This reference contains general information on how to identify General Motors transmissions.
In addition to the information in this reference, you can also identify transmissions by
comparing the transmission pan gasket to the gaskets listed on the Snap-on Automatic
Transmission ID Chart. This reference identifies the following General Motors transmissions:

The fastest and easiest way to identify a transmission model is by the vehicle type, the
external shape of the transmission, and the gear selector positions on the steering column. A
brief description of each transmission follows.
03-72LEThe 03-72LE is a 4-speed rear wheel drive automatic transmission with overdrive,
a lockup torque converter, and shift lock control shift indicator. The shift indicator has D, 2,
and L with an O/D cancel switch.
200C The 200C is a 3-speed RWD transmission with a lockup torque converter. It has a
throttle valve (TV) cable and no vacuum modulator. The shift indicator has D, 2, 1 or D, 2, L.

200-4RThe 200-4R is a 4-speed overdrive RWD transmission with a lockup torque


converter. It has two drive (D) positions on the gear selector. One may be a D with a circle
around it, or the positions may be marked D1 and D2. The 200-4R rear extension is not
removable; it is part of the case casting.
245EThe 245E is an electronically controlled, transverse mounted, 4-speed transaxle with
torque converter lockup. The shift indicator has D, 2, and 1 with an O/D cancel switch.
250CThe 250C is a 3-speed RWD transmission with a lockup torque converter. It has a
kickdown cable, a vacuum modulator, and an external band adjustment on the passenger
side of the transmission case. The shift indicator has D, 2, 1 or D, 2, L. (See the 350C
description below.)
3T40 (125C)The 3T40 is a 3-speed FWD transaxle with a transverse mounted engine and
a lockup torque converter. It has only one drive (D) position on the gear selector.
325-4LThe 325-4L is a 4-speed FWD transmission with a longitudinal mounted engine and
a lockup torque converter. It was used only on 198285 Eldorado, Seville, Toronado, and
Riviera. It is a longitudinally mounted transmission with a separate final-drive (differential)
assembly. The shift indicator has D, 3, 2, 1.
325The 325 is a 3-speed FWD transmission, similar to the 3254L. However, the shift
indicator only has D, 2, 1 or D, 2, L.
350CThe 350C is the same as the 250C, except there is no external band adjustment on
the 350C.
3L30 (180C)The 3L30 is a 3-speed throttle-cable-shifted, longitudinally mounted
transmission with torque converter lockup. This transmission has a modulator that increases
operator shifting feedback. The shift indicator has D, 2, and 1.
3L80 (400)The 3L80 is a 3-speed RWD transmission with no torque converter clutch, that
is used in GM trucks and vans. The 3L80 has a vacuum modulator and an electric kickdown
(no cable).
4L30EThe 4L30E is a 4-speed RWD electronically controlled transmission with TCC used
in the 1997-99 Cadillac Catera. The 4L30E has no dipstick, or vacuum modulator. It uses a
side fluid access plug and two fluid reservoir pans.
4L60 (700-R4) The 4L60 is a 4-speed overdrive RWD transmission with a longitudinal
mounted engine and a lockup torque converter. It has two drive (D) positions on the gear
selector. One may be a D with a circle around it, or the positions may be marked D1 and D2.
The rear extension of the 700-R4 is a separate, removable casting.
4L60EThe 4L60E is an electronic version of the 4L60. Thee 4L60E is a 4-speed
longitudinally mounted transmission with torque converter lockup. Beginning with the 1995
model year, General Motors equipped the 4L60E with altered shift solenoids and added a
PMW lockup torque converter. The shift indicator has D, 3, 2, and 1.
4L60E-HDThe 4L60E-HD is a heavy-duty version of the 4L60E.
4L65EThe 4L65E is a heavy-duty version of the 4T60E.
4L80EThe 4L80E is a 4-speed RWD electronically controlled transmission used in General
Motors trucks and vans. The 4L80E has no throttle valve (TV) cable and no vacuum
modulator. The 4L80E also has a multiwire connector located on the driver side of the
transmission case.
4L80E-HDThe 4L80E-HD is a heavy-duty version of the 4L80E.
4L85EThe 4L85E is a heavy-duty version of the 4L80E.

