4. APPLICANTS BACKGROUND

Tips: Add as much of a story as possible, the more you add into this story the better,
start with how you began with firearms, how do you use them, where do you use them,
why do you use them, a short history of the firearm/s and the ammunition used with this
firearm.
Please use correct terms in your application, dont use terms like I want a gun to shoot
animals with bullets on my farm, rather I am applying for a Firearm licence and I will
use this Rifle with .303 rounds to hunt ethically on my farm. Also dont say and I want
this gun to also teach my wife and kids how to shoot, if you are not an accredited
firearms Instructor, dont add this in; they will think you are teaching the neighbours
how to shoot firearms.
REMEMBER DONT LIE, IF THEY FIND OUT, YOU WILL BE REFUSED THE FIREARM.

Explain that the firearm will be used for that specific purpose (Hunting, bird shooting, or
self defence and sport shooting), if the firearm application is a Handgun, then your final
sentence must say the firearm will be used as a very last resort license applications
get refused based mostly because of insufficient motivation.

Initial 8
As a young boy I was introduced to firearms by my father. After completing high school I
attended military training where I received training in the safe and efficient handling of
handguns small, medium and heavy arms. After my military training I joined a shooting club
and started shooting with these club members. This is where I also received training in the safe
and efficient handling of firearms when i was younger.

For the last six (6) years I hunt actively and have shot the following game specie, Springbok,
Kudu, Rooibok, Gemsbok and Blesbok. I have hunted in Alldays, Colesberg and Swartrigens.

From my first hunting expedition I was schooled in the importance of firearm safety during a
hunt and therefore I have an extensive knowledge wrt the following aspects: Safe and efficient
handling of a firearm during a hunt, permits, ordinances and proclamations, safe custody and
transporting of firearms, firearm and ammunition control, nature conservation and hunting
ethics. This has shown me how to track animals and hunt them in an ethical manner.

Attached find a letter of the owner of the game ranch confirming that I have made use of his
facility for hunting purposes.

Annexure D.

5. CRIMINAL RECORD

I have no criminal record against my name and have not been found guilty of any offences that
can declare me unfit to possess a firearm as stipulated in Section 9 of the Firearms Control Act
2000 (Act No 60 of 2000).

6. NEW FIREARM LICENCE

I want to apply for the following firearm licence.

a. Pistol Make: CZ 75 Semi- Auto Pistol. Calibre:xxxxxxxx Serial number: xxxxxxxxxxxxx.

(Licence to possess a firearm for self-defence or sport shooting)

b. Revolver Make: xxxxxxxxx. Calibre: xxxxxxxxxxx. Serial number: xxxxxxxxxxx.

(Licence to possess a firearm for self-defence or sport shooting)

c. Rifle Make: xxxxxxxxx. Calibre: xxxxxxxxxxx. Serial number: xxxxxxxxxxxxx.

7. NEW APPLICATION

Handgun for Self-Defence

Handgun Make: CZ 75
Calibre: 9mm Para
Serial number: xxxxxxxxxx.

Here explain your whole work and home situation; be very specific as to why you think a
firearm is important to protect yourself and family. Please note you cannot protect
property, so you cannot say I need a gun to protect my car or large sums of cash or my
property.

I am a xxxxx year old male and I live with my wife, son and daughter in Boksburg / Sandton
and this firearm will play a vital role protecting my family and myself from a attack on us in our
home. I have put up six foot walls, with electric fencing, I have two large dogs and I burglar
bars on all my windows and doors. I am connected to Chubb with an alarm in my home, we
have 24 armed response.

Explain n detail how long, high and strong all the security measures you have put in place to
prevent a break in or attack. Then your final sentence must say the firearm will be used
as a very last resort license applications get refused based mostly because of
insufficient motivation.

As a man/ woman of xxxx years I am the owner of business or / work at therefore I

work late hours or shifts/ or in remote areas, drive alone and at times fear for my life. I transport
cash or company equipment. I lock up the business on my own etc.

You cannot say I need a gun to protect my car or large sums of cash or my property.

Short story how the firearm works

Therefore the firearm in the application is something that I want to use to protect my life. The CZ
75/ 9mm Parabellum semi-automatic pistol is a type of handgun that can be fired in semi-
automatic mode, firing one cartridge for each pull of the trigger. This type of firearm uses a
single chamber and a single barrel, which remain in a fixed linear orientation relative to each
other while being fired and reloaded semi-automatically.

The semi-automatic pistol functions by using the energy from the recoil of a single round of
ammunition to extract and eject a fired cartridge from the pistol's chamber and load an unfired
round from a magazine into the chamber for the next shot. Most types of semi-automatic pistols
rely on a removable magazine for supplying new ammunition to reload the chamber to be able
to fire the gun. The removable magazine is typically located inside the hand grip and makes the
9mm Parabellum an ideal self-defense weapon.

22 calibre six shot revolver. 2.5" barrel. Double action, an ideal for recreational shooting
(Target Shooting). The rim of the Rimfire cartridge is essentially an extended and widened
percussion cap which contains the priming compound, while the cartridge case itself contains
the propellant powder and the projectile (bullet). Once the rim of the cartridge has been struck

The .22 LR Rifle will mainly be used for hunting small animals like rabbits, small deer etc. It
will also be used for sports shooting, and for inexpensive training. The low cost, minimal recoil
and low noise make the .22 LR an ideal rifle for recreational shooting and pest control.
The .22 LR rifle has a Bolt action. This is a type of firearm action in which the weapon's bolt is
operated manually by the opening and closing of the breech (barrel) with a small handle, most
commonly placed on the right-hand side of the weapon. As the handle is operated, the bolt is
unlocked, the breech is opened, and the spent case is withdrawn and ejected. Then the firing
pin is cocked (this occurs either on the opening or closing of the bolt, depending on design.

