WHAT ISMALTREATMENT?
M altreatment is described as any form of
child abuse and neglect for children under
the age of 18. The four main types of
maltreament is as follows: sexual abuse,
physical abuse, neglect, and emotional
abuse.

What Can You Do?


CDC offers several initiatives and resources for those
under maltreatment and for those who suspect a child
is being treated improperly. Visit CDC.gov for more
information regarding these resources.
In addition to this, promoting early- childhood home
visits, behavioral parent training, and enhanced
primary care can be preventive steps.

STATISTICS
- 683,000 children were victims of child abuse and neglect in 2015 (CDC,
2017).
- 24% of children under the age of one are victimized (CDC, 2017).
- Around 1,670 children died from abuse and neglect in 2015 (CDC, 2017).
- 807 children are in the care of Child Advocacy Center in South Dakota
(CAC, 2015).

Common Sense Parenting Program
The Department of Social Services in South Dakota
offers this program for parents of children under the age
of 18. Years of research has gone into this program and
covers various topics such as communication, temper,
self- control, behavior, discipline, school success,
meetings, and much more (DSS, 2015).
Learn how to create positive and lasting relationships
with your children!

N ot Sure If or H ow to Report?
RAIN N can help. RAIN N stands for rape, abuse, and
incest national network. This coalition gives a break
down of specific situations and if, when, and how to
report them, along with several definitions and
descriptions (RAIN N , 2009).
