Emerging Technologies: SMART Boards
As generations evolved, the teacher’s strategy adapts by integrating technology in the
classroom based upon the student needs. About 20 years ago the SMART white board was
created. It allows teachers to move around the classroom, interact, and promote students
involvement. ‘These interactive electronic white boards are taking over schools, universities, and
even businesses.
The SMART board is a touch sensitive product that is programmable to project any file
so that the students can add their input to it. According to Mazzullo, a computer desktop is
projected onto the surface often the board allowing users to use their fingers or smart pens to
access and control allowing functions without having to go back every time to their computer. It
enables users to move objects, words, text, graphs, maps, templates that are displayed on the
board. Also, the SMART board has character recognition software that allows users to write
notes, draw diagrams, highlight information, and circle points on the screen. Through the
notebook software, teachers are able to share lesson plans with other teachers using a flash drive
(Smart board, 2008).
Through the use of universally understood visuals, the SMART board captures student’s
attention by engaging and immersing them into any lesson that has been planned. Students are
not only listening to the monotony of a voice; they are interacting and increasing their
involvement in the classroom. These students are adding their input into the lessons, giving them
a sense of importance. When every student is able to participate, a feeling of competence among
their classmates pushes them to do their best to become someone better overtime, It is said thatGarcia 2
the brain interprets the visual prospects more effectively then the audio ones. By implementing
technology such as the SMART boards in classrooms, we are assuring that our students are
prepared to compete in a technology global market.
There is a need to wisely incorporate technology into education, Technology is a tool
that has drastically changed teaching and learning. The idea that soon most classrooms won't use
a whiteboard is indisputable. As new generations emerge, the distractions increase. As educators
wwe have to evolve with them by using technology that will make learning a marvelous
experience.Garcia 3

This assignment made me realize how much technology can help classrooms
We live in an era where technology is consuming our time. Our teaching methods have
to evolve by implementing certain equipment on the classroom to help the student stay
focus and more engaged. Out of all the products that are out there | chose the SMART
board. It promotes the student involvement in the classroom. Since it offers lesson
already prepared, this product engages student through visuals that captures the
student's attention.
‘One of the weaknesses | found with this activity was that after all the research
we did we weren't able to practice with a real tangible product. The maybe next time
there will be samples that will allow us to practice and have a better idea of how it is in
real life. | would let my students do research about some type of technology that can be
used in our classroom. Students spend hours on the computer; a lot of times they use
websites that can be very beneficial to the class subject.