Finally a new round is placed into the breach and the bolt closed. Typically, the bolt consists of
a tube of metal inside of which the firing mechanism is housed, and which has at the front or
rear of the tube several metal knobs, or "lugs", which serve to lock the bolt in place. The
operation can be done via a rotating bolt, a lever, or a number of systems. Bolt-action firearms
have earned a reputation for being more accurate and reliable than any semi-automatic rifle.
For this reason, they are still the choice of many hunters and target shooters.

Rifle for occasional hunting

Rifle Make: Lee Enfield

Calibre: .303 British
Serial number: xxxxxxxxxx.

occasional hunter or occasional sport shooter. Attached find a letter of the owner of the game
ranch confirming that I have made use of his facility for hunting

(Annexure C).

The main purpose of the .303 Lee Enfield bolt-action magazine-fed, is to hunt medium to
large game species (with a weight of 150kg 400kg) like zebras, Kudus and Blou
Wildebeest.

The .303 Lee Enfield is a powerful rifle round and arguably the best-known medium-bore
cartridge in the world, this calibre is arguably one of the most popular hunting calibre in South
Africa and considering all animals, without a doubt the best all round rifle in the hunting
industry. The .303 Lee Enfield is a very accurate and reliable Rifle.

Personal Background of Applicant

1. As young boys my younger brother and I were brought-up in a house and family that loved
the outdoors and nature and we went on numerous trips to the Kruger National Park and
other game reserves with our parents and grandparents. Weve been going to these places
ever since and one of our recent highlights was the Elephant Backpack hiking trail that we
completed in the Kruger National Park in 2011.
2. I grew up on a small holding in Pretoria and as a young boy I was first introduced to
firearms by my father who regularly took us to the shooting range at the local military
base where I received training in the safe and efficient handling of handguns and small to
medium sized arms under the professional guidance and supervision of trained military
staff/personnel from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
3. For the last twelve (12) years I hunt actively and have shot the following small to medium
game species:
a. Warthog, Springbuck, Kudu, Impala, Blesbuck, Blue- and Black Wildebeest.
4. Ive mainly hunted in Thabazimbi and Swartwater, Limpopo. Please see Annexure D and

d. Firearm and ammunition control;
e. Nature conservation and hunting ethics. This has shown me how to track animals
and hunt them in an ethical manner.

Initial 8
Rifle for Occasional Hunting

Rifle: 30-06 Springfield, Bolt Action Centerfire Rifle

Make: Remington Model 700 CDL 30-06 made in the USA
Serial Number:
Please see Annexure G for a copy of the manufactures Rifle Owners manual.

1. The law determines in section 15 of the Firearms Control Act 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000)
that the Registrar may issue in terms of this section to any natural person who is an
occasional hunter or occasional sports person a license if they can provide proof that he is
an occasional hunter or occasional sport shooter. Please see Annexure D and Annexure
E for confirmation letters from owners of two of the game farms confirming that I have
made use of their facilities for hunting in the past as well Annexure F for an example of
the animals Ive hunted before.
2. I will only be hunting plains game which classifies as small through to medium game. The .
30-06 Springfield is the ideal all round calibre for small to medium game.
3. The .30-06 Springfield can shoot bullets weighing from 110grains at a muzzle velocity of
3500ft/sec all the way through to 220grains at a muzzle velocity of 2400ft/sec.
4. The most common loads that are available to the hunter that doesnt reload himself are
150grain, 180grain, and 220grain.
a. The 150grain is ideal to hunt springbuck in the plains of the Eastern Cape because
the bullet is slightly faster and you can comfortably take a longer shot (220m) if
needed.
b. The 180grain bullet is perfect for the bushveld region to hunt Impala and Warthog,
the bullet is slightly slower than the 150grain bullet but still has high penetration
ability and stopping power.
c. The 220grain bullet is perfectly suited for the bushveld region when you are
looking at hunting the elusive Kudu or the tough Wildebeest. The 220grain bullet is
again slightly slower than its counterparts but has the highest penetration ability of
the three.
5. I have added a table (Table 1) showing the test results that were conducted with the three
common loads. The table shows the bullet weights, the distances of the tests, the velocity
of the bullets at those distances measured in feet per second, the energy of the bullet
measured in foot pounds, the sectional density of the bullet, the weight retained on impact
and the penetration ability. I have also added a table (Table 2) showing how the
penetration ability factor was calculated.
6. As seen below the .30-06 Springfield is an extremely versatile calibre even with factory
loaded ammunition and even more so if you are reloading with maximum quality hunting
points and lots of testing. Due to the calibres popularity amongst hunters, ammunition is
available at almost any dealer and at an affordable price.

7. I have also attached a diagram (Diagram 1) of the dimension of the .30-06 Springfield

8. The rifle that I am applying for in this application is a .30-06 Springfield Remington Model
700 CDL. I bought this rifle after careful consideration and with assistance from the very
experienced staff at SAFARI & OUTDOOR WAREHOUSE (PTY) LTD in Lynwood Pretoria

Initial 8
where the rifle is also currently stored for safe keeping. The stock is American Walnut with
a Satin Blue Barrel finish. The rifle weighs approximately 7.5 lbs, so it is light enough to
carry for extended periods in the veldt and easy to handle but it is also heavy enough to
minimise recoil thus making it a perfectly suitable rifle for hunting small to medium game
in all conditions. Please see Annexure G for a copy of the manufactures Rifle Owners
manual.

In Conclusion

It is my intention to comply with the Firearms Control Act No 60 of 2000 and all that is said in
