Digital Assignment - I (Fall Semester 2017-18)

Course: Digital Communication System

Course Code: ECE 4001
Branch: B.Tech- ECE.
SLOT: A1

1) The input signal to the delta modulator is:

x(t ) 250t u(t ) u(t 1) (500 250t ) u(t 1) u(t 2)
If the sampling rate is 25k samples per second then determine the optimum value of
step size to eliminate slope overload and granular noise distortions.

2) A compact disc (CD) records audio signals digitally using PCM. Assume the audio
signal is band limited to be 3 kHz and has maximum signal amplitude 1 V. The
sampling rate is 50% higher than the Nyquist rate. If the speech signal is quantized
into 4096 levels, then determine the quantization step, the signal-to-quantization noise
ratio and the bit rate required to encode the given audio signal.

3) Discuss about one bit version of DPCM system with suitable diagrams and equations.
Also find the Transmitter and Receiver output of the given system for the following
signal by considering = 1, x(k)= {0.3, 1.5, 0.7, 1, 2.3, 3.7, 2.8, 3.4, 2.8, 0}.

4) Compare the noise performances of coherent BPSK and QPSK by using the average
probability of symbol error Pe as the basis of comparison. Consider Eb/No = 5, 10.

5) Draw the block diagram of a baseband binary data transmission system and prove the
presence of intersymbol interference at the receiver due to imperfections in the overall
frequency response of the system.

6) Consider the following binary sequences

i). An alternating sequence of 1s and 0s in a 10 bit sequence

(ii). A sequence of five 1s followed by a single 0 and then a sequence of four

1s Sketch the waveform for each of these sequences using the following line
coding schemes: Pseudo-ternary Signaling and Manchester format.

7) In Manchester code, binary symbol 1 is represented by the doublet pulse s(t) shown below
and binary symbol 0 is represented by the negative of this pulse. Derive the probability of
error of this signal over AWGN channel.
8) An analog signal whose voltage is varying between 0V to 2V and it is given as input
to PCM with midriser type quantizer of =0.5. Let x[k] = {0.2, 0.7, 1.3, 1.7} be the
sample values of the given analog signal.
a. Find the Quantized signal xq[k].

b. Design an encoder for the above system and encode the xq[k].

c. Draw NRZ Unipolar and Polar signaling format for the encoded signal.
