Comprehension Lesson Plan Objective: Students in this 2nd grade small group will show their comprehension skills using a characteristics map after reading a story. TEKS Standard:
(9) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Fiction. Students understand, make
inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to:
(B) describe main characters in works of fiction, including their traits,
motivations, and feelings. Materials: The books include: Theres a Nightmare in My Closet by Mercer Mayer and Stephanies Ponytail by: Robert Munsch, Character Characteristics Map (The Florida Center for Reading Research, 2007, p.1). Anticipatory Set: The teacher will go through a picture walk and read to students the very short book, Theres a Nightmare in My Closet by Mercer Mayer. Teaching o Input: In todays class, we will practice our comprehension skills by using a characteristics map. o Teaching Modeling: The teacher will use an enlarged characteristics chart to show students how to fill out one as well as show students her example based on the book, Theres a Nightmare in My Closet by Mercer Mayer. Guided Practice: o Before reading the book, the teacher will go through a picture walk with a new and different book called, Stephanies Ponytail by: Robert Munsch. As the teacher goes through a picture walk, the students will make predictions about the characters expressions and actions throughout the book. o The teacher will read the book. o Students will then choral read the book with the teacher. Closure: Students will use the Character Characteristics map (The Florida Center for Reading Research, 2007, p.1). Students will write about the main character from Stephanies Ponytail by: Robert Munsch. Independent Practice: Students will whisper read the book, Stephanies Ponytail by: Robert Munsch. Formative Assessment: (Questions made by the teacher) 1. Who does Stephanies hair? (literal) 2. Why do you think Stephanie likes ponytails? (evaluative) 3. What was Stephanies last ponytail in the book? (literal) 4. Where was it that Stephanie noticed that everyone was coping her? (inferential) 5. What was Stephanies third ponytail in the book?
