Why animals do become extinct?

Habitat Loss

Most of the animals are adapted to a specific habitat and cannot live anywhere
else.

Introducing Non-Native species

Many native species have become extinct because they have been killed, had
their food eaten or lost their habitat due to introduced species.

Hunting and Harvesting

Some animals, like rhinos, tigers and bears are hunted in the wild for their skins,
and other products. Most of these animals take a long time to reproduce and so
are very close to extinction.

List of extinct animals in the Philippines

Sirenia Sea Cow - Sirenians are slow and

passive mammals of tropical and sub-tropical waters.
Their large thick bodies betray their heritage
as relatives of elephants. There are only five living
species of sirenians, known collectively as "sea-
cows," including the dugong and the manatees.
 Cebu warty Pig - The Visayan warty pig is a
small, forest-dwelling pig. Its diet includes cultivated
vegetables and fallen fruits. It is usually found in
groups of 4 - 5 individuals, with groups of up to a
dozen individuals seen occasionally.

Philippine rhinoceros - Rhinoceroses are

universally recognized by their massive bodies,
stumpy legs and either one or two dermal horns. In
some species, the horns may be short or not obvious.

Stegodon - Stegodon is a genus of the extinct

subfamily Stegodontinae of the order Proboscidea. It
was assigned to the family Elephantidae, but has also
been placed in Stegodontidae.
 Tiger - Tigers are native to Asia, from India
to Russia, including China, the Malay Peninsula, and
even some Indonesian islands. Their habitat has gone
through a series of environmental problems.

Ways to prevent extinction of animals:

1. Learn about endangered species in your area.

2. Visit a national wildlife refuge, park or other open space
3. Make your home wildlife friendly
4. Native plants provide food and shelter for native wildlife
5. Herbicides and pesticides may keep yards looking nice but they are in fact hazardous
pollutants that affect wildlife at many levels.
6. Recycle and buy sustainable products
7. Protect wildlife habitat.
