and Sons, Inc.

Course Description:
This course carries 3 credit hours offered as 2 lectures (80 minutes each) per week. It is a
comprehensive survey of chemistry offered for dentistry students that emphasize the
principles underlying the formation and interaction of chemical substances:
stoichiometry, types of chemical reactions, thermochemistry, atomic and molecular
structure, intermolecular forces, solutions, thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical
equilibrium, acids and bases, entropy and free energy.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1- To introduce the students to the language of chemistry and the scientific way of critical
thinking.
2- To provide basic information for the understanding of how the states of matter can be
described and altered and express chemical changes in the form of balanced chemical
equations.
3- To give an insight on how energy is transformed during a chemical reaction.

1
4- To introduce the fundamental concepts of bonding, bonding models, and molecular
geometry.
5- To gain insight on the nature of intermolecular forces, change of states, and phase
diagrams.
6- To study acid and base equilibria
7- To study the laws of thermodynamics and appreciate their significance
8- To acquire a working knowledge of chemical kinetics

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of the course students should acquire the following capabilities:
Understand some basic concepts of chemistry and the philosophy behind studying
them.
Learn the different states of matter and their properties.
Explore the concept of the periodic table and the properties of different elements.
Develop thorough understanding of the theory of chemical stoichiometry and its
applications to chemical reactions.
Apply the ideal gas laws for calculations involving gaseous reactions.
Understand the general concepts of thermodynamics and apply them to calculate
enthalpy and internal energy changes during any chemical reaction.
Work out electronic configurations of the atoms and their consequences in
interpreting and predicting the properties of the atoms.
Achieve knowledge about the theories of chemical bonding and how to construct
Lewis and molecular structures.
Gain basic knowledge of the different types of intermolecular forces and phase
diagrams.
Acquire ample skills in simple chemical laboratory experiments and in report
writing.

The topics (chapters to be covered) will be distributed as follows:
