The Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train, which will be launched by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe, is expected to
cost Rs. 1.10 lakh crore for the first rail link. Japan will fund 81 per cent of the
entire project.
AHMEDABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo
Abe, who is arriving today for a two-day visit, will together launch work on India's first
bullet train in Ahmedabad tomorrow. The project, a joint venture between the Indian
Railways and the Japanese firm Shinkansen Technology, signals a big leap for the
country's transport infrastructure and overburdened railways.
Here are 10 points on the massive bullet train project
1. The bullet train is expected to cost Rs. 1.10 lakh crore for the first rail link. Japan will
fund 81 per cent of the entire project in soft loans at an interest rate of 0.1%, with
repayment over 50 years.

2. The new train can carry 750 passengers between PM Modi's home state Gujarat and
Mumbai, the financial capital. In a day, it will make 70 Ahmedabad-Mumbai sorties.

3. It is expected to run on an average speed of 250 km per hour, with a top speed of
around 320 km per hour - more than double the maximum speed of the fastest train in
India.

4. Of the 508-km stretch, 92 per cent of the route will be elevated, six per cent in tunnel
and the rest two per cent will be on the ground.

5. The high speed train will also pass through the country's biggest tunnel of 21 km, of
which seven km will be under the sea.

6. Over 460 km of the route will be on elevated track, 27 km inside the tunnel and the
remaining 13 km on the ground.
7. First bullet train is expected to run in less than five years. New Railways Minister Piyush
Goyal said the train will start running between Mumbai and Ahmedabad on August 15,
2022 - when India completes 75 years of independence.

8. The bullet train will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad with a total of 12 stations.

9. The travel time will be reduced from eight hours to a little over three hours if it stops at
all stations and around two hours if it stops at only four.

10. A greater stretch of this link, 351 km, will run through Gujarat and 156 km through
Maharashtra.

that such a huge project is being funded so favorably.

The Shinkansen technology, known for it proven reliability and safety for more than 50
years ensures train delay is less than a minute with zero fatality.

High Speed Railways System run trains at a speed of 250 kmph. The system was so far
available in 15 countries, where India was the lone exception to not have the HSR is
spite of being a major passenger railway system.

At a speed of 350 kmph


The Maharashtra-Ahmedabad HSR project in India will be having a total length of
approximately 508 KMs, double line through two states Gujarat, Maharashtra and the
UTs of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
Longest tunnel will be of 21 KMs with 7 KMs under sea.

Journey time between the two cities, spanning over 700 KMs, with limited stops would
be 2.07 hours.

Covering a total of 12 stations in its journey, the maximum speed of the rail would be
around 350 kmph.
