As I was looking through an old hymnal today I began to read all of the
wonderful words to songs that I have known and sang for many years. Some
were of victory, some were of mountains and valleys, some were about the
shed blood of Christ and some were praises to God. Just reading the words
of these songs that I know, and many that I don’t know, has encouraged me.
If I wrote a song for Jesus what story would it tell? Would it tell of His
“amazing grace”, “His power to set me free”, “the love of God’? I found so
many songs that told “my story” of His grace, redemption, healing,
deliverance, of His love for me, and my hope in Him to give me everything
that I need. How could I write a song that told more than these songs tell?
“Follow Me”
I traveled down a lonely road and no one seemed to care, the burden on my
weary back had bowed me to despair, I oft complained to Jesus how folks
were treating me, and then I heard Him say so tenderly, My feet were always
weary, upon the Calvary road; the cross became so heavy, I fell beneath the
load, be faithful weary pilgrim the morning I can see, just lift your cross and
follow close to me. I work so hard for Jesus I often boast and say I’ve
sacrificed a lot of things to walk the narrow way, I gave up fame and
fortune, I’m worth a lot to thee, and then I hear Him gently say to me, I left
the throne of glory and counted it but loss, my hands were nailed in anger
upon a cruel cross, but now we’ll make the journey with your hand safe in
mine, so lift your cross and follow close to me.
“Pass me not”
Pass me not Oh gentle Savior, hear my humble cry, while on others thou art
calling, do not pass me by. Let me at thy throne of mercy find a sweet relief,
kneeling there in deep contrition, help my unbelief. Thou the spring of all
my comfort more than life to me, whom have I on earth beside thee, whom
in Heaven but thee. Savior, Savior, hear my humble cry, while on others
thou art calling, do not pass me by.
The subject of my writing today is not just about hymns, or music, or lyrics,
but about what our hearts are filled with because what they are filled with
will come out. It could be a song that comes out or a poem, or even a book.
If you wrote a song from your heart what would it say? Would it speak of
heaven, of His grace and love, of eternity, of trials being over, of victory, of
the shed blood of Jesus? What is it about your walk with the Lord that
makes your heart so full that you would want to tell others?
Take some time today to think about what God has done for you. Maybe you
can write a song or a poem to tell Jesus what He means to you and let it be a
testimony to others of His love, grace and mercy.
Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by
the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