4T40E/4145EThe 4T40E is a 4-speed FWD electronically controlled transaxle used in GM


cars since 1996. The 4T40E has no throttle valve (TV) cable and no vacuum modulator. The
4T40E has a multiwire connector at the front of the transmission case above the cooler lines.
The 4T40E has no dipstick.
4T45EThe 4T45E is a heavy-duty version of the 4T40E.
4T60 (440-T4)The 4T60 is a 4-speed overdrive FWD transaxle with a transverse mounted
engine and a lockup torque converter. It has two drive (D) positions on the gear selector. One
may be a D with a circle around it, or the positions may be marked D1 and D2. (See 4T60E
description)
4T60EThe 4T60E is an electronically controlled 4T60 (440-T4). The 4T60 has a throttle
valve (T.V.) cable, the 4T60E does not. The 4T60E also has a multiwire connector located
above the modulator.
4T65The 4T65E is a FWD electronically controlled transaxle used in GM cars since 1997.
The 4T65E has no throttle valve (TV) cable and no vacuum modulator. The 4T65E has a
multiwire connector located on the driver side of the transmission.
4T65E-HDThe 4T65E-HD is a heavy-duty version of the 4T65E.
4T80EThe 4T80E is a 4-speed FWD electronically controlled transmission. The
transmission connector is near the fill plug.
5ATThe 5AT automatic transmission is a combination of a 3-element torque converter and
a triple-shaft electronically controlled unit, which provides five forward and one reverse
speeds. The entire unit is positioned in line with the engine. It is used on certain FWD and
AWD vehicles.
5L40EThe 5L40E is a fully automatic 5-speed RWD electronically controlled transmission.
It consists primarily of a 4-element torque converter, a single planetary gearset, friction and
mechanical clutches, and a hydraulic pressurization and control system. The shift indicator
has OD, 4, 3, and 2.
5L50EThe 5L50E is a fully automatic 5-speed RWD electronically controlled transmission.
It consists primarily of a 4-element torque converter, a single planetary gearset, friction and
mechanical clutches, and a hydraulic pressurization and control system.
A131The A131 is a 3-speed throttle-cable-shifted transaxle that is transverse mounted. It
has a mechanical lockup torque converter. The shift indicator has D, 2, and 1.
A210/MX17 The A210 is a 3-speed throttle-cable and solenoid shifted transaxle. It is
transverse mounted with no lockup. This is the only automatic available for the General
Motors Metro. The shift indicator has D, 2, and 1.
A245EThe A245E is a 4-speed electronic transsaxle with overdrive, lockup torque
converter and shift lock control shift indicator. The shift indicator has D, 2, and L.
AF23-5The AF23-5 is a fully automatic, 5-speed, electronically controlled, FWD
transmission. It consists primarily of a 4-element torque converter, three planetary gearsets,
friction and mechanical clutches, and a hydraulic pressurization and control system. The shift
indicator has D, I, and L.
AF33-5The AF33-5 is a fully automatic, 5-speed, electronically controlled, FWD
transmission. It consists primarily of a 4-element torque converter, three planetary gearsets,
friction and mechanical clutches, and a hydraulic pressurization and control system. The shift
indicator has D, I, and L.

Aisin (81-40LE)The Aisin (81-40LE) is an electronically controlled, 4-speed automatic


transmission with lockup mechanism. It consists primarily of a torque converter with lockup
clutch, a 4-speed planetary gearset, a hydraulic pressurization and control system, and an
electronic control system.
Allison 1000The Allison 1000 transmission is either a 5- or 4-speed electronically
controlled, longitudinal mounted with torque converter lock up. It has a transmission controller
to operate the shifts and control lock up. The shift indicator has D, 4, 3, 2, and 1.
Allison LCT 1000The Allison LCT 1000 transmission is a 6-speed electronically controlled
unit with torque converter lock up. The LCT 1000 is basically a 5-speed transmission with an
overdrive gear ratio for fifth gear.
MU4 (A246E)The MU4 (A246E) is a fully automatic, electronically controlled, FWD
transmission. The PCM controls shift points by means of 2 shift solenoids, a third solenoid
controls application of the torque converter clutch. A gear-driven pump supplies the oil
pressure, which the PCM regulates by means of a pressure control solenoid valve. The shift
indicator has Overdrive, D, 2, and 1.
MU5 (A341F)The MU5 (A341F) is a fully automatic, electronically controlled, FWD
transmission. The PCM controls shift points by means of 2 shift solenoids, a third solenoid
controls application of the torque converter clutch. The PCM regulates oil pressure by means
of a pressure control solenoid valve. A fifth solenoid controls application timing of the O/D and
2nd brake, which reduces shift shock. The shift indicator has Overdrive, D, 2, and 1.
TAATThe TAAT is an electronically controlled, transverse-mounted, 4-speed transaxle with
torque converter lockup. The shift indicator has D, 2, 1 with an O/D cancel switch.
VT25-EThe VT25-E is a fully automatic, continuously variable, FWD transmission. It
consists primarily of a 4-element torque converter, a single planetary gearset, an electronic
hydraulic pressurization and control system, two variable drive pulleys, two friction clutches,
and a differential assembly. The shift indicator has D, I, and LOW.

Regular Production Option (RPO) Numbers


General Motors transmission RPO number are the sales codes used to order and build the
vehicle. It is often necessary to supply the transmission RPO number when ordering parts
from a GM dealer. Transmission RPO numbers are listed in Table G1001-1 on page G4. The
number is on the vehicle RPO, or build, label. Refer to Table G1001-2 or Table G1001-3 for
label locations..
