Introduction to the Course:

This course intends to impart knowledge about principles of heat and mass transfer applicable
to design of thermal systems. Students are taught the modes of heat transfer and their
governing laws, thermal properties of materials, principles of boiling and condensation and
various types of heat exchangers.

PART A
A1 (10 Marks)
Heat transfer between a system and surroundings occurs due to temperature difference.
Convection, conduction and radiation are three modes of heat transfer. The primary objective
in heat transfer is to determine the temperature field, T(x,y,z,t), in a body (i.e. how
temperature varies with position within the body). In real life heat transfer occurs everywhere
like boiler, condenser, IC engines, Refrigerators, Electronic devices etc. The temperature
difference and heat transfer depends on, boundary conditions, initial condition, material
properties (k, cp, ), and geometry (shape, size).
In this context debate on,

Geometry is the most influencing parameter in Heat Transfer

Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences

Your debate should address the following:

A 1.1 Discussion on modes of heat transfer and influencing parameters
A 1.2 Discussion on any two heat transfer applications and the influencing parameters,
which affects it
A1.3 Justification of your stance with conclusion

PART B (40 Marks)

B.1 (10 Marks)
Heat treatment methods, such as stress relieving, hardening and annealing, strengthen the
ductility and corrosion resistance properties of the metal that is modified during fabrication,
or generate hard structures capable of tolerating abrasion and high mechanical stresses.
During one such heat treatment process, a large stainless sheet is subjected to heating in a
furnace for few hours. It is then removed from the furnace and allowed to cool in air.
Determine the time required for the center of the sheet to cool to T 2C if the initial
temperature of the sheet is T1C. The sheet is x cm thick and has a density of 8,480 kg/m3, a
specific heat of 470 J/kgK, and a thermal conductivity of 15 W/mK. The heat transfer
coefficient to the air is 100 W/m2K, and the ambient air temperature is 27C.
Use an explicit method and compare your results with those from a chart solution.
Your report should address the following:
B1.1 Identification of Governing Differential Equation for the system, appropriate
boundary conditions
B1.2 Derivation of an equation for temperature using explicit method
B1.3 Determination of time required for cooling
B1.4 Comparison of the results obtained with chart values along with suitable comments

(Consult the course leader for the values of T1, T2 and x.)

B.2 (10 Marks)

A biomass fired furnace operates at a temperature of 1000 oC.
The furnace is to be insulated
to reduce the heat loss as well as improve the efficiency. It is decided to insulate this high
temperature furnace by having two layers of insulation. Assume the inner surface
temperature of the inner insulating layer to be same as that of furnace operating
temperature. By doing a survey of commercially available insulating materials, design an
optimum combination of materials to insulate the furnace. The goal is to reduce the rate of
heat transfer to 5% of that without any insulation, when the ambient temperature is 25oC.
B2.1 Survey the different commercially available thermal insulation materials including its
cost
B2.2 Determination of rate of heat transfer from the walls of the biomass fired furnace
without any insulation
B2.3 Choose any two combinations of materials as surveyed from B2.1 and determine the
material thickness to reduce the heat transfer to 5% and their cost
B2.4 Suggest the best suitable combination with proper justification

B3 (10 Marks)
A composite wall consists of two different materials (A and B) wherein the left face of material
A is insulated and the right face of material B is exposed to a heat transfer coefficient of h
W/m2K. The thermal conductivity of A is ka W/mK whereas the material B has a variable
thermal conductivity of kb = f(T). Due to resistance heating inside the material A, thermal
energy is generated at the rate of QA W/m3.
B3.1 Determine the heat transfer through the composite wall.
B3.2 Plot the temperature distribution for the system.
If there was a contact resistance of Ra-b between materials A and B, then
B3.3 Determine the heat transfer through the composite wall.
B3.4 Plot the temperature distribution for the system with contact resistance.
B3.5 Comment on both the results.
(Consult the course leader for required data)

B4 (10 Marks)
Air cooled motorcycle engines release heat to the atmosphere through convection. The rate
of heat transfer depends upon the wind velocity, geometry of engine surface, external surface
area and the ambient temperature. To increase the convective heat transfer, one can increase
the effective surface area by using fins or extended surfaces. Consider a rectangular fin that
is used to cool a motorcycle engine. The fin is L m long and at a temperature of TC, while
the motorcycle is moving at 80 km/h in air at ambient conditions. The air is in parallel flow
over both surfaces of the fin, and turbulent flow conditions may be assumed to exist
throughout.
B4.1 Calculate the rate of heat removal per unit width of the fin.
B4.2 Calculate the heat removal rate per unit width of the fin for motorcycle speeds
ranging from 10 to I00 km/h.
B4.3 Plot the heat removal rate per unit width of the fin for motorcycle speeds ranging
from 10 to 100 km/h and comment.
