I. Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson the student will be able to:

1. Solve an equation about evaluating algebraic expression.

2. Evaluate the people in their life if they can help you to improve as a person.
3. Make a board work activity about evaluating algebraic expression.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Evaluating Algebraic Expression

B. Reference: Experiential Mathematics 7, pp. 139-140 , Carmencita A. Ariola
C. Materials: Chalk

III. Procedure

Teachers Activity Students Activity

A. Daily Routine

Good Afternoon Class Good Afternoon Maam

Okay, let us pray. (one student will lead the prayer after all the
students bow their head)

Secretary, did you check the attendance? Yes Maam.

B. Review and Motivation

Review

Now let us review our topic yesterday. (Students listen attentively)

Polynomials can be classified in two different

ways: by the number of terms and by their
degree.

In number of terms, what has just one term? Monomial

What about two terms? Binomial

Three terms? Trinomial

Four terms or more? Polynomial

Where will you find the degree of polynomial? By looking at the term with the highest
exponent on its variable.

Motivation

Before we start for our discussion, I will give (Students listen attentively)
every group a scrambled picture puzzle. You
need to know what is the word. The group that
will finish first will get a prize. Okay? Lets start.
C. Lesson Proper

Our topic for today is about evaluating (Students listen attentively)

algebraic expression.
A variable in an algebraic expression may
take on different values. When a variable in
an algebraic expression is replaced by a
particular value, the expression is said to be
simplified or evaluated. The value of an
algebraic expression depends on the values
substituted into its variables.

Let us answer example no. 1

Evaluate 5x + 28 when x=3

First, substitute x with 3 in the equation

5x + 28 = 5(3) + 28

Now, simplify it.

5x + 28 = 15 + 28

5x + 28 is equivalent to? 43

Let us try on the board

Evaluate 22 - 3x2 when x = 4 22-3x2 = 22 - 3(4)2
= 22 - 48
= -26

Evaluate 9t3 when t = 2 9t3 = 9(2)3

= 9(8)
= 72

Evaluate 4y2 7xy + 4 when x = -2 ; y = 5 4y2 7xy + 4 = 4(5)2 7(-2)(5) + 4

= 100 - (-70) + 4
= 174

D. Activities

I will divide you into 6 groups. Each group The representatives will go in front of the
will have 1 representative who were going to class and will evaluate the following
answer on the board. equations.
But before we proceed to our activity,
heres the rule. 1.) 4y 115 when y = 7
1.) First to answer correctly will get the point. 4(7) 115 = - 87
2.) First to get 3 points will win.
2.) -3t2 + 18t 4 when t = 4
-3(4)2 + 18(4) 4 = 20

3.) 16r2 15r 90 when r = -3

16(-3)2 15(-3) 90 = 99

4.) 5x2y2 3xy + 64 when x = 3 and y = -5

5(3)2(-5)2 3(3)(-5) + 64 = 1234

5.) 7x2yz2 3xy2z +4x2y2z 7xyz

when x = -1 ; y = -2 ; z = -2
7(-1)2(-2)(-2)2 3(-1)(-2)2(-2)
+ 4(-1)2(-2)2(-2) 7(-1)(-2)(-2) = -84

IV. Generalization

How can we evaluate algebraic By replacing the variables with the given
expressions? values and simplifying the resulting
expression.
V. Evaluation

Evaluate the following algebraic expressions for the given values.

1.) 8z2 9 when z = 3

2.) 27v3 8v 8 when v = -4

3.) 13r (-36) when r = 12

4.) 312 + 78 x when x = 4

5.) -9m4 8m + 143 when m = -2

Answer:
1. 8(3)2 9 = 63
2. 27(-4)3 8(-4) 8 = -1704
3. 13(12) (-36) = 192
4. 312 + 78(4) = 624
5. -9(-2)4 8(-2) + 143 = 15

VI. Assignment

Evaluate the following algebraic expressions for the given values.

1.) 3n2m + 5n 100m + 28 when n = -2 ; m = 2

2.) -5y3 + (3/5)y 22/5 when y = -1

3.) -9u3v2 142uv2 when u = -2 ; v = 3

4.) 14st2 22ts2 88 when s = -3 ; t = 2

5.) 7z2 + 16z 226 when z = 5

Answer:
1. 3(-2)2(2) + 5(-2) 100(2) + 28 = -158
2. -5(-1)3 + (3/5)(-1) 22/5 = 0
3. -9(-2)3(3)2 142(-2)(3)2 = 3204
4. 14(-3)(2)2 22(2)(-3)2 88 = -124
5. 7(5)2 + 16(5) 226 = 29
