Since the HPF and LPF slopes introduce Phase Deviation / Phase Shift / Group Delay
the final phase response of a Speaker System may differ from one model to other.
The issue is more complex, since the natural / original phase response of transducer is
not flat, and the relative internal position of the transducers inside the cabinet in a lot
of cases is not identical.
The previous 2 factors will require a process to align the phase response at Crossover
Points.
Since the final application may differ there may be a lot of several approaches to
speaker Systems:
In order to minimize the phase differences its between Speaker Systems its necessary
to Equalize the Phase/Time differences.
All-Pass Filters have been used by Meyer Sound since the first generation of products
(the days of NOT Self Powered Systems).
The idea behind this is to allow the end user to achieve summation when combining
different model of Speaker Cabinets.
As we can see, ALL speaker models in ULTRA Series are Phase Compatible and then
after time align them they will ADD at all frequencies.
CONCERT SERIES
As we can see, MSL6 and MSL4 in CONCERT Series are Phase Compatible and then
after time align them they will ADD at all frequencies.
M Series
As we can see, M1D and M2D in M Series are Phase Compatible and then after time
align them they will ADD at all frequencies.
M SERIES
As we can see, Milo, Mica, Melodie in M Series are Phase Compatible and then after
time align them they will ADD at all frequencies.
CONCERT SERIES, ULTRA SERIES, M Series
As we can see, MSL6, MSL4, UPQ, UPA, UPJ, UPJr, UPM, MM4XP, M2D, M1D are
Phase Compatible and then after time align them they will ADD at all frequencies.
BUT, Life is not so easy
Since the Phase Response of Milo, Mica, Melodie is not identical to the previous ones
(MSL6, MSL4, UPQ, UPA, UPJ, UPJr, UPM, MM4XP, M2D, M1D), and the phase
response of CQ1 & CQ2 is different to those ones, and finally M3D is also different to
all the previous ones.
As we can see, since the phase response set apart from 120 from 50Hz to 125Hz, then
in this frequency range they will loss power summation.
Combined Speaker Responses (UPA 1P, Milo)
As we can see, since the phase response set apart from 120 from 50Hz to 500Hz, then
in this frequency range they will loss power summation.
Its time for Equalize the Phase Differences using ALL-PASS Filters
The next chart shows the values for ALL-Pass Filters in the Meyer Sound Speaker
models in order to make each one phase compatible with the Series Milo-Mica-
Melodie (since this one exhibit more group delay)
M Series: M3D
Frequency Q Order
ALL-PASS 1 80Hz 1.3 2nd
As we can see, Milo, Mica, Melodie, MSL6, MSL4, UPQ, UPA, UPJ, UPJr, UPM,
MM4XP, M2D, M1D, CQ & M3D are phase compatible (Phase differences smaller
than 120) and will produce SUMMATION at all frequency range
