To assure the system is properly designed, thereby, maximizing the opportunity for
success, a detailed assessment of the specific lost circulation situation shall be made by
BJ Services and BP-Amoco engineering staff. Wellbore architecture, loss
type/location/rates (dynamic & static), wellbore fluids, bha, bhp, etc. must be integrated
into the system design. Final system design will be based on setting characteristics
required to address the specific loss case and then coupled with the appropriate
placement procedure.
MIXING PROCEDURE
1. Slowly mix 171.4 pounds of Polymer blend per barrel of diesel through the mud
hopper or inductor on the batch mixer. If a hopper is not available it can be
added to the top of a tank that has good agitation. After the polymer is blended
in the diesel shut down the hoppers and continue to slowly stir using the pit
agitators.
2. Add 2 gpt OB-1 and slowly add 20 to 50 lbs/bbl Magne Plus or other acid soluble
bridging material (i.e. Master Seal, Liquid Casing, etc.) to the polymer
suspension. The OB-1 is used to disperse the system so that the bridging
material can be added with adversely affecting the viscosity. If OB-1 is not
available the slurry can still be mixed, but only 10 to 20 lbs/bbl of bridging
material should be used.

PUMPING PROCEDURE
3. The Pre-flush and Post flush systems should be mixed in a separate tank. Blend
2 gpt of catalyst (XLW-60) and 2 gpt surfactant (NE-118) in fresh water. Reaction
of system can be modified through the elimination of the activator in the pre-flush
water. The activator and surfactant can also be added directly to the polymer
suspension and omitted from the pre-flush and post flush. This will enhance the
simplicity of the system, as well as, alloy for activation by water based drilling
fluids. (Note: No water should come into contact with the polymer
suspension prior to displacing to the loss zone. Flush all pumps, lines and
storage containers with diesel, prior to mixing the PloyFX.)
It is important to the success of this operation to have a clear understanding of the loss
mechanism and location. Annular and drill string injection rates will be based on what
the loss rate is at the time of the job.
1. The volume of PolyFX is determined by the loss rate, capacity of the hole and
length of the interval to be sealed. Plug volume is three times the capacity of the
hole across the loss interval plus five percent of the losses in bph.
Example: 8.5" hole, 50' loss interval, and losses of 300 bph
[(0.0702 bbl/ft x 50') 3] + [300 bph x 0.05] = 25.5 bbls
2. Establish injection rate and determine location of the losses. Monitor and record
all losses. The cement unit will pump down the drill pipe and rig will handle
pumping down the backside.
4. Batch mix the PolyFX and catalyst as specified in the mixing procedure.
5. Place the work string at least 30 feet, but not more than 90 feet, above lost
circulation zone.
Note: The volume of material used is dependent on the capacity of the hole,
length of the loss zone and severity of the losses. The combined volume
of Pre-flush and Post-flush should be twice the volume of the PolyFX.

7. Displace the system with mud or seawater using the cement unit, at the
maximum rate allowed.
8. Once half of the preflush is outside the drill pipe, shut in the annulus, reduce rate
down the work string to 3 bpm. When the polymer pill exits the work string slow
rate to 1 bpm and begin pumping down the annulus at 1 bpm. Do not pump
more than the volume of preflush that is around the bha. This will aid in mixing
the crosslinker with the polymer pill. (NOTE: This procedure is only used, if lift up
the backside of the work string is expected. If the well demonstrates sever
losses this may not be the case and pumping down the annulus is not advised.
However the annulus should be shut in to prevent the polymer from getting
around the bha.)
10. Continue pumping, leaving enough PolyPlug in the annulus to cover the lost
circulation zone plus 10 feet.
11. Pull up ten stands, making sure that the bha is free of polymer, shut in the
annulus and hold 100 psi squeeze pressure for 30 minutes.
12. If losses are still occurring. Determine the rate and evaluate second treatment.
13. Assuming the plug holds, circulate and condition well clearing work string of any
excess catalyst. Slowly wash back to bottom gradually increasing the circulating
rate back to the pre-loss rates. Closely monitor returns.
