One of the more notable
options in the bill is trans-
ferability. It gives career
service members who’ve
served on active duty or in
the selected reserve on or
after Aug. 1, 2009, the option
to transfer their education
benefits to family members,
Clark said. Transferability
was approved in the Post-
9/11 Veterans Education
Assistance Improvement Act
of 2008, which became law
in June 2008.
Panel members are debat-
ing that option for the 2010
bill. Some say transferabil-
ity shouldn’t be available
for every service member,
because of budget constraints.
Rather, the option should be
reserved for specific military
specialties that are difficult
to fill, they said.
“We had concerns about
the generous benefit being
more of a draw for first-
term members to leave [the
military] in order to use this
benefit,” Clark said. “[But]

NEWINGTON, Conn. – Members of the Iwo Jima Survivors Association came together Aug. 14, during a Candlelight Ceremony
of Remembrance at the National Iwo Jima Memorial Monument and Park, in Newington/New Britian, Conn. The event also
marked the official reunion of the Iwo Jima Survivors Association in Connecticut. The ceremony was held to remember the
100 Connecticut men who died at Iwo Jima during World War II.

a casualty, operate equip-
ment or platforms safely and
ensure backup as needed.
Warfare qualifications are
about ship, shipmate and
self, and ensure the safety
and safe operation of each
command and platform on a
daily basis.
“It’s a standard every Sailor
must achieve. The warfare
device itself is a symbol that
the Sailors who are wear-
ing it have a basic level of
knowledge to ensure they
are capable of fighting the
ship, saving a shipmate and
ensuring the safety of them-
selves at all times,” said

Sea Cadets conduct

10th annual field
training exercise

VOLUNTOWN, Conn. –
Amidst the nightly “insurgent
attacks”, standing three hour
sentry and roving watches, and
daily training exercises and
tromping through the forest, the
10th annual United States Naval
Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) Nautilus
(SSN 571) Division Field Training
Exercise, was full of excitement.
This year’s field training was
held in Pachaug State Forest,
August 11 – 14.
Six United States Sea Cadet
Corps divisions spanning New
England came together to form
the biggest of Nautilus Division’s
annual training exercises to
date. Cadets from Maine, New
Hampshire, and Connecticut par-
ticipated. During the training,
the Cadets formed squadrons
with names coined after famous
military officers in World War
II, Nimitz, Spruance, McArthur,
and Patton.
Training consisted of evolu-
tions such as: learning to make
a rope bridge, riot control, land
navigation, and field medicine
and first aid. In one particu-
lar evolution, Sea Cadets had
to keep their senses keen in
the dark of night. This “night
training” used sight, sound, and
smell. Tuna and tuna juice was
laid along the trail, a blanket
was hung from a tree, cellphone
lights occasionally glowed in the
distance, and booming firecrack-
ers sounded ceremoniously to
keep cadets on their toes. The
purpose of the exercise was to
stay as quiet as possible while
acknowledging sounds, sights,
and smells as they made their
way along a dark forest trail.
The third day of the field exer-
cise brought the Sea Cadets’
training to bear, culminating in
a 3.8 mile hike; quietly navigat-
ing forest trails, avoiding enemy
sentries and ambushes, manag-
ing their limited food supply,
and crossing a ravine via rope
bridge. Sea Cadets also paid a

of seven players from the
Norwich, Conn., area won the
Division Team Championship
for Connecticut in the fall
of 2009, and advanced to
the State Playoffs in June
of 2010, winning the State
Team Championship for 8
Ball, which set the team up
for the trip to Las Vegas. Both
championships were well
played out with Petty Officer
Namulik winning both of his
matches and the team pulling
in a 2-2 tie to put both cham-
pionship matches into sudden
death, making the winning
titles even more appreciated.
Namulik picked up his first
cue about 25 years ago, at 10
years of age, when he started
playing pool with his grand-
father at a fishing club on the
Niagara River in upstate New
York. He really couldn’t even
see over the table, he says,
but remembers the fun and
enjoyment it brought to him.
His best friend’s grandfather,
Edwin H. Banck, gave him
his first cue, a Meucci Jimmy
Rempe 2, at the age of 12.
After learning the game and
playing in pool halls back
in his home town of Buffalo,
N.Y., he knew that he would
always love this game.
Namulik has acquired more
cues through the years, but
that first cue Banck gave him
holds a sentimental place in
his heart. Recently, Namulik
had that cue restored by
Meucci, and it is a work of
art.
Although the team of
eight players is headed to
four players fend off hordes
of aliens while they prog-
ress through different stages,
completing objectives. You
and your friends can select
from eight different charac-
ters, each boasting their own
traits and qualities.

and it is an exact science
when building them,” says
Namulik. “I’m having a cue
built now by Mike Webb,
who is an amazing cue build-
er, but Webb just says, ‘I am
just building wood puzzles.’”
The process can take two to
three years from start to fin-
ish, or more. The wood has
to cure and be treated with
feeling. There is no rushing

VA eases claims process for veterans with PTSD

month intended to ease the
claims process and improve
access to health care for veter-
ans with post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD).

in the Federal Register, will relax
the evidence requirement if the
PTSD stressor claimed by a vet-

a noncombat veteran actually
experienced a stressor related
to hostile military activity, the

President Barack Obama called
the changes a “long-overdue
step” in his weekly address.
“I don’t think our troops on
the battlefield should have to
take notes to keep for a claims
application,” Obama said.
“And I’ve met enough veter-
ans to know that you don’t
have to engage in a firefight to
endure the trauma of war.”
The new regulation not
only will help veterans of the
Afghanistan and Iraq wars,
but “generations of their brave
predecessors who proudly
served and sacrificed in all our
wars,” the president said.
“It’s a step that proves
America will always be here
for our veterans, just as they’ve
been there for us,” he said.
“We won’t let them down.
We take care of our own. And
as long as I’m commander in
chief, that’s what we’re going
to keep doing.”
