Nghi Son petrochemical

refinery complex

Project Background
The Nghi Son petrochemical refinery complex is a joint
venture between state-owned PetroVietnam and foreign
partners from Kuwait and Japan. The refinery complex is
situated in Mai Lam area, Tinh Gia District, Thanh Hoa
province, Vietnam. This is the countrys second refinery
and the largest project so far.
The development consists of a plant area, a tank farm
and jetty areas.

Soil Condition and Solution


Based on the soil investigation report provided, the soil
profile in the area ranges from sandy silt to very stiff
clay.

Keller proposed the Vibro replacement method using


Stone columns to treat the area approximately 50,000
square meters. The area where the tank will be built
Client was treated up to 3 m wide ring outside the tank
Idemitsu Kosan Company Limited, footprint. Using Kellers dry bottom feed method, over
Mitsui Chemicals Inc., 100,000 linear meters of Vibro stone columns were
Kuwait Petroleum International, installed to depths of 18 m, supporting the 12 tanks up
PetroVietnam
to 90 m in diameter and 19.9 m in height.
Main Contractor
JGC, Chiyoda Corp, SK Engineering & Inspite of construction challenges, Keller completed the
Construction Co. Limited, GS Engineering & project without major accidents and was 2 weeks ahead
Construction Corp of schedule.
