The thesis deals with the study of corrosion

and its prevention in chemical industries and contains
twelve chapters. It is divided in two parts. Part I
deals with some of the topics of corrosion in chemical
industries and Part II deals with the study of
corrosion of common metals in marine and industrial-
cum-marine atmosphere and its prevention by paints.

The entire investigation presented in this
thesis is my original contribution to the advancement
of knowledge. The different topics studies for the
advancement include (i) corrosion in salt works and
its prevention (ii) corrosion of mild steel and
cement in sea water magneSia plant and its prevention
(iii) corrosion of mild steel in low oxygen gas
holder and its prevention by paints (iv) corrosion of
lead in spin bath of a rayon factory (v) corrosion
(internal) of tube well caSings and strainers and
its prevention in brackish waters of Gujarat State
(vi) eorrnsion of 5IS aluminium tubes in fresh

brackish and sea waters and its prevention by alkaline

chromate surface coatings and (vii) the monthly

corrosion rates of common metals in marine and
industria1-cum-marine atmosphere have been determined.
For each metal an equation has been derived for
arriving at the corrosion rate. The determination
of air pollutants like sulphur dioxide, ammonia
and salinity has been accomplished. The relative
corrodibl1ity of other sites of Saurashtra has
been compared. The suitability of five commercial
paints has been assessed in the field tests.
