION
1. Teacher will show slideshow and facilitate a class discussion.
2. Introduce Piet Mondrians art work along with furniture designs and
household items that are inspired by his art.
3. Introduce the vocabulary of non-representational vs. abstract. (Show
physical examples of each.)
4. Discuss how the artist creates his simplistic, non-representational designs
with limited use of line and color.

V. PRACTICE AND APPLICATION


Day 1
1. Demonstrate how to draw an outline of an abstract animal or other object
and incorporate the non-representational horizontal and vertical line
design within the shape.
2. Show completed examples from teacher and previous students.
3. Discuss plans to demonstrate using the marker technique at a later date.
4. Students begin practicing this technique after watching the teacher
demonstrate.
Day 2
1. Review steps of the practice piece and the vocabulary: horizontal and
vertical line, simplistic design, rectangles, etc.
2. Finish practice piece and decide on final design.
3. Discuss the primary color scheme and the limited use.
4. Students begin drawing their final design with pencil.
Day 3
1. Review the slideshow and vocabulary of the artists style.
2. Students finish drawing their final designs with pencil.
3. Teacher will demonstrate first and students will begin outlining their
designs with black permanent marker.
4. Demo how to use the primary color markers in select rectangles only
using the outline and fill technique. (Outline with Fine point and fill in with
Broad side)
5. Students will work the remainder of the period.
Day 4-5
1. Students will work on their final project.
2. Teacher will demonstrate proper cutting and gluing techniques.

3. When finished, students will cut around the object they drew and neatly
mount it to a contrasting piece of construction paper.

VII. REVIEW OBJECTIVES AND ASSESSMENT

1. We will have reviewed the objectives one on one and as a class


throughout the working days.
2. When the students finish they will complete an evaluation that allows them
to discuss the objectives and the vocabulary that they have learned.
3. They will submit this completed rubric with their practice and their final
which will demonstrate their progress and whether or not they met the
standards and learning objectives.
