Topic 1

Piece 1- Adagio for Strings (1936), Classical, Composed by: Samuel Barber
Elective- YR 10
Music Components- Dynamics & Expressive Techniques, Texture
Creativity/Composition- Students in groups 4 will be given 30min, notating on Finale notepad
a 15 bar melody a minor key. Students need to use crescendo and decrescendo through there
compositions.
Aural- Students are to listen to Adagio for strings, writing down 4 different expressive
techniques they hear, sharing answers creating a discussion with the whole class.
Musicology- Students will be provided a short score and will analyse each section writing down
which chords evoke expressive techniques. Answers to be discussed with person sitting next to
them.

Performance- Students Perform an 8 bar composition (score provided) using IPads, Keyboard
app (Piano Free). The 8 bar arrangement involves the whole class participation, allowing
students to discover what and textured layers sound like. Teacher is to divide class into three
group parts, conducting class.



Piece 2- Flight of the Bumblebee (1899-1900) Nikoalai Rimsky Karsakov
Elective- YR 10
Music Components- Pitch
Creativity/ Composition- Students will write a small 6 bar composition with an ascending Pitch
line of any major key.

Aural- Students will listen to Flight of the Bumblebee and two different versions provided,
comparing how the pitch voice changes between the different version.

Musicology- Students will analyse a chromatic scale provided, analysing 4 bars highlighted
writing how and why this creates frantic tempo.

Performance- Students play instrument of their specialty, playing a C Major scale from low to
high. The aim of the task is to replicate the difficulty of fast tempo as pitch is demonstrated
through voicings of the scale. Metronome involved as BPM will build on tempo.

Piece 3- Surprise (Symphony no.94), Franz Joseph Hayden, Australian composer


Elective- YR 9
Music Components- Structure, Expressive techniques
Creative/ Composition- Students are each given 20 min to compose a 6 bar piano motif
with a recurring pattern for 2-3 bars of their choice. G major key

Aural- students will listen to Surprise after which playing a quiz game using Kahoot
through IPad/computer, answering 12 questions provided about structure. Top players
gets a merits.
Musicology- Students work in pars, analysing 3 different songs, writing the order of parts.
Answers will be provided at the end of task and discussed.

Performance- Students play a small ensemble (score provided) using xylophones, teacher
will conduct changing themes, as students learn about ostinato patterns.



Piece 4- The Dubliners- Whiskey in the Jar, Cultural Irish, 1967
Elective- YR 9
Music Components- Tone Colour, Texture
Creative/composition- Students given 25min compose 8-10 bars an instrumental using
two cultural instruments of choice on finale Notepad.

Aural- Students will listen to the Dubliners version and Metallicas version of Whiskey in
the Jar, writing what differences of tone colour between the two versions present.

Musicology- The class will have an opportunity to discuss what textural elements are
presented through the Dubliners Song, and how the Irish culture use Monophonic, Similar
Motion and Imitation through the piece.

Performance- Teacher divides the class in half, one half sings a basic vocal line and other
plays on piano the same melody as vocals, learning about Unison. Switching roles after
one run through.

Piece 5- Sakura Cherry Blossoms, Japan Culture, Classical Koto


Elective- YR 10
Music Components- Duration
Creative/Composition- Students write in pairs a composition of 8-12 bars, picking one
instrument of 10 provided with two different parts of duration (e.g. Flute must have an -
ostinato pattern).
Aural- Listening (00:55-2:10) of Cherry Blossoms, analysing what features are presented
within this time bracket related to duration features.

Musicology- Students play a quiz divided into half the class answering questions about
duration features understood through Cherry Blossoms (questions and answers
provided). Winning team get Merits

Performance- Students play percussion instruments wood block, Tamborine, Hang, Bongo
drum etc. playing piece provided, this contains different elements of Duration which
helps familiarise there understanding with the concept.




Piece 6- Youre the Voice, John Farnham (POP), 1986
Mandatory- YR 8
Music Components- Pitch
Creative/ Composition- Students write a 4 bar Major chord progression using Muse
Score. Then writing a separate Melody of High pitch, notes values provided

Aural- Listening to Youre the Voice, students will write down three features they hear
relating to pitch answers to be shared with class.

Musicology- Using score provided, students circle sections of the music that demonstrate
high pitch, Major scale, harmony and Modulation

Performance- As a class students sing various tones provided from


Low pitch, high pitch, unison and melodic rise and fall ( score provide).

Piece 7- In the Air Tonight, Phil Collins (Classic Rock) 1981


Mandatory- YR8
Music Components- Tone Colour, Duration
Creative/Composition- Students use Garage band and create and electronic loop with a
small melody minimum of 30 seconds

Aural- Students listen to In the Air, writing down different types of instruments they
hear.

Musicology- Kahoot is used as a quiz game for students to answer questions about In the
Air questions answers provided 10 questions. Top 6 Win lollies

Performance- students clap an ostinato pattern provided with 3 different time signatures




Piece 8- Land Down Under, Men At Work (POP) 1980
Mandatory- YR 7
Music Components- Structure, Duration
Creative/Composition- Student will write a 4/4 AABA structure small composition using
only crochets.

Aural- Students Listen to Land Down Under having whole class discussion about song

Musicology- Students examine 4 bars basic score (provided), answering questions relative
to Duration and structure about the score in pairs.

Performance- Students play xylophones provided a score that has an AABA Form, this
helps students understand pop structure.

Piece 9- Ging Gang Goolie, African, Culture Music


Mandatory- YR7
Music Components- Dynamics
Creative/Composition- In groups of 4, students create a 30 second acapella using only 6
words.

Aural- Students listen to Soundtrack from 00:10-1:05, provided questions by teacher


about what expressive techniques are being heard.

Musicology- Class divided into 6 groups, where teams will be quizzed on dynamics,
provided small parts of sound tracks and answers for each. Winning group gets Merits

Performance- Students sing Ging Gang Goolie in Unison using expressive techniques
such as Piano, Forte and Crescendo. Sound track provided.
