1. ABSTRACT

In this experiment, the sample is melted and cooled under controlled conditions. The
penetration is measured with a penetrometer by means of which standard needle is
applied to the sample under specific conditions. The temperature, load and time of
solid bituminous are understood to be 24-26c, 100g and 5srespectively.

For semi-solid bituminous, the penetration is more than the hard ones. Therefore,
penetration test of bituminous materials is important and very wide, application to
classify the bituminous to specific grade. Although penetration testis classified as
empirical test, it is very easy and fast to be done.

Penetration value is a measure of hardness or consistency of bituminous material. It is

the vertical distance traversed or penetrated by the point of a standard needle in to the
bituminous material under specific conditions of load, time and temperature. This
distance is measured in one tenths of a millimeter. This test is used for evaluating
consistency of bitumen. It is not regarded as suitable for use in connection with the
testing of road tar because of the high surface tension exhibited by these materials.

3. INTRODUCTION

The penetration test is used to measure consistency of bituminous

materials expressed as the distance in tenths of millimeter that a standard
needle vertically penetrates a sample of the materials under known
conditions of loading, loading time and temperature.

4. OBJECTIVES PF EXPERIMENT

To measure the penetration value of asphalt cement and by penetration we can

determine the grade of asphalt, this is melted and cooled and kept at a room
temperature of 25C

7. METHODOLOGY

1. The penetration needle is clean with toluene and dried with a clean cloth.
2. Needle is inserting carefully in the penetrometer.
3. Sample container (100g) place directly on the submerged stand in the penetrometer. The
sample container is keep completely cover with water at the 25 0.5C temperature.
4. The pointer of penetrometer is set to zero.
5. The needle position is slowly lowering until its tip with the surface of the sample.
6. Needle holders are released for the specified period of time (5sec) and get the 1/10mm
reading. Ignore the result if the container moves.
7. Three determinations are makes at point of the surface of the sample not less than 10mm
from the side of the container and not less than 10mm apart.

8. RESULT AND ANALYSIS

Number of penetration Penetration

1 8.35 mm
2 8.31 mm
3 8.85 mm
Average 8.503

We will convert it to "grade" by multiply it by 10 then the answer in grade will be

85.03

9. DISCUSSION

1. There should be no movement of the container while needle penetrates into sample.

2. The sample should be free from any extraneous matter.

3. We have some errors because we took the reading on the temp. Of 26 C not on the
standard value (25 C).

4. The needle should be cleaned with benzene and dried before penetration.

5. We selected the temp. Of 25 C because its the avg. of surface temp.

10. CONCLUSION

The conclusion that we got from the experiment it's shown that the temperature
uniformity while running the experiment is important because the value should be
obtained from the third experiment is the same. And the experiment was based on the
values used for paving is worth30.25, while the other are certain error during
infiltration such as there should be no movement of the container while needle
penetrates into sample, the sample should be free from any extraneous matter and
lastly the needle should be cleaned with benzene and dried before penetration.
