TITLE : REPAIR OF CARBON STEEL & LAS WELDS - METHOD STATEMENT

1.00 Scope

This procedure specifies the specific requirements for repair of unacceptable weld defects revealed by
non-destructive examination of welds or leak/pressure testing in equipment.

2.00 Reference Specifications

ASME Sec.IX
Appropriate Cameron NDT procedures and Quality Plan

3.00 Repair location

3.01 Location of repairable defects to be clearly marked on the surface of the weld.

4.00 Method of defect removal

4.01 Excavate the defects by grinding. Oxy-acetylene torch shall not to be used for defect removal.
Grinding shall be done in such a manner that adjacent weld metal or base metal is not
nicked.

5.00 Preparation of weld area

5.01 The groove shall extend at least 25mm on either side beyond the extremities of the defect to ensure that
the defect is completely removed.

5.02 Excavated groove shall be prepared to have suitable contour and smooth transition for re-welding and
shall be free from notches and sharp corners. Ground surface to obtain smooth and bright metal surface
prior to repair welding.

6.00 Inspection prior to repair welding

6.01 Prepared groove shall be visually inspected prior to repair welding.

6.02 The prepared groove shall be subjected to DPI prior to repair welding, to ensure that the defect is
completely removed.

7.00 Repair welding

7.01 Repairs to correct weld defects shall be made using qualified welders and same approved WPS.

7.02 After repair the PWHT/heat treatment shall be carried out as per approved heat treatment procedure.

7.03 Hardness testing of the weld and HAZ shall be carried out as per approved hardness testing procedure.

7.04 Penetrant testing shall be carried out as per approved PT procedure.

Note:- A maximum of two times weld repairs are allowed in the same area.

8.00 Re-examination

8.01 The repaired area shall be re-examined using the same examination method and procedure by which the
defect was originally detected.
