Comprehension Lesson Plan
Objective: Students in this 2nd grade small group will show their comprehension skills
using a characteristics map after reading a story.
TEKS Standard:

(9) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Fiction. Students understand, make

inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of fiction and provide
evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to:

(B) describe main characters in works of fiction, including their traits,

motivations, and feelings.
Materials: The books include: Theres a Nightmare in My Closet by Mercer Mayer and
Stephanies Ponytail by: Robert Munsch, Character Characteristics Map (The Florida
Center for Reading Research, 2007, p.1).
Anticipatory Set: The teacher will go through a picture walk and read to students the
very short book, Theres a Nightmare in My Closet by Mercer Mayer.
Teaching
o Input: In todays class, we will practice our comprehension skills by using a
characteristics map.
o Teaching Modeling: The teacher will use an enlarged characteristics chart to
show students how to fill out one as well as show students her example based on
the book, Theres a Nightmare in My Closet by Mercer Mayer.
Guided Practice:
o Before reading the book, the teacher will go through a picture walk with a new
and different book called, Stephanies Ponytail by: Robert Munsch. As the teacher
goes through a picture walk, the students will make predictions about the
characters expressions and actions throughout the book.
o The teacher will read the book.
o Students will then choral read the book with the teacher.
Closure: Students will use the Character Characteristics map (The Florida Center for
Reading Research, 2007, p.1). Students will write about the main character from
Stephanies Ponytail by: Robert Munsch.
Independent Practice: Students will whisper read the book, Stephanies Ponytail by:
Robert Munsch.
Formative Assessment: (Questions made by the teacher)

3. What was Stephanies last ponytail in the book? (literal)
4. Where was it that Stephanie noticed that everyone was coping her?
